Is it possible to auto stop recording for playing a real drum kit or if your timimg is not perfect? Also as pertaining to mr.wobbles maybe there are some defective units in circulation...I am afraid to purchase one...what do you think?
@thepoofster2251

There def is some defective units but I haven't had trouble with mine. You can auto stop recording , you just set the length of the loop first. If you are recording real instruments then get the MK2. The analog/digital converter is 32 bit instead of 16 so you get a much more "true" recording from the 505

Thank you so much for your reply. I have researched the manual, watched about 30 videos and wrote several posts. You are the only one to reply about setting loop length. Yes, I will be using a roomfull of real instruments, but as a 57 year old comedian and a fan of house/techno I am looking forward to all the looper has to offer creating some funny-ass quality songs and videos. I’ve found a 3rd workaround for this issue: If you set the rhythm beat to 2/4, Track 1 length to ‘1’ and any other track to Free you won’t have to count an extra beat nor load up a blank loop and still get the spoken ‘one’ on the actual downbeat. Obviously you shouldn’t use the rhythm, cause the tempo will be north of 200 haha..

Make sure you have the most recent patch, the 505 has had a lot of stability patches and it may fix. Next time it happens feel for heat, it may be a cooling issue. Besides that, an expert at boss would have to help. It's not gonna sound nice but the original 505 was kinda known for being delicate. Hey Poofy, subed and thumbed up for You and Your piece of gold nugget advices. I know it is a bit off- topic, but I have a weird problem with my MK2: I rarely use mic but mostly keyboard (korg kronos) as input. Some loops I record have a weird glitchy effect like a tremolo, when played back over my stereo. The effect is not there (or just more subtle), when I listen to the same loop over headphones. It may have to do with post recording tempo change of the loop, but I am not sure of this. Also, when I change the tempo of a prerecorded loop, there is an (aliasing?) effect with subtle kind if cracking noises in the recorded loop. Have You or anybody had these kind of problems, or is my machine just out if order?

Can you replicate the problem? If you can, make a video and send it to boss. Literally 80 percent of the difficulty in patches is replicating the issue, if you can, trust me, boss wants to know. Also, there is a looper by the name of brez, he has been working with boss on some specific issues, he has examples of some bugs and is working with boss to address them. Sometimes I think a person prefers to have a problem, so that they have the excuse not to solve it. I think the main issue was addressed pretty clearly in both videos posted. Saying it is "broken" is kind of inaccurate. Its more a case of (as you stated in your video) the machine not working the way he wants it to. The complaints about "quantization" are totally absurd to me. Its literally the reason loops dont slip off time in the RC505 (both models, not just the mk2). No one is that fucking accurate every single time they make loops and overdubs. Quantization is literally necessary for most of the effects to work properly, as well as creating clean loops that do not slip off the beat. I dont care how accurate you think you are, if the loops were not synced to the tempo, as well as each other, your loops would slip over time. Period. Not wanting a click track in your ear is not the same as not wanting your beats to be quantized. Everyone hates playing and recording to a fucking metronome, but Id bet everyone hates beats slipping off time even more. To reiterate one more time... Quantization is literally necessary to enable the style of looping possible with the RC505 (and most looping units and software since the concept was created from a delay pedal something like 50+ years ago.) As far as recording into the unit itself, if the unit is genuinely defective when recording audio, then there are ways to go about solving that issue as well... This whole topic has had me stewing since those videos were posted. But, I suppose we will see what comes of that whole thing wont we?
@RyanMarchand

I think you are confusing quantization with loop sync. Quantize stretches recorded audio to match a target. Sync determines a punch in and out point and what division of those two points you want to use to loop with
@jWir366
@jWir366 2 жыл бұрын
@@RyanMarchand "Loop sync" is a function specific to the RC505. "Quantization" is function universal to pretty much anything that can record and sequence audio...It does not "stretch" audio. It aligns audio with a specific division of time. Quantization is what determines the division of segments of audio over a specific time and tempo, not "loop sync". Loop Sync literally does as its name implies. It syncs one loop to another in the RC505s loopers (based on whatever the selected measure of the loop segment is). I am definitely not confused on the difference between the two functions.... Without "quantization", the concept of syncing something like an LFO or delay time to a tempo would be incredibly difficult or even impossible. You can turn "loop sync" off in the RC505, you cannot however turn off the "quantize" function (only change HOW it quantizes) because that is (again) literally what makes what the machine does possible. The closest thing you could do is turn off "Tempo Sync" in the settings but again that would make things unnecessarily difficult, and who the hell wants that?! TLDR who cares.
@RyanMarchand
@RyanMarchand 2 жыл бұрын
@@jWir366 no point arguing. Can you hear the audio being stretched to match what you call quantization? (Set segment length whether to tempo or loop length) quantization in most audio environments involves taking a piece of audio and attempting to make it fit into a different length by stretching it and often also scans for hard transients to align to a grid. (Audio production often kick and snare)
@RyanMarchand
@RyanMarchand 2 жыл бұрын
@@jWir366 all it takes is a moment to Google it or do a KZfaq search. You're assessment and likely use of the feature is wrong. Maybe take it as a compliment the cleaner/better of a player you are the less the effect is heard. This guy says it in the first 60 seconds. It grabs your sloppy audio and places it on the "grid" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rbZngLehrKuzmZ8.html
@jWir366
@jWir366 2 жыл бұрын
@@RyanMarchand And this guy is not using an RC505 at all. So this is irrelevant to comparing and differentiating between "quantization" and "loop sync". Aligning audio to a grid and stretching it are not the same thing (as you implied before). Quantization DOES NOT stretch audio. It literally only aligns it to a selected grid. Your implication that quantizing stretches audio is simply not true. I dont care how "clean" you think you are. Without your loops synced to a tempo, they will fucking slip over time. .05ms of delay will cause it to slip in less than 2 minutes of looping. Your example video literally says nothing about stretching audio or effecting its playback whatsoever. "Aligns it to a grid" is not that. It is clear that YOUR understanding of these functions is flawed. So think what you like, I know the difference.

You need headphones first of all, that's going to be your personal monitoring. You will be able route your main output and rhythm track to them so if you are just looping for yourself, that's all you need. The usb will send the signal to your lappy but you will need some sort of audio program to receive to signal and play it through the speakers. Any DAW (digital audio workspace/station) will have routing options built in that will serve your purpose. You don't need an audio interface, but they are very nice to have and you are better off with one in general. If you plan on looping anywhere outside of your home you will most likely have a sound system provided by the venue, you just plug in and go. If you are busking or something, you will need some form of amplifier. For guitar, you can plug straight in to the input jack (left for mono), there is an amp/cab simulator in the FX section that is useful for tone. I personally jam all the time plugged directly into the mk2 and out through headphones. But of reverb helps too! Hope this helps, if you have any more questions, ask away

Hi, I'll update you once again and I hope to be of help to everyone after months of testing. The latest upgrade has finally come out and can be downloaded from the Roland boss page. You have to download it, save it in the loop station and then do a factory reset. Unfortunately I can then reset all the parameters a bit, which is better if you like them, but it seems very stable and now all the errors seem to have disappeared. Especially since I use it by always launching the times on all the tracks. Holding down stop Play so as to give the same Clock. to all of them and by putting it under intense strain I have seen that for now it is holding up very well theoretically as it should have been in the beginning. I watched this then found the video you were replying to. Nice work. Looks like it's more a case of learning something new and tweaking an approach than a bug. I'm still on the fence between this and the MK1. I want something that's reliable and it sounds like there's a lot of bugs in the MK2, but likewise I'm trying to work out what's a bug and what's just different to what people expect or you can find a work around for, like you demonstrated in this video. I'm pretty tactile and I like things simple, I don't mind menu diving to set things up but I don't want to be doing that when I'm performing. You mentioned in a comment somewhere that the MK1 was more intuitive and the MK2 is more for production. What do you mean exactly? I like to improvise a lot and change my loops up a lot on the fly, throwing half speed or reverse onto things and letting the songs change and evolve. Is that something I can do with both of these or is one better for it than another?

Thanks for the view! About the bugs, there was a new firmware update released for the MK2 this month so some bugs have been addressed. If I had to compare the two, being the 505 and Mk2, I would say that they are both loopers at heart but they excell at different things. The original 505 is very solid, simple, easy to learn but it is much more limited than the mk2. There are minimal menus so it's easy to navigate, a good selection of effects but not too many so you can get to them fast and it has a fairly simple signal path to trace when troubleshooting. The Mk2 on the other hand, is more complex, has more menus, more input/output (I/O), more effects, and a much more complicated signal path. There are all the effects present on the original and a lot more, this means you have to pre plan more. You can access banks of effects on input and track effects and there is a step sequencer so once again, pre done routines will shine. Menus are deep but if you set up short cuts or want to dive into Midi it's not too bad. Basically the 505 feels more like a looper and the Mk2 feels like a music production machine If you have any other questions feel free to ask away! Esh!

I must admit this seems functionality seems stupid to me. For example, your first loop you’re saying the machine is saying that is one bar of 4. So you can only start new loops on the one? Why can’t you start another loop on the down beat of the 2, 3 or 4? That would still be synced tempo wise (if that is required for FX) but would allow for far more versatility

When the unit starts playback, it sets a tempo and count. You can see the count on the tempo button itself, it blinks red for the 1 and green for the others. This gives you a definitive start point for sequences and the rhythm track. For starting loops on other beats it can be done. When I want to do it, I just load in a blank loop and punch in whenever is needed. There may also be other options available but this is found is very reliable and quick. Thanks for the view! Esh!

Depends on what you are doing. If you are using analog instruments or you like music production ish looping then upgrade to the MK2. The 32 bit A/D sounds a lot better in the low end and you can get wayyyy more complex signal paths otg. If you already have routines on the 505, or you find you don't really use a lot of effects or complicated things, then stick to the 505. The Mk2 is much more complex so if you don't use much of the fancy things that the 505 has, you prob won't use the even more complicated options in the new model. When the 505 came out there were issues as well and it took many patches to get it to where it is today. In 5 years the Mk2 will prob be in the same situation. If you have production know how, as in you are familiar with long effect chains, mixing, automation, sequencers ect... The Mk2 may be more to your style. The producer side of me was very mad when I couldn't filter and compress a guitar2bass effect on the 505, but on the Mk2, easy as pie. Also, the Mk2 has 32 bit analog to digital and opposed to the 505s 16 bit a/d. I'm a guitarist so this was a deal breaker for me. The 16 bit digital conversion can suck the tone out of some instruments. Thanks again for the view and comment btw! Any other questions are more than welcome!

Yes, this is because it's waiting for the down beat. While the machine is playing, the tempo button will flash. The red flash is the 1 of the beat so start from there. If it's really a problem, then just preselect a loop size and fill an empty loop. That way, you can 'punch in' and it won't be quantized

Dear Poofster, thanks for this nice video. Would you or anybody else kindly try the following settings? Loop > Rec > Rec Action 'Rec->Dub' Loop > Rec > Quantize 'Off' Track 1 to 5 Measure 'Free' Loop Sync 'Off' This way the RC505MKII should hopefully behave like the RC505MKI did with overdubbing and free looping without syncing Track to each other. Many thanks in advance!

This is def a way you could loop, and may address the original issue, although I must say I use quant. That's one of the beautiful things about the machine, with complexity comes options and different modes of use. Thanks for the view! Esh!

These workarounds that you have found work.... BUT I would not say they are elegant. As far as music composition goes the way you have to loop like this is disjointed and jarring and not smooth. Complex patterns and changes become more complex and extra programming and buttons are needed to achieve what before was simple and elegant. IF there are good applications for this style of looping thats awesome! Great! but to me its niche and should probably be a setting not a locked-in default. My two cents

no one has an issue with being solutions-orientated, but if a sequel product has objective drawbacks compared to its predecessor, isn't it 100% valid to acknowledge that and criticise that fact?
@thepoofster2251
@thepoofster2251 2 жыл бұрын
I completely disagree. Once you learn how everything works on the machine, it is superior in essentially every way. The only thing I could see someone arguing is that it has some bugs and it's not as simple. Since this was recorded a patch has dropped which fixed most problems, and the simplicity is addressed by learning. Just curious if you own either the 505 or Mk 2, I would love to hear any problems you have had with either, I like diagnosing hahaha. Thanks for the view also!

you don't fix mr wobbles problem because it is not the same problem. in your video it doesn't record "one" because the record button is still blinking whereas in his video the button doesn't blink and still isn't recording. therefore it must be another problem.

@@eymario I don't blame you for not finding it, the setting are not easy to find. I can't exactly remember the setting, so you will have to play around to find it. My first day with the mk2, I spent setting it up and haven't looked at them since. Basically, what's happening with my set up, the tempo gets set by the length of the first loop and all loops after are "snapped" on grid. If you hit record too early or late, it will snap your input to the nearest down or up beat, depending on how you count. The count actually starts counting at the first moment of play back so if the loop is started to early, which was the case with wobbles, it will wait a half beat for the record

They cannot "fix" it because it's how the unit is supposed to operate. Without this new timecoding, all the step sequencing would we wonky, and that's one of the main features that people love about this unit. If you own a MK1 then keep it, because they are not made new anymore. Also, the MK 2 has sold quite well

@@thepoofster2251 Interesting.. So you believe this new engine was created to accomodate for the step-sequencing feature? That would at least make some sense of this. I can adapt and change but like I said before its not very elegant and dont care for step-sequence... which again I would say is sort of a niche. To bully the rest of the unit which is for looping to have to adapt for that feature comes across and pretty alienating.
