You are spot on! So Hyang is a once in a lifetime voice, and my very fav singer. Her backstory is very compelling, too, learning to sing listening to Mariah Carey's 'Music Box' album, and singing it over and over as a teenager never thinking she'd ever really be a singer. She never sang publicly until she was 19. She was diagnosed with cancer in her early twenties (maybe even at 20) and because of it can not have children. She has been married to the same man, whose family has a band and started So Hyang's musical undertakings. She has had many, many bouts with pneumonia and it seems like she should not be able to sing at tall. She is very devout, and though I am not religious, I know someone who is full of spirit and that is this woman from South Korea. I feel this is the reason she still sings at 45, like no one has ever sung at that age in the history of music! She sings for the joy and comfort of others, not to be rich and famous. She has turned down recording contracts (one from David Foster). She is also an author of children's books, speaks several different languages, and does her own arrangements with her team. She is not about herself at all. She has all the qualities of a diva on stage, but none of those petty things that many have off stage. She is a vocal monster, who can sing anything. 'I Have Nothing' from the DMC Festival (her in a dark blue dress), 'Misty' (for something soothing and without her amazing power but with amazing control -- because that is what the song calls for) from the Begin Again Concerts (Covid times). Her own song 'Higher', the acoustic version is new and remarkable, showing off at 45 what an amazing artist she still is. Thanks for the great reaction. I subscribed!

Great reaction to the PHENOMENAL So Hyang. You have just witnessed a fraction of the flexibility in her voice. Her vocal range is RIDICULOUS, and her breath control is INSANE. This event was in 2015, when So Hyang was 37 years old. She is now 45 years old ( she'll be 46 in a few months). Not only is she aging in reverse, her vocals are better than ever before, if that's even possible. At the beginning of her career in 1996, some folks dubbed her the Korean Mariah Carey. You have just made one of the best investments in time.

Mrs. Hello, I'm a new sub. Juke box Dave is never wrong. He just opened the door for you into the enchanting World of Sohyang. First, just a word about her unusual name; Kim is her last name (Family Surname). Koreans always put the Surname first. Her given name is So Hyang. Her stage name is Sohyang - pronounced 'so yong'. You are now among us, those who are fortunate to have found her. Her background is in Gospel music and she learned to speak American English watching the Disney Channel as a child. She can sing any genre of music ever written. She does her own musical and stage arrangements. She is an author and lectures on music and voice at University. She is a cancer survivor at 20 and has devoted her magnificent voice to lifting people's spirits. There is still much more to know about her. Welcome. Cheers.

@MrsRealistic: The version she sings is a very, very different arrangement because she was in a competition with other popular Korean singers who were covering songs (originals or covers) done by Michael Bolton, who is a guess in the audience. She covers a wide range of styles to display her vocal prowess, as she had hoped it will get her the recognition by Western media. She won that episode, and the show won the Banff Award. Sadly, she was plagued by pneumonia and bad health for years, and had to withdraw from performing after a few months; she even contemplated ending her singing career.

Her Character excellent and she writes fiction Novels and faith based Books, Paints a little , Plays Guitar, Teaches Voice and Performance part-time at her home city university! Thank you for your reaction! Strongly recommend Sohyang’s 'Arirang Alone.' As I understand, it’s her version of a traditional Korean folksong that’s almost akin to a national anthem in South Korea, possibly intended as metaphor for hopes of north and south reunification, but I really don’t know for certain. But in any case, it is a beautiful and moving song, masterfully arranged and performed, sung by arguably one of the greatest singers anywhere, with lyrics that stir the heart regardless of nationality. Amazing song from an amazing talent.

We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek! Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qsuPf5ygy865pGw.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere! She just turned 45 on April 5, 2023, though in Korean culture she would be 46 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone,” their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527 While being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on KZfaq. Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on KZfaq and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing," her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places Sohyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas. Here is the interview where Sohyang related the events: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e9eVeMJi07aRe58.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.) Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster, Whitney's former manager and the rest watched on KZfaq: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ipqFrKx-0MrdZIE.html She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203 She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 16:25 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. Sohyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNJdnbtq0KjXdac.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.) So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no interactive social media presence whatsoever. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! And whether Sohyang likes it or not, fame has found her, run her over and then backed up and run over her again! On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that Sohyang turned down _yet another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music US. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995 “Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said. “I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.” “And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via KZfaq, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.” Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts. In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings. • First is a type of Korean traditional music. • Second is to burn incense on a burner. • Third is to go toward. But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Her grandmother named her. Please analyze her performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water”: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZyZe8tl3qjcc6M.html Also, please react to her version of “The Power of Love”: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gth-nrmD17Gbj30.html Plus this beautiful duet with her friend Lee Hi where they do Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You”: vimeo.com/439148918 And this version of her singing “Oh Holy Night”: vimeo.com/322716334 Here she performs “Lean On Me” before Michael Bolton, who called her a vocal “virtuoso” after her performance: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdyjmqad0cmygHk.html Wait until you see her duet of David Foster's “The Prayer” with Jeong Ui Geu: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNqVYNRk0NvSoGw.html Her performance of "Fate" in Korean requires no translation: vimeo.com/198161448 And finally “Will You Be There”: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pKiUhtOW3bvcmZ8.html Here’s an English language interview with her that I’m sure you will enjoy: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hJilktOe1L3cmmw.html Her English is perfect when she sings and almost perfect when she is doing interviews. OK, I’ll stop gushing now. Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Here it is: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jNSAdM6j3tjdl4U.html I know, bananas isn’t it? Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean stage production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" 'about one hundred times' when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an outgoing and bubbly personality. She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently! Though she is maybe 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else. As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉

I'm now 65 and I listen to her every day. I never even liked the diva genre, but Sohyang transcends musical boundaries. She can sing virtually anything! And she does all the arrangements too! @@ToddSauve You're right...I never really liked the "diva" music...I only liked Mariah Carey when she first came out, before her ego got too big. I liked some of Whitney's music back in the 80's when I was about 11...and Celine's... but it was the same thing, the overacting stage personas were off-putting. I didn't listen to them that much. Sohyang doesn't give off that vibe... and the fact that she sings songs that aren't part of the diva genre really makes her special and unique!

@@MrsRealistic I grew up in the 1960s and 70s listening to blues based rock and roll, and the great electric guitarists in particular. So the divas left me indifferent at best. I liked Karen Carpenter and Linda Ronstadt but I never bought their albums. I bought the Eagles, CCR, the Doobie Brothers, Boston, etc. A typical 1970s teenaged male. When I heard Sohyang for the first time I wept. No other singer has ever made me cry, and I'm not really an emotional guy, though as I have gotten older I have found it to effect me a lot more than it used to. Mariah Carey drove me up the wall with all her endless runs in everything she sang. It was like a one trick pony. Whitney certainly could sing but she partied like an animal with her husband Bobby Brown and that is what killed her at 48. David Foster said shortly after she died that her voice was shot. And he would know. Foster also calls Sohyang one of the top divas he's ever worked with, and she had a lot of bouts of pneumonia at the time he did concerts with her. So to be able to sing like she does while sick with pneumonia seems like a modern miracle to me. 😇

Thank God for the Internet because people outside American and European Union countries can show their talent to the whole world. This lady or Dimash are such examples. They are above anything we know. Why? Because we live in a small bubble of knowledge. We don't care or even artificially hate countries with a huge cultural potential. Who would have thought that a young guy from Kazakhstan has a voice from God? There are thousands of singers from ex-USSR republics, or South East Asia who are much better than American singers pushed by aggressive marketing. Thank you for showing your emotions.

I have to say that I loathe most main stream music nowadays. That's why I'm so excited when I discover these artists and find out they also shun record labels! Artists need freedom to choose what when and how the world hears their music!

I wouldn't completely agree with Steve, but I will say it was awesome to hear a wonderful voice like Sohyang's. I've also heard some great metal and power rock from other Asian artists like Love Bites, Nephelum, Band Maid, and so many more. The common thread among all of these artists is the level of musicianship and talent among them. Thanks for exposing me to this singer. I appreciate the variety of artists you react to.

김소향 (Kim, So-hyang) is a South Korean singer who uses 소향 (Sohyang) as her stage name. She's up there with Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Céline Dion, according to David Foster, who worked with all of them, plus other big names in the music industry, such as Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, and Michael Jackson. In fact, many vocal coaches and critics call her the Queen, and Dimash the King. Here are several links to excellent performances by Sohyang. Many are from competitions where she pulls out all the stops and goes into vocal beast mode. The last 5 are more restrained. You can alternate between the styles, just to experience the contrasts and see her range of abilities. All are live, except for a music video of "Never Enough" (since we can never get enough of Sohyang). DMC Festival: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ipqFrKx-0MrdZIE.html "I Have Nothing" [Whitney Houston] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eaykhbiEtd7Hkac.html (camera only on Sohyang) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pJ1hmKyIt9OppI0.html "꿈 (Dream)" [소향 (Sohyang)] {Korean} Immortal Songs 2: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZyZe8tl3qjcc6M.html "Bridge Over Troubled Water" [Simon & Garfunkel] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sKypocd8nryzc58.html "홀로 아리랑 (Arirang Alone)" [traditional Korean folksong, lyrics adapted for reunification of North & South Koreas] {Korean} kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdyjmqad0cmygHk.html "Lean On Me" [Bill Withers, Jr.; Michael Bolton guest] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qsuPf5ygy865pGw.html "You Raise Me Up" [Secret Garden; Shane Filan (Westlife) guest] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fpuVarCB18ubmY0.html "여러분 (Everyone)" [윤복희 (Yoon, Bok-hee)] {Korean, English} I Am A Singer 2: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j92XeZZ43tLZXWQ.html "O Holy Night" [Adolphe Charles Adam] King of Masked Singers: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8WcgqSY2c-biIU.html "모나리자 (Mona Lisa)" [조용필 (Cho, Yong-pil)] {Korean, English} kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZtdyhrOBzpmpg4E.html "Home (집)" [박효신 (Park, Hyo-shin)] {Korean, English} Begin Again Korea: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ormqlZmSlbbPgYk.html "Flashlight" with Lee Suhyun [Jessie J] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lc-mqdN8mLuxnKs.html "Misty" [Ella Fitzgerald] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/erVoZ5h21ruXlXk.html "I Will Always Love You" [Dolly Parton] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oZuHpKp6tdDVpJc.html "Never Enough" [Loren Allred] Open Concert: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rMCpfMegt7ivdqM.html "The Power of Love" [Jennifer Rush] BTW, Whitney's former manager saw the DMC Festival video of Sohyang singing "I Have Nothing", and contacted Oprah Winfrey, who in turn, contacted David Foster. They were all amazed. He invited her to sing on his tour in Asia. She did 8 shows in 4 days in Tokyo. Foster co-wrote that song. He arranged and produced it for Whitney for her album, and her performance in "The Bodyguard". Foster has won 16 Grammy Awards, including 3 for Producer of the Year, and has been nominated a total of 47 times.

When she just out of nowhere slides steadily into those high mix belts it feels like someone turns a volume knob. Simple as that. It's so insane. Either that or a floodgate opens and millions of tons of water are pouring out of a dam. That's what it feels like.

She is NOT a Celine Dion, she is NOT a Whitney Houston, she is NOT a Mariah Carey, they could only dream of being as spectacular as the utterly brilliant SOHYANG, everything she performs is arranged by herself, these Asian ARTISTS have been ignored for so long it's an embarrassment and to compare them with any of western so called artists is insulting to say the least, they have the exposure without much talent whereas Asian ARTISTS have talent in extremes without the exposure 🇬🇧🔥👌❤️.

I wasn't saying that she was the same as them...I'm simply saying we hear voices like this very rarely. And thanks to the internet, voices who were never heard before, are now able to be. The US has always dominated and monopolized on artists because it's about money for record producers. But look at how popular K-pop has become...when we in the west, never heard anything just 20 years ago. I don't know how it's insulting, when people like Whitney Houston had one of the most beautiful voices in the world. It's not a competition.

I'm Korean, and her statement is not insulting at all. Not the least. To me, it is a compliment when people compare SoHyang to the said artists. They're all once in a lifetime singers. They are all great! I know that SoHyang turned down many record labels (Sony music being one), so she is not a star known worldwide, and she is what I would call a hidden gem. Korea's gem 😊.

@tkd3963 she's a smart woman to turn them down... record labels control artists and make millions from them. She's probably more successful as an independent artist! And yes, she IS a hidden gem... but I think only to us in the west, it seems! Thankfully, because of KZfaq, everyone gets to hear her amazing talent! Thank you for your comment! 😊
