Sohyang's singing is shockingly beautiful. If a person has never heard her sing before it is truly a stop and listen moment, and she easily outperforms Whitney Houston. As Sohyang says, "You must be born with a good voice, but then work very hard to improve it." She almost eats, sleeps and breathes music. Here is what David Foster, who wrote the song and produced it for Whitney, had to say about Sohyang in an interview with South Korean media site _Naver_ on December 10, 2018, only a week after doing eight concerts with her at Tokyo's Blue Note Club. “I wanted to meet her very much, and I am delighted to have collaborated in putting together a concert. Here is how I got to know about Sohyang. Oprah Winfrey introduced me to 'a stunningly amazing singer whose video is a must watch.' I fell in love at once with Sohyang's first video I watched on KZfaq, 'I Have Nothing.' It was _thrilling,_ and I searched to listen to most of her other songs as well. I have wanted to meet her for a long time. She is one of the top divas I've come across." David Foster didn't hold back praise. "Her voice is very beautiful and overwhelming, and I found her every performance to be emotionally moving and amazing. Moving forward, I want to collaborate again!" It was actually Whitney Houston's former manager, almost certainly her sister in law Pat Houston, who found this performance on KZfaq and showed it to Oprah Winfrey. 🤷‍♂👌💘 Sohyang was named by her grandmother, whom she believes God inspired with the name even though neither her parents nor grandmother were Christians. Her name means "enjoy the light" as people have correctly informed me. Sohyang's favourite movie star is Brad Pitt. Like "duh," eh? What woman doesn't love Brad Pitt? Ha, ha! 😎 Sohyang is a 100% self-taught singer except for five sessions with Seth Riggs, which she didn't talk about in the interview I learned this from, so I think she had her Seth Riggs lessons after 2009 when this interview was recorded. She said she spent time with one of the producers of Boyz II Men while on vacation in California and learned either vocal technique or audio recording technique or both because he had a home recording studio. When she watches movies she doesn't take her hubby along because she wants to concentrate on the film without anyone interrupting or talking to her. Sorry hubby, but you can be so distracting and annoying at the movies! 😝 Sohyang likes action movies! She carries her Bible with her most places. It is an English New International Version and she tries to read five chapters a day, because it helps her stay fresh on her English. Oh yes, Sohyang wanted to be involved in musicals on stage but was offered the role of Carmen, which she turned down because Carmen was a prostitute. It sounded like she was offered prostitute roles repeatedly, so she more or less gave up on anything operatic. Though, of course, she did appear in "The Sound of Music." She is just one of those naturally wholesome women, and I think that is one of the reasons we like her. 😇❤ Sohyang is also analytic to the nth degree! She will listen to a song she likes over and over until she is satisfied she knows it inside out. The bass line, the drums, the vocals. She keeps going until she has almost worn out the recording. Well, she didn't say that last part but it is pretty obvious that she knows her music and when she decides to cover a song, she is going to cover it like it has never been covered before! And don't we all know it!?!! 🎸👍💘🎸

Mrs., people may not appreciate my Americanized pronunciation of her name, but 'so yong' is acceptable to most. Thanks for doing another of her brilliant stage performances. I will, annoyingly to some fans, repeat some of my thoughts from past reaction videos. Watching Sohyang is a form of beautiful agony. She captures and utterly enchants you until she lets you go. As amazing as is her voice, she must be watched. If you take your eyes away or begin to speak, you WILL miss something special. This performance is my personal favorite. She takes on an adorable stage presence for this Classic song - when she tugged up that slinky blue gown and slid across the stage like a Blues Singer in a 1940s movie, it was utterly charming. In this particular performance, she is at times; glamorous, beautiful, cute, playful, intense, dramatic, friendly, happy, serious, connected, and energetic. All of that, while in absolute control over her voice, the musical arrangement, the musicians, the stage, and the audience. Comparisons begone, there is no one like lady Sohyang. By the way, her belt buckle is embossed with the word POWER. Fitting, is it not? Cheers.

The proper pronunciation of "Sohyang" can be heard before the start of her Immortal Songs 2 performance of "Bridge Over Troubled Water", when the host introduces her as "SOH hee-yahng". The "hee" part is very quick and subtle. Note the "ahng" sound; it isn't "uhng" or "ohng" as too many non-Korean folks claim. You can use Google Translate in Detect Language mode to pronounce her full name, 김소향 . Here's the breakdown of the Hangul symbols in her name: 김소향 (Kim, So-hyang) 김 = ㄱ ㅣ ㅁ (k i m) 소 = ㅅ ㅗ (s o) 향 = ㅎ ㅑ ㅇ (h ya ng)

@@oahuhawaii2141 Thanks. I simplified it because 95 percent of Non-Korean folks struggle with it and end up with 'Sue yAng" or the like. At least it give them a comfortable word. I know how to pronounce it and still fail sometimes. For some reason, it is tongue-twister to most Mainland Americans - but they always show respect for her and try to get it right. Cheers.

Wonderful reaction! I think Whitney would love So Hyang, as she was such a gracious person. They could definitely talk shop at the same table. So Hyang is a force from the universe and a technical master! I, too, love how the audience in attendance is so very captivated and not shouting over the performer like we too often see in the west. I have a friend in the States that goes back 'home' every year and says that So Hyang is revered by her country's people. How can one not be moved?

The PHENOMENAL So Hyang was dubbed 'the Korean Mariah Carey' at the beginning of her career in 1996. Trust and believe that nickname was left at the station a looooooong time ago. So Hyang is in a league of her own. This event was in 2015, when she was 37 years old. In 2024, not only is she aging in reverse, her voice sounds better than ever. Her vocal range is still ridiculous, and her breath control remains insane.

It was always considered quite rude in Korean culture to scream or make a noise when someone was performing, or even to stand and cheer at the end, so polite clapping isn't an indication of how well a performance was perceived. This has relaxed somewhat so younger audiences are louder.

If you watch fan camera footage of the performance, you'll hear lots of crowd noise. The broadcast and official videos use the sound system's microphone feed, which filters out the unwanted noise.

Although I like Mariah Carey, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, your honesty. I don't believe Whitney Houston could have duplicated this performance. In my opinion, So Hyang updates and elevates song covers. Most times, she makes the original song sound like a demo. 😊 New subscriber.

I used to LIVE Mariah Carey when she that came out (Vision of Love) but she must me over the years. So Hyang puts her own spin on things by doing a totally different arrangement and that makes her even more special!

I'm not a Mariah fan either, but I am a big Whitney fan. However I think Whitney could only have dreamed of hitting that top note! Considering Sohyang's petite frame her belting is absolutely incredible.............. but she can sing the softer songs too. She does an absolutely brilliant, stripped back 'Amazing Grace kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g51_i7yklrCcoGg.html ..... and an equally beautiful rendition of the incredible jazz classic 'Misty' kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lc-mqdN8mLuxnKs.html

It's difficult to explain the pronunciation of her name, but the way you are saying it as an English speaker is fine. The H should be heard a little blending into the Y if you want to get closer to the Korean pronunciation.

@Q.Q. Fred or Maynard 😆 Being a home school family, my kids are always like, "Why is it spelled like that?! It makes no sense!" Like you said in psychology, or know, walk, ad nauseum. There are so many words in the English language that make no sense phonetically. I have to tell them, those are words you just have to know when you see them, (after basically memorizing them) because sounding them out will leave you nowhere," 😄 Ironically, our 16 year old is named Phoenix. Who thought, let's make a PH sound like F! But if we spelled in Fenix, we look like douche-bags 🤣 All of my other children's names are totally phonetic.

@@MrsRealistic “Fenix” sounds like a Chinese mega tech subcontractor (typically, with netting all around its edifices to make ending misery more difficult for their employees), stamping out silicon-based digital surveillance devices for the likes of Apple and Google, to further enable the global oligarchy’s hypnotizing of the masses, especially its youth, who for all practical purposes may as well have been born with the damn Fenix™ iBallandChain8000 smartdevices fused into their retinae. Good thing you stuck with the more conventional spelling… Hope the home-schooling is working out well for you. It seems like it could be quite challenging. Mariah uses her whistle register a lot because few singers can "sing" in that manner. Most professional singers only have developed their chest and head voices.
