I've noticed that I feel "better" when my house is neat and clean. Maybe the positive "energies" is a direct result of decluttering too.

What I find most interesting about her & her method is how much she developed the method based off of living in Japan and working with her Japanese clients, but how much it almost seems like we need it even more here in the US. Some things don't change no matter your culture.

People are usually all default in a particular way. It's funny how when we actively try to find the best way to live, even if we are different from each other, usually arrive at the same answer. Asking yourself "does this spark joy?" is just like minimalism. Keeping the things that have value to you close and discarding the rest.
@kwen2529
@kwen2529 2 жыл бұрын
value is a loose definition can mean materialistic value or sentimental value. Spark joy is internal/sentimental thing. im quite new to Kon Marie but i find it quite interesting, setting the mind to what i want to bring forward - things that make life more happy becz each piece is what we like, and functional can use and will use help me to send away those that dont really spark joy . of course she also gives exception things that is really essential to have but dont spark joys perhaps key to rooms practice saying thank you and give it some praise seems reasonable at a personal level it increases gratitude to small things in life if the item is absolutely essential.. then is good to keep in mind things work for one and may not for all

Love her space-saving clothes folding methods which allow you to see what you have.
@DragonKazooie89
@DragonKazooie89 5 жыл бұрын
I tried her folding method and it does save room. However, I never makes the clothes stand up when they are stored on shelves because they always fall over when I pull a shirt or pant out. I prefer to stack. Now if I can only get into the habit of actually putting my clothes away as so as I pull them out of the laundry rather than placing them on my dresser and let them sit there for a few days before I get tired of seeing them there and then actually put them away.

Just goes to show how unfair the world is ...in the developed world we are drowning in possessions ...the result of a materialist lifestyle.”I must have...I want...I gotta buy’. Other parts of the world have just subsistence lifestyles. Whether it’s Feng Shui, Konmari.....or whatever.....if we weren’t so bloody greedy we wouldn’t need to declutter in the first place.

yep and society and parents played a roll in telling us that having things makes you happier or that it shows you're a success. We've finally woken up to the fact that it's not true, that it makes everything worse (our mental well being and the well being of the planet). When you simply get rid of things it doesn't change you're mindset. By thinking of your ideal life it forces you to realize what is truly important and going through the exercise of choosing only those things that spark joy - you become a more mindful consumer (for example buying only when you truly need something or something that you will actually use not just because it's on sale or is a status symbol).

I know this disagrees with standard Japanese dictionaries, but I would say that tokimeku also has the meaning of sparkle, in addition to flutter or palpitate. The normal Japanese translation of sparkle is kagayaku, but I think that is close to "shine" than "sparkle". In certain instances, I think tokimeku can mean sparkle in Japanese. Of course, translation between languages is not a 1:1 correspondence.

@crazy4beatles

necessities can also spark a little joy. For example a broom. You'd think, ew no. Zero joy. But you need it so try out the brooms in the store. Which one feels most comfortable in your hands? Maybe you're really tall and regular brooms always make you have to stoop a little. But what if you found a broom that's taller and for once doesn't make you feel like stooping? Color is a nice way to spark joy. Maybe paint your existing broom to your favorite color or put a sticker on it of your favorite sports team, or pick a color that coordinates with the wall color in the closet where you keep it so that everytime you have to clean you see this beautiful color coordination.

I see many problems with this method. The Minimal Mom's method is much more practical. You don't declutter all at once, but in small doses, layer by layer. She also recommends deciding on what is needed, then choosing, narrowing down, keeping that and donating the rest (or quarantining those things that you're not sure about). It's not nearly as daunting as "holding up ever single item and asking "Does it spark joy?" What does that even mean?

I think she caused a wave of massive waste and reconsumption in America. She started selling 200 dollar tchotchkes more recently too. It's only a lifestyle change for a portion of the people that get into the craze. The rest are going right back to Target to get "minimal aesthetic" junk. Granted, she's not considered a minimalist but to the average joe/jane that realizes how much better they have it than some barefoot kid in a poor country it's a slap in the face.

To anyone reading: please research the KonMari method before implementing any part of it in your home. This method has philosophies + practices rooted in the Japanese religion known as Shinto. It is a religion the worships idols (false gods/man-made gods). If you believe in God and in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, then please avoid implementing the KonMari method. Using this method is considered engaging in and accepting idolatrous practices which God forbids us to do (See Holy Bible kjv to learn more). It is okay to declutter, fold, organize, trash, and donate things (in private), but be sure to do so in the Spirit, to practice godliness by the Christian faith. (e.g. Rather than thanking the items, always thank God for your items. If you choose to privately donate, pray to GOD in the name of Jesus that the items will bless someone. If you have unknowingly implemented this method or spread this idolatrous philosophy, you can always repent and ask God for forgiveness in the name of Jesus Christ and God will forgive you. To learn more, please read the Holy Bible kjv. Before reading, ask GOD for wisdom and understanding in the name of Jesus Christ. If you have any questions about the Bible, be sure to attend church and ask an ordained minister/preacher/pastor for help.

B Smith - good thoughts here. I appreciate her overall method of moving toward simplicity but thanking the item is like thanking an apple rather than the tree. Or even better, the creator of the tree. I thank God for his abundant provision as I give away what I have obtained (too much) by not trusting him completely. It's pretty simple - If you have two coats... give to someone who needs it. Bless you for sharing a kind a gentle warning.

Wow thank you for this comment! I didn't even realize how thanking the clothes conflicted with my Christian beliefs 🤯 This method is truly life changing but as Christians we really should be thanking God. Much thanks again

I think the “thanking an object” is more about closing a door on that object being in your life. It’s not expressing gratitude to an object. But yes, thanking God for his provision and blessing that object to service for someone else is a better focus for this method. Thank you for the adjustment tip.
@Nirrini
@Nirrini 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for noticing. I thought I was the only one. When she needed to “greet” a house whenever she came inside for the first time, and “thanking the objects” after decluttering, I thought “what?”. My religion, Islam, forbids “borrowing” others’ mindset, regarding to people that are not Muslim, so that we don’t end up imitating them.
