In his autobiography, Lee said the benefit of making this movie was being able to golf in Barcelona. Tsai Chin, the Chinese actress, is the sister of Mr. Chow of restaurant fame.

Jesus Franco, director of The Bare Breasted Countess, Virgin Among the Zombies and Zombie Oasis plus a bunch of porn, directing Christopher Lee, who understandably hated his career, Sir Stanley Baker, hero of Zulu, and Dirk Bogarde, one of the best actors the UK has produced, in a racist Scotland Yard detective film with random inserts from other Franco movies thrown in. Classic.
@graemesmith67212 ай бұрын
At least this one isn't quite as sleazy as Franco's usual fare. On second thought, more sleaze might have actually helped.

This is one of several movies directed by Jess Franco starring Christopher Lee as Fu Manchu, based on the novels of Sax Rohmer. As in the novels, Fu Manchu is opposed by Scotland Yard detective Nayland-Smith (played by former Robin Hood Richard Green), assisted by the Watson-like Dr. Petrie (played by former Watson Howard Marion Crawford). Rohmer was one of the most popular novelists of the early 20th century, comparable to Stephen King today, and Fu Manchu is his most famous creation, the archetypal "yellow peril" villain, spawning countless imitations, such as the Mandarin in Marvel Comics (Marvel actually acquired the rights to Rohmer's characters in the early 1970s, and added Fu Manchu to the Marvel universe as the father of Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu). Rohmer even created his own Fu Manchu knock-off, Sumuru, one of the first female supervillains in literature, and these Fu Manchu movies also spun off a couple of Sumuru movies, starring English actress Shirley Eaton (best known as the girl who is murdered by being painted gold in "Goldfinger") as Sumuru (though in the novels, Sumuru is Japanese). One of these, The Million Eyes of Sumuru, was riffed in Season Zero of MST3K (the KTMA episodes), and has since been riffed by Rifftrax.

Is there even a protagonist in this movie? I feel like the entire film is just Fu Manchu wandering around his castle, monologuing to his prisoners and broadcasting vague threats to the world. They keep cutting to other characters every once in a while but none of them seem to ever do anything, it's just Fu Manchu 75% of the time and he's the only one getting anything done lmao
@graemesmith67212 ай бұрын
There were several of these movies starring Christopher Lee as Fu Manchu, and they even spawned a couple of spin-off movies starring Shirley Eaton (the girl who's murdered by being painted gold in "Goldfinger") as Sumuru, another Sax Rohmer character. As in Rohmer's novels, the protagonist in the Fu Manchu movies is Scotland Yard detective Nayland-Smith, played by former Robin Hood Richard Green, but he's barely even in this one, so I can understand why there doesn't seem to be a protagonist.
