Damn. This movie had 3 Editors and no one realized a dead lady was still in the movie. lol.
@geoffreyfyfe22483 жыл бұрын
Having 3 directors didn't help. Credited director David Winters apparently had to leave mid-production due to some personal issues and another guy finished the film. Then a third guy did the Bellarian segments (which explains why they're so shoehorned into the film). Winters apparently even tried to put an Alan Smithee credit on instead of his name, but his contract prevented it.

Space Mutiny was filmed in South Africa. All space-battle footage is from Battlestar Galactica (1978). Several shots of the Galactica itself are shown in reverse.The movie was filmed mostly in a factory warehouse. Aware that the numerous large windows with daylight pouring through would spoil the illusion of the Southern Sun actually being in space, cinematographer Vincent G. Cox used color filters to give the sunlight an orange-red look, and asked David Winters to insert a line explaining that the windows were actually part of the Southern Sun's engines and/or reactor system. Unfortunately, the film processing lab mistakenly corrected the sunlight back to its original color, and Winters' replacement, Neal Sundstrom, never added any explanation for why the windows were there.The sequences with the Bellerians were added in post-production after the initial cut of the movie came in too short. Neither David Winters nor Neal Sundstrom wanted to come back to direct the sequences, so David A. Prior was hired to direct them instead.

This film couldn't have been saved no matter what was done. There's far more fundamental problems than what the sets looked like. I had read that a large part of the problem of this film is that it was shot in the last days of Apartheid in South Africa, and there was basically an embargo on the entire country.

This, in my opinion, is the ultimate episode of MST3K. Space Mutiny has the perfect blend of 80's shlock, bad action movie cliches, hammy overacting, and ridiculous dialogue that makes in an absolute comedy goldmine for riffs. Yet, the film is just competent enough to not feel like an absolute bore to get through. The riffs are just absolutely brilliant throughout the whole episode. I know a lot of people love Manos, and I do too, but the film itself is so broken and inept that it really drags at some points (as shown by Joel's famous "DO SOMETHING!" riff). I'd say Manos is the 2nd best of the Joel era (I Accuse My Parents taking the #1 spot) but Space Mutiny is truly the best overall. The Sci-Fi era really had some amazing episodes.
@micahphilson Жыл бұрын
Space Mutiny only competes with Overdrawn at the Memory Bank for the absolute best MST3K movie of all time, with MST3K The Movie being the third perfect one to show newcomers to the series the series before because, being a movie, it's a bit more polished.

@@daftoptimist I definitely think "I Accuse My Parents" is the best episode of the Joel era. The riffs about Jimmy's mother's alcoholism is worth the watch alone, as well as the jokes about Jimmy winning the essay contest. I think even Joel Hodgson said it's his favorite episode too. It's one of those episodes that stays consistently funny the entire time which is really tough to do with a lot of these movies. One of the other episodes that manages to do this is Teenage Strangler (another one of my favorites).

All seriousness aside, he was A-rab in West Side Story, where he was noticed by a young Vincent Furnier (a.k.a Alice Cooper) who would later employ the dancer/choreographer to help invent the theatrical rock concert. They probably had a much grander vision in mind, and then the budget got in the way. The budget always gets in the way. Do we rewrite this scene or do we just do as much as we can to achieve the original vision, even if it fails? We'll go with the 2nd option, thank you!
@paxhumana20152 жыл бұрын
@@jesusnthedaisychain , just because you have a small budget does not mean that you have to make a horrible film, case in point, El Mariachi, which had only a budget of $7,000, yet it is a cult classic in action, it spawned two more sequels with bigger budgets, as well as better box office sales worldwide, it had some Oscar nods, as well as nods, and possibly even wins, with other awards, and it made Antonio Banderas into a household name in acting worldwide. Space Mutiny needed the kind of mindset that the people that made El Mariachi had and you know it, folks.
@jesusnthedaisychain2 жыл бұрын
@@paxhumana2015 Which is why I was careful to mention their vision. They had an idea in mind, but unfortunately that idea would cost a lot of money to make it a reality. What was your point? Was it that good low budget movies exist? And water is wet. So what? Some ideas require a lot of resources to make them a reality, and there are only so many corners you can cut. El Mariachi could be made on the cheap because the story lends itself to that. They didn't need a lot of sets, or costumes, or effects, or extras. Small cast, a few ramshackle sets (which lends to the ambience), thrift store costuming, and the use of a lot of natural (free) light, all helps to reduce costs. A movie set on a space ship, in the future (which requires "futuristic" clothing), all indoors (so no natural lighting), etc..., it all adds up.

That's not all, they ripped off the model toyys and effects from Battlestar Galactica. And John Phillip Law who was in this movie also starred in the 1968 Italian film Diabolik the series finale for mst3k!

Nice to know there are more people who like Best of the Worst and Mystery Science Theater. There seems to be a real rift between the fans ever since Mike and Jay reviewed ZaAt! (also known as Blood Waters of Dr. Z) without mentioning MST3k once.

yeah I get the feeling that RLM don't particularly like MST and resent the crossover fandom, I remember jay or jack saying something to the effect of "Why would i watch someone else make jokes at bad movies when I can do that at home?" and it just made me shake my head that that's exactly the same reason why their channel has subscribers in the first place.
