Here is shown a compound mainsheet arrangement whereby a fine and course adjustment is achieved. Also shown is the use of a "continuous loop" for the traveller operation. This allows use of less overall control line.

Great video. Useful information I can apply to my Cal 25--I want to add the pelican hook to occasionally secure the boom over like you show--so smart. Thank you.

Nice tweaker design. Thanks, I may copy that. I’m currently hunting for mainsheet track designs that have the track line coming out and cleating, at the track carriage, like you have. All of the designs I see (except yours) have the track lines coming out and cleating at the end of the track. If the track it to be actively used then having it near the mainsheet seems to be intuitive to me and the additional purchase from human engagement at that angle would seem to be a plus. Can you talk a little about that please.

What do you want to know? I completely agree with you that having the controls centered makes more sense. The sequence for timing is always as follows: -release the tweaker -release the leeward traveler control -adjust the traveler with the windward control -reset the leeward control -adjust the main sheet course adjust as much as possible (I rarely if ever use the winch). -do the final trimming with the tweaker. Generally this is whatever is needed to center the boom. -if I can't get the boom centered then I'll release the tweaker again and raise the traveler more. Then retry centering with the tweaker. The only thing I've been interested in doing to upgrade my system is get a windward sheeting car. This system automatically releases the leeward traveler control in preps for the adjustment of the windward control.

Quick release main sheet. I cannot be the only one concerned by this?
@muckleyj
@muckleyj Жыл бұрын
As it turns out you are the first to voice concern. Are you worried about the pelican hook coming open? I can't recall exactly but I believe the hook is rated at 5000 lbs SWL. The scarier part of the setup is the small diameter of the hardware associated with the fine control block and tackle. They are rated appropriately but still appear small for being a single point vulnerability.

@@muckleyj Hi, just don’t like to see it all fly loose soo easily. There have been multiple deaths with main sheet control failures. One on an associate boat where of all things a preventer failed the block assembly fatally struck. A suggestion, just have a good size and condition shackle that can be undone, may take an extra minute but. Cheers S

What kind of solar panels are those? How do you like them? Thanks
@muckleyj
@muckleyj 4 жыл бұрын
The cheap kind from China. I got 'em on ebay. They work as described so I like them. Two of the 100w panels tied to 2 genasun MPPT boost controllers. I get ~12 amps at peak sun. I can plan on about 75A-hr per day.

@@muckleyj I am looking for a setup like that, mine is adjusted from sides and it is a pain in heavy air.

@@MrMedicAdnan, first and foremost release the main sheet just before you move the traveller. It will unload the bearings in the traveller and make moving it much easier. Generally, I run the traveller to the low side just before the tack, once down the helmsman commences the tack and I've moved to release the jib sheet, then take in the other. One the jib is set move back to the main sheet and in my case usually just harden up on the tweaker to center the boom - no traveller adjustments needed. If they are then ease the tweaker and take in the traveller.

@@muckleyj hi, I am grateful for this information, so its a pulley system to make moving the boom easier?
@muckleyj
@muckleyj 3 жыл бұрын
@@michaelsrowland yes basically. Without the boom controls then the wind would just push on the sail and the boom would swing away. The sail would act like a flag. I'll see if I can find some sailing 101 videos or other links for you.
@muckleyj

@@michaelsrowland around the 9 minute mark you can see an elementary demonstration of boom controls on a very small boat. The sails on this boat might total 50 sf. As the sail size increases the power is cubed. So a 100 sf sail would have 8 times the power of a 50 sf sail. My sails are over 300 sf. 6 times the size in the video. This means my sail is "6 cubed" more powerful. Or (6^3=216) ~200 times more powerful. Without a mechanical advantage in the boom control, it would require superhuman strength to control or adjust the boom. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pLtgh5uV3pbVpas.html
