Muddy Colors

Have you ever heard of "muddy colors"? After weaving for awhile you will either experience it yourself or hear of someone else kibbitzing over this specific situation. When you combine colors together in a project, but they don't look clear, you have muddy colors.
Ultimately, the muddy color problem is a contrast problem - meaning your colors are too close together on a grayscale so the eye has trouble distinguishing between them. But I have a few ideas on how to identify and remedy the problem! Please enjoy episode 153, "Muddy Colors".

Yes, great idea with the grayscale picture. I use it when quilting, weaving and painting. I am working on another quilt with a woven border for a show and worked hard getting the contrast just right. I want another ribbon! Cheers!

Why do all the cool people I want to play with live so far away. I use this technique for my tartan designs. I used it 30 years ago for quilting fabrics. We had little filters you could hold up to the fabrics. Now I simply use my black and white mode on my phone. Caryl - The Tartan Weavver

I was once playing around with weft-heavy weaves and I had these three colors, an orangey pink, a dusty green and a lavender. They were all about the same value. I wove the project putting two strands in the weft throughout and often put two different-colored strands in. I expected to get a twill effect, but instead these areas read as solid colors. Although this surprised me, the finished work is one of my all-time favorites.

I haven't been caught with a muddy color yet, but I have a friend that wants some towels made with a slate grey and maroon red and I'm afraid it'll be muddy. Off to take some pics and gmmake them b&w now!
