I still love this song and I'm 75! In 1970 was leaving the Navy after 6 years. The group is English. There are a number of terms in there we, as Americans don't use of are unfamiliar with, such as "...maybe we can make it in LayBy" That is highway rest area or a road pull out. Still digging it after all these years.

I like this view. "Do what you feel" doesn't necessarily mean taking advantage of the girl. It can mean enjoying each other's company taking a ride, going fishing, hanging with friends indoors or out. The time and sharing is what's valued.

I agree, we were like that in the 70's. We didn't need a restaurant or social function to be happy. If you were in to someone you could be happy riding around town or dirt roads. Just being together was all that was needed. Whether it was a single person or a group of friends. Somehow we always found something to do.

@@FailedBard I have guilt for driving impaired in the 80's. I never had a DUI, accident or hurt anyone. There were no designated drivers, friends let friends drive drunk because they were drunk, everyone was impaired on something really. The last few years I've wondered if I just missed the warnings or if there were any. I guess not. It seemed like hungover driving was worse than drunk driving. When I started bartending, I quit drinking because I couldn't stand how folks acted drunk and the smell of stale alcohol when I opened the bar. That job was a blessing.

@@everlyoshea Sober people seem boring when you're drunk, and drunk people just tend to be obnoxious when you're sober. Up until there was that start of a cultural change in perception towards drunk driving, there was no reason to stay sober at a bar, since everyone else was driving themselves home anyways. "Everybody's doing it" was, and still is, the largest driving force in society.

@@Falstaff-mr8fk Bluegrass goes back a lot further then that but back then it simply wasn't called bluegrass, instead it was "Hillbilly Music" Heck, the style of music goes clear back to old Irish tunes...Listen to "Hear The Wind Blow" some time and then listen to an Irish tune called The Connemara Cradle Song. Granted they dropped a few instruments and gained a few other over the years, but it's all pretty much the same style.

Glad to know that I am not the only one who thought for all these years that the lead singer's name was Mungo Jerry. I just discovered, using wikipedia, that Mungo Jerry was the name of the band. A name that came from one of a pair of cats in a T. S. Eliot poem about Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer. The musical "Cats "was based on the poem. For some reason the band didn't go with Rumple Teazer for the band's name. Ray Dorset is the proud owner of the chops. Funny story, a couple of the band members tried to get Dorset fired from Mungo Jerry at one point, but management decided to let them go instead. Chops ruled the day.
