I still love this song and I'm 75! In 1970 was leaving the Navy after 6 years. The group is English. There are a number of terms in there we, as Americans don't use of are unfamiliar with, such as "...maybe we can make it in LayBy" That is highway rest area or a road pull out. Still digging it after all these years.

You nailed it, the rich girl expects you to spend money on her, while the poor girl appreciates time with you, riding around or swimming in the sea.
@ms.capone37624 жыл бұрын
I like this view. "Do what you feel" doesn't necessarily mean taking advantage of the girl. It can mean enjoying each other's company taking a ride, going fishing, hanging with friends indoors or out. The time and sharing is what's valued.

I agree, we were like that in the 70's. We didn't need a restaurant or social function to be happy. If you were in to someone you could be happy riding around town or dirt roads. Mungo Jerry still freaks me out. He just need to finish those mutton chops and turn it into a full hair helmet
@unvettx7904 жыл бұрын
Glad to know that I am not the only one who thought for all these years that the lead singer's name was Mungo Jerry. I just discovered, using wikipedia, that Mungo Jerry was the name of the band. A name that came from one of a pair of cats in a T. S. Eliot poem about Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer. The musical "Cats "was based on the poem. For some reason the band didn't go with Rumple Teazer for the band's name. Ray Dorset is the proud owner of the chops. Funny story, a couple of the band members tried to get Dorset fired from Mungo Jerry at one point, but management decided to let them go instead. Chops ruled the day.

Kinks are one of my favorite bands. The beauty is that almost none of their songs sound the same. They are all over the place, and every song is awesome. Always had a soft spot for 'Come Dancing', personally, but I haven't heard a song by them that I DIDN'T like.

Mungo Jerry is the group, Ray Dorset is the singer. Ray lives in Poole/Bournemouth in Dorset UK. We see him shopping sometimes in Marks and Spencers store, in Westbourne. Still looks the same....he's a cool guy.

The "If her daddy's rich" line is suppose to mean that you don't have to impress the girl, like you two can go out and just do whatever you want to do.(Walking, getting ice cream, etc.) It doesn't have a sexual undertone to it, don't worry!

Hoping a rich father who actually loves his daughter would feel the same way; what father in his right mind wants his daughter to be with a person who thinks "rich = valuable", "poor = not so much" ?

I remember when laws against drink driving were brought in...and my friends father commented to me at the time, that the reason they were introduced was because young people like us couldn't hold our drink! I also remember the crash he had soon after, full to the gills!....hahahahaha!

I think you'd enjoy Tommy James singing 'Draggin' the Line', 1971, great tune! (He was also with The Shondells, they did 'Crimson and Clover'). It's not even a full 3 minutes long I don't think but is a great 'feel good' song.
