The Corvette changed for 1968, evolving into the 3rd generation for the American sports car. The sleek new styling looks like full speed standing still, a trait shared by most Corvettes. This week's Muscle Car Of The Week could be considered the top-gun of all '68 Corvettes, as it carries a 500+ HP 427 under the hood, an optioned named the "L88". L88 cars featured not only a distinctive hood, but a whole list of performance enhancements... the F41 performance suspension, J56 heavy duty brakes, a Muncie M22 4-speed transmission, and of course, the 12.5:1 compression 427 V8. The LeMans Blue roadster in the Brothers Collection is one of only 80 built in '68, and it might look like a nice Sunday cruiser, but it was a thinly disguised race car sold to the public!

A member of my family had one of the 80. He bought in 1976 from a Delphi executive that lived here in Rochester, NY. He drove it a little and let it sit for at least 15 years without touching it. I helped him get it out of the barn and his good friend (executives son) bought it back. It is either in restoration now or finished. Residing in Dallas Texas somewhere.

I'm a massive petrol head, but from the UK, so I was completely ignorant of the massive varience in style/design/performance of all these cars. For a start, I assumed that everything with '427' on the 'hood' (sorry we say bonnet!) had the same engine! Thanks for all these videos, they are really amazing and have introduced a whole new category of cars I had previously dismissed as rubbish (sorry!). Cheers and keep up the good work, P4ROT

I had a factory originally 1968 Corvette with the 427 390 hp L36 engine also in Lemans blue with blue interior, but mine had a white convertible top. Mine had no AC and no power steering.

'68 was a great year for Corvettes. I wish they had kept the tail lights the same for '69 with the reverse lights under the bumpers instead of moving them up to the inner tail light position.

The corvette is one of the best cars that America ever produced. And this is one of the baddest . This is American engineering at its finest . There is a reason that these cars bring 7 figures at auction. . This is one of the best examples I’ve ever seen thanks for showing this to us .

This is the car I wanted to buy new in 1968. But I couldn't quite afford it because of the wages I made at that time. The new L88 was $5,500. It had the reputation of being the fastest American production street car at that time, with the exception of the little Shelby 427 Cobra. (Which was said to be partially hand built) And yes, this Vette was faster than a 429 Shelby Mustang or a 426 Dodge HEMI. So in 1969, I was able to buy a new Olds 442 W30, which was factory de-tuned and the performance was disappointing. I shelled out $4,300 new for that bad boy and blew the engine a year later.

The 63-67 are Sting Ray The 68 is just Corvette The 69-76 are Stingrays. I could be wrong. 😃

Right you are. No Sting Ray emblem on 68's. I owned one. L88 427ci. I read its not know why Sting Ray wasn't put on the 68. I had the two tops. The convertible top and the hard top like this blue one. Mine was red on black interior. Wish I had it now!!!!

The L-88 is rare but is it really worth all the hoopla? My 1969 L-71 3x2 Holley 427/435 that I've owned since 1970, is very close to the L-88 in performance. You can find a video on youtube that features a drag race between an L-88 and L-71. The L-88 won but an extremely small margin. It's not as if it blew the doors off the L-71. I think it was less than one car length, folks. That's a lot of hype for not much get up and go. The L-88 will bring big bucks but if you're looking for sheer fun and almost the exact same thrill, you don't need an L-88.

my uncle had one in Australia in the early 70s when he sold it the buyer took it back to the states. He now has all the running gear from a l88 corvette under his hotrod.

So which version did I have in '68? It was a factory Roadster like this but in red, with a 427 and 4 spd with a single 4bl carb. Was there a 3rd version of the 427 car?

@@gregamerson9172 It was back in 1975, so I really don't remember....all I paid attention to back then was that it was Stock, Red, a Roadster, had a 4spd and a "427" in it. Very clean car and worth a MINT today, I'm sure. Sadly....we can't keep them all. ;-(

The L71/89 was the max street effort engine for the Corvette. It would beat a L88 off the showroom floor. The L88 had the potential to be the quickest 427 Corvette but the buyer would have to extract that performance himself. The cam it had was designed to run with open headers. The reason the L88 was rated at 430 horsepower was to discourage the average person from buying it.

I liked this channel because of the awesome cars, but also got to see them driven all out a minute. Except for certain cars I've noticed, like the L88. 😄 Bummer, you don't get to beat on certain cars. That's understandable. Go get on the 100k 69 Camaro, but not the million dollar L88. 👍🇺🇸😄

Kevin says no heater in the car but there are heater hoses...the '67 l88 was a mandatory C48 heater/defroster delete...but feds required a defroster in all cars starting '68, so I *think* the '68 L88 had a heater core for defrost but no heater setting...no view of the console in the vid...someone correct me if i am wrong. this vid shows the console and not seeing a heat setting kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jbWdrKWfurixqIE.html

Agree with Steve S, all L88's after 67 had a heater unless it was maybe a special export car. Like you say the new federal law for 68 eliminated the previous heater delete option.

Yes, both had solid lifters. No such high revs with hydraulic lifters with 60s technology.

I'm pretty sure the L71 did too. I think the L71 was the exact same engine as the L72 427 but the L71 had 3x2 induction and the L72 had a 4bbl

@@Yankeededandy62 Nope. Hyd. lifter big blocks only went to about 5,500 before valve float. If if they wound any tighter when close to new that didn't last long. I had 2 396's and 1 427. The only one that twisted tighter was a 325 hp. 396 that i built up to about 400hp. .510"lift Melling cam, high bleed rate lifters and long slot stamped steel rockers got it to 6,700 before i wussed out.

@@gregorytimmons4777 You sure, we talk about the same thing? The question was, if the L88 and L71 were solid lifters. Answer is yes. I just commented, that solid lifters instock configuration from the factory were able to rev higher than their stock hydraulic lifter siblings back then. Looking at the red line on the tach tells the same story.

Actually with that L70 something motor, the redline was set about a 1000 RPM too high, which ended up resulting in most of the motors being returned under warranty for a blown engine most of the time. and I think that happened to the L88 as well somewhat, and arent you going to atleast start the thing so the audience knows what a proper L88 sounds like, let alone drive it?

Yes, only the L88 in 68 and 69 used that high dome fresh air hood. The 67 L88 hood was also fresh air but the same height.

It should have a heater. Only the 67 was heater delete. A new law took effect Jan 1, 1968 requiring all cars to have at least a defroster and GM finding no practical way of providing a defroster without the heater, just eliminated the heater delete option.

No. You need a fan shroud in the city but at speed can cause you to overheat so the L88 factory race car gets no shroud.

Obviously NOT.......he's as close to these L88's as anyone can be, seeing as THE BROTHER'S COLLECTION most likely owns the biggest assortment of L88 Vette's on the planet, and even he stated: NO HEATERS CAME IN THE L88's. You're probably thinking of the L71. Lastly, you stated: "except for '67".......THIS IS A '68, AND IT DOES NOT HAVE A HEATER EITHER. Is it starting to sink in yet? When it came to "factory interior options", the L88's were basically stripped down hot rods. Again, I truly believe you are thinking of the L71. 12.5 compression ratio precludes the engine will NOT run on any pump gas. This car cannot be driven on the street.
