Come mushroom hunting with us! Lots of inedible mushrooms, most poisonous, some deadly* poisonous and some goods edibles to be found, let's take a look.
*Sometimes it's better to err on the side of caution the mushroom I identify as The Destroying Angel (Amanita virosa) could have also been a potentially suspect mushroom called Volvariella gloiocephala, these two can weather dependent look similar at first glance. The latter shouldn't have any of the volva on the stipe but also the cap of V. gloiocephala doesn't look like the cap of A. virosa but this example showed material on the stem, Mmmmm, yes the spores are different, no good with a microscope to examine them and there were text book V. gloiocephala growing nearby and they did NOT look like this suspect A. virosa. Yes one must be careful, so despite some books saying you can eat V. gloiocephala, i wouldn't as it can be confused with The Destroying Angel and as the name suggests...........

I grew up in the rural south US. We picked wild blackberries, Mayhaws (wild berries), muscadines (wild grapes), poke salad (wild spinache), and other berries that I can't remember the name. However, no one ate the mushrooms, and they were many in the woods. Where did you learn about mushrooms? Was this knowledge passed along to you? Just curious.

Hi a great question and in response I just finished a blog about this because it wasn't a simple answer. I figure many others might be interested or at least a bit curious about where those skills came from and let me tell you, it wasn't from books to begin with. So without further a do here's a link. hardcorecampingtools.blogspot.com/2024/06/where-did-bushcampingtools-get-his.html

@@BushCampingTools Very interesting column on the blog. I had a book on mushrooms, but I never trusted my interpretation of the photos enough to eat any of the wild mushrooms that I found. That was during the 80s survivalist movement. Thanks again.

@@willieboy3011 Yeah, the books can be great but nothing substitutes the those of the living mushroom pickers LOL.
