My biggest constraint is the use of real estate. I get that many home producers prefer VSTs. But if I want analogue gear, the rack takes up a lot of space.

Waiting for the MADIface Pro AVB FS including ADAT, 1MOhm instrument input and 4 individual hp outs (mini trs ok). Not kidding as to the fundamental message. Something portable and mobile providing ample connectivity and at the same time serving as a studio center piece. Especially in these times I find myself travelling around doing recordings here and there with my laptop that I use in the studio, too. I’d love to see it fastened to the top of an AVB Tool shaped item (so they share the same footprint) to which it is “hard-wired”. Two combo ins, two line ins, 2 mains, 2 inserts, 4 HP outs mini trs, seriously!).

@Katka Švecová For now.. But AVB is better for audio transport than Dante when it comes to quality(less jitter f.e.). You see that some manufactures are doing both, like RME. Both standards have its advantages.

I don’t need outputs on my sources. What I need ADC only with clock control so I can build a star network in my space but I have lot of analog gear that is mostly outputs as they are about 100 channels of audio outs from the keyboards. Some inputs are nice for the analog FX but that is like one box 16 in and out. My problem is it seems the manufactures make us pay for things we don’t need like all those extra outputs that I don’t need. Are there any input only setups?

Did I get this right? You connect the Digiface AVB via USB to the iMac and then the M-1610 Pro to the Digiface AVB. Then you connected the M-1610 Pro Via Ethernet to the AVB Switch...? - Which Switch did you use? I have heard that you cannot use Standard Ethernet Switches but need specific ones... Thank you very much !

I've been planning to build a new setup from scratch with a Fireface UFX+ at the heart of it but I love the flexibility of AVB and it is clearly the future. I see in the video that you're combining these by using both a UFX+ and an M1610 Pro. Isn't that kind of redundant since they have a lot of overlapping I/O? It's basically a very expensive AVB-to-MADI converter when used like that, unless you really need all of the I/O on both boxes. Or am I missing something? I'm also unclear on how the preamps and other components compare between these AVB devices (e.g. AVB Tool and 12mic) compared to the UFX+, Micstasy, and some of your other devices. If my goal is best possible sound quality, should I go with the setup in the video or wait for higher end AVB devices? Is there a Fireface AVB in the works? The website would really benefit a lot from more thoroughly explained distinctions between the product lines and maybe a wizard for choosing what you need, since there are a lot of products to look at individually.
@RMEAudio
@RMEAudio 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Seth, Thank you for these great questions. In this scenario we needed the UFX+, because we wanted to record and monitor a lot of different sources (drums, vocals, synth, guitar etc). So we used the UFX+ as the interface, keep in mind the M-1610 Pro is a pure AD/DA converter, while hooking up all relevant sources. As you can see, we had an R10 API rack full of elysia modules. This was hooked up directly to the M-1610 Pro because the 24+ dBu gave us sufficient headroom to drive all the modules. That gave us the possibility to hook up a DI bass to the UFX+ and then process it though all the modules with no latency. Our AVB devices are the most recent products in our lineup. Hence they benefit from newer technologies, BUT this doesn’t mean, that our „older“ devices such as the Micstasy are irrelevant. In fact, we have producers who use all our preamps differently due to slight sound differences. For example: the Micstasy is often used for classical recordings, while the XTC has a huge community amongst rock and pop producers. No matter what RME product you choose, you can’t go wrong. It’s all down to your taste and production setup.

Marc: how did you connect that Elysia Qube to the 12Mic at 2:30 when there are no XLR/ line outputs…? I want to incorporate outboard analogue gear into my signal chain to edit the parameters on the fly through my DAW, instead of burning onto the original recorded track, but the 12Mic has no analogue output sends nor returns. How can I do this?

This feels 4 years too late to be of much use. I tried to get AVB to be cross platform ages ago and zero companies were fully compliant with the platform and everyone refused to build systems that were able to work with each other. Even if you are truly compliant, AVB is now outdated and outmaneuvered by other protocols simply because it was slow to develop. Where were you 4 years ago when I needed you??

In terms of AD/DA, the ADI-2 Pro is perfect. The only thing you need to manage is a monitoring solution, since the ADI-2 has no separate monitoring output.

What network switch are you using in this setup? I know there are a few lists out there for 802.11ba switches (correct me if I have the wrong standard for AVB) but they feel a bit out of date. And in researching the AVB products from RME they seem awesome but I’m concerned about expanding since it’s not clear what defines a compatible switch. Do switches need to specifically support AVB (and/or 802.11ba) or will any switch work if it has definable QoS? Looking forward to the day when I buy an AVB RME unit! Just waiting to actually have a need for it.
@RMEAudio

In this scenario, we used a Luminex Gigacore 10 Switch. The AVB standard is 802.1BA and we recommend Luminex but there are many options available from Presonus and L'Acoustics. If you have bigger installations, Cisco and Extreme Networks have also certified switches in their portfolio. It's always important to use a switch certified by the Avnu Alliance. I hope this helps you out :-)

Are you going to develop a USB audio interface with AVB? Going from the 12-Mic to the M-1610 to the Fireface UFX+ is over complicated and costly in comparison to the Focusrite Rednet or Motu AVB.
@RMEAudio
@RMEAudio 3 жыл бұрын
The RME AVB converters can be connected to various MADI interfaces as well as to the Digiface AVB. rme-audio.de/digiface-avb.html A connection via MADI to a Digiface Dante is also possible. This makes it easy to combine different systems.

I have a question regarding integrating AVB RME interfaces: How does it connect to the computer? Directly in the ethernet port of any computer? Does it absolutely need an AVB to USB interface? I ask for use with a single device, let say the 12Mic. Thanks!

Yes you need the Digiface AVB for a Windows PC ... I read that Mac's already have the AVB protocol implemented but I have no idea what kind of hoops you need to jump through to make it work without the Digiface, if that's even possible... with that said it works without issues on my PC.

RME is awesome when it comes to driver support etc. If you're crying about RME coming up with AVB stuff, that is just how the world works, or how do you think things should go when a company adopts new technologies?
