I can't tell you how much I appreciate your commentary. As much as it's fun to see people react and just say, "that was awesome" or whatever, dropping some knowledge when you notice things adds so much. I have enough background in music to care (I sang in chorale and played French Horn), but not enough to speak to some of their specific choices they make in their arrangements the way you can, and it makes me appreciate them even more hearing you articulate your thoughts.Thank you!

Dynamics, dynamics, dynamics. They’re experts at it

Avi's ability to hit those low notes was honed as an opera/classical voice major at Mount San Antonio College in California, where he was a member of 3 choral groups - a chamber choir (which is where he got the idea of using "Christus Factus Est" as the "Aha!" opener), an award-winning choral group called Singcopation, and the notorious a cappella group Fermata Nowhere. He was actually offered a position as basso profundo with the Los Angeles Opera when he was recruited to join PTX for their appearance on The Sing Off. One of my favorite Pentatonix covers is "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You." It's simple, no fireworks, but the arrangement is magic and the harmonies are mesmerizing.

This has become my new favorite ptx reaction channel. I love the depth to which you listen and pay attention to the notes and harmonies and what they’re doing. It’s so interesting to see from the perspective of someone who can really appreciate what they do. Also, one thing to say is you’ve mentioned a few times how good Mitch and Kirstie sound together which is definitely true! But the absolutely beautiful thing about the trio is how interchangeable they are. They are magnificent at switching the solo around and it doesn’t matter who is singing the background parts, the sound is always so rich and full. Mitch and Kirstie obviously blend well together with their ranges but Scott and Mitch do fabulous work while K solos and the same for Kirstie and Scott when Mitch is at the forefront.

If I remember correctly this was the groups first track post sing-off and just after the company reneged on the contract that they were supposed to get from winning the competition. I've been told that it was filmed on a go-pro in the bottom of a stairwell. So to hear the quality of the sound considering the equipment that it was recorded on is absolutely incredible. I love watching these older videos so we can see how much they have improved over the years.

As a classically trained singer, I love your theoretical commentary and analysis. And especially as a lover of early music (my thesis was on the evolution of music from prehistoric through the Renaissance), hearing someone on KZfaq use the term organum, and even going so far as to find an example(!), makes my heart happy.

I'm so enjoying your reactions! I like the pauses and analysis. If you want a glimpse of pre-babytonix you could search for the video "Trio Sings Telephone by Lady Gaga in Concert" on Malcolm James' channel. It is from the year before the Sing Off and is Kirstie, Mitch and Scott in a High School concert. The videos of the 3 of them back then got them somewhat well known by other singers, and I remember an interview where Avi said he had seen the videos before he joined up with them, and I think Ben Bram, their arranger, who is the one who encouraged Scott to form a grouo for the Sing Off (and worked on the show) had seen them too and suggested Scott base the group around that Trio with added bass and beatbox.

I forgot to add Avi is a Basso Profundo and is classically trained.

Avi has a degree in opera music. This is one of their first videos. They had No money. Standing together filmed on an iPad.

All us Pentaholics know these videos off by heart, so hearing you break them down is wonderful. I'm a fairly seasoned musician, but you are teaching me things I didn't know.

Sometimes it's hard to hear Avi. I swear they turn down his mike, mostly because he can and has blown the speaker system. He has a beautiful warm chocolate voice that spans 5 octaves and when he gets a solo part, people are amazed. Try some of Avi's solo music for a surprise at how talented he really is. He's a prolific songwriter,arranger and tends to layer his own harmonies. Don't think you'll be sorry for listening to anything About does. Thanks!😅

Based on your reactions & your vast musical knowledge, I'm going to suggest you do their "Evolution of Music" video. It's a journey thru music, done as a medley, live....& it's epic. There are other Evolution videos as well, that are basically medleys of an artist's catalog. Michael Jackson, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, & Beyonce are the ones that blow your face off lol. All done live as well. One takes. Well, they generally do 3-4 takes & choose the best one. Their transitions in the Evolution videos are insane .whew chile lol!

Welcome to the Pentatonix fandom, we are called Pentaholix, since we are definitively addicted to the sounds of PTX. First note: PTX does not do covers, they do upgrades. Second note: 95% of everything you here they do without electronic effects or enhancements. Really! If an instrument does get used you normally see it. Hey, acapella masters have the right to expand once in a while. My favorite recommendation is to have new re-actors go look at the catalog of PTX releases, start early years, and come forward. To get the full experience of seeing the growth of the group and to learn the names of each member. Now my challenge is to after looking at the catalog of PTX releases choose the song you truly think could not be done better than your favorite version and the song that you really do not like the original version. After listening to each, you will be a Pentaholix.

Great reaction, as always! I loved the Gotye song, and saw a reference to PTX on that video years ago. This was the first PTX song I ever heard, and I was immediately hooked. I love how they pick songs that fit their skills - not sure how to say that, but it's true. Others like this are Valentine, Papaoutai, Radioactive and Carol of the Bells. They sound like they were made for PTX to cover. The opening choral segment you mentioned is not surprising. Avi was deeply involved in many of their early arrangements, and he had studied opera performance and composition in college. He had seen a video of The Trio online and thought they would be fun to sing with. He had been in a couple of men's singing groups which had performed medieval choral music. A great example of his bringing this music to PTX was the opening piece to their live performance of Imogene Heap's "Aha!", where they begin with Cristus Factus Est, and then move right into Aha!. Avi does some incredible overtone singing in some other pieces like AHA! He did in live in lots of concerts. You really should check out Voiceplay for the lowest bass in the business. Geoff Castelucci is phenomenal. Try Valhala calling or Hoist the Colors for some great singing.

Really enjoying your reactions as they are so different. I know next to nothing about music technically but your view gives me more appreciation for what they do. Spoiler alert: they never spread out the “mad bits” 😂

I understand all Avi’s reasons for leaving, but in my opinion his classical operatic training is one reason the made it. He brought knowledge of musical styles and techniques that the trio had not experienced as child performers in local productions, he was the only one of them to have completed a firnal degree (Scott and Kirstie were college freshmen and Mitch still in high school. Kevin was musically trained (cello) but not in voice and it wasn’t his major. So he knew things like you are pointing out and brought not pop, not musical theatre, not high school/church choir knowledge. I think if their base had been from the sane musical background as the trio, they would have been much less interesting as a group.

Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole! You asked if Ago can go lower...um yes. He has broken speakers. He can also do this thing where he sings 2 different notes at the same time. I know there is a name for it but forget what it's called. The most clear example of this is when they perform "Aha" live. You can hear it at the Hollywood Bowl performance but amore fun reaction video is too Aha live in Singapore. The audio recording is from an IPhone but their performance, both Avid and Mitch is just insane. Something to add to the list to check out.

So thrilled that you are sticking to the early stuff. You will love seeing how they develop over time. Don't forget that they have early Christmas songs too and now is the season for them. The Christmas songs released BEFORE 2015, in release date order are "Carol of the Bells", "Little Drummer Boy", "Angels We Have Heard on High", "White Winter Hymnal" with an amazing hand-clap sequence, "Winter Wonderland/Be Happy mashup with Tori Kelly, "Mary, Did You Know", a huge hit, "That's Christmas to Me", "Silent Night", "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", "Hark the Herald Angels Sing", "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", "Sleigh Ride", "O Holy Night", "Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel", and "Go Tell it on the Mountain".

There are fa vids for each of them that have collected snippets to demonstrate each of their ranges, if you wanted to look around. Or you can just wait and see. I’m pretty sure their ranges have expanded so to maturity and regular training as adults. In Mitch’s case it’s also a matter of just letting go. In high school, the actual rules of competitions for school chorus and the reality of being a small gay boy in Texas did not encourage the use of his higher range. The show was also not supportive. But once they were on their own he began to work on it.

Their newest holiday album, which is mostly greatest hits of theirs, ends with 8 new releases which includes "O Holy Night". DO NOT react to "O Holy Night"(There is also an old "O Holy Night" they did years ago, which is less complicated). It is EPIC....but I'm not sure you will be able to handle it. I’m really loving your reactions and lessons! You hear sooooo much more than I do, and it makes it so fun. This was the very first song that of theirs that I listened to back when it came out. Sadly, I missed out on years of joy because I didn’t really listen to them again (and now obsessively!) until 2021 when The Prayer cover came out. 💜

I would like to suggest Evolution of Beyonce, which will introduce you to their spectacular skill of transitioning between songs of different keys, tempos, and tone. There are multiple jaw-dropping transitions and movements within songs that will have you pausing delightedly throughout! I'm married to a composer and it's so fun to see someone else with musical knowledge finding joy in these little and big moments of PTX! If you're looking for a more modern PTX lineup song that showcases some fantastic bass and their skill at mashing up two songs, New Rules x Are You That Somebody is fantastic, and so is their super cool version of Havana, with Scott singing a sultry lead.

Usually the interruptions irritate me but your breakdown and explanation add to my experience. I’m not musical but a music appreciation course I took in college ( 1974 🤯😳😜 ) made me an appreciative music lover of all types of music 🎶 : Baroque, a cappella especially 😊.

Superfruit... Scott and Mitch duo channel. Not a capella BUT being kind of a spin off subgroup of PTX, you could group them with your a capella group reactions, or a just a stand alone group. They are magnificent!!! They collaborate with other artists. I think you would appreciate their rendition of Katy Perry's Rise. They have evolutions of Beyonce, Rhianna, Lady Gaga, the tv show Empire Songs . Two of my faves are Nicki Minaj Feeling Myself and Hip Hop goes Broadway 1 and 2 ( well, three faves) They have bars and flows or whatever the rap lingo is. I don't understand all the musical jargon. I just love PTX, Superfruit, and mostly Mitchell Grassi. PTX cover Macklemore and Ryan Lewis Can't Hold Us and Ariana Grande's Problem. Mitch is a natural born rapper. Of course he can sing the phone book. They all can! I really enjoy the educational breakdown with your reactions. I'm learning things. And I'm sure you know by now they have originals. Popspring 2016 is a good intro to their original music and has a great Evolution of Michael Jackson. Anything done in the studio they can also perform live. Daft Punk and Bohemian Rhapsody are fan favorites. Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole. I'm just a little ahead of you. I recently discovered them and Home Free early fall of this year. Believe it or not, my singing voice goes quite a bit deeper than Avi’s (although his tonal range goes a bit lower than mine, but my growl range is vast). How can a human voice go that low? Genetics plus training.

If I remember right, this was recorded as a live performance in a parking garage. Those beat drops still get me, and Mitch's slightly haunting melody. I think Gotye would be embarrassed at how much better their version is than his lol.
