Hey Mustie! Young lad from the UK here, I had the 125cc version of this bike when I was 17 and its the exact same! Identical, even the engine parts and build. Got some fun advice for you if you continue work on this bike. The intake manifolds are gold dust, make sure they dont crack. Good luck getting that airbox out, you cant unless you drop the engine. Stator is known for burning out, check the copper for black residue if you want to. 8 valves is a lot in a high revving 2 cyl so they need checking often. Bike is pretty much unmodifiable, change exhaust, ruin airflow. Change air filter, ruin airflow. Change carb jets, ruin power. Rear cyl known to get hotter than front, a fun way to reduce the build up of temp is to run carb to rear cyl slightly rich to cool cylinder. The carbs may be built with soft screws and they mash really easily on purpose to stop tampering. Somehow you managed to get the bowls off with no issues. Maybe 17 year old me didnt know about JIS drivers haha. Brings back some good memories, I loved my Hyosung. Great build quality and such a looker. I slash cut my exhausts and it sounded absolutely bonkers revving to 11,000.

It never fails to amaze me how people will spend thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars on a piece of machinery or a vehicle and then park it outside with absolutely no protection from the elements. Is putting a $8 tarp on it too expensive or to difficult to put on?

I bought my HYOSUNG for $3500 baby spankin' brand new and the 250 engine had more than enough guts to keep up with 70mph traffic ; it ran great and I always got comments about how quiet it ran . The HYOSUNG is just a Korean made Suzuki

I know the 650's they offered in the UK were Suzuki SV engines, so I'd take a good guess that the 250 is originally a Suzuki lump too. They have a pretty good reputation here if looked after. They also offered a 650 sports bike too, great value if you were on a budget.

Its amazing how they can pack so much into such a small space.

When I had a rust inside my tank I filled it completely with white vinegar. Left it for 24+ hours and it came out like new. You have to use baking soda to neutralise it. I then added some oil to some gas to swish around to stop it flash rusting. Love your videos as always different 👌👌👌

The Right Stuff sealant has saved me o many occasions. I’ve done sealing jobs with that stuff that’s over 15 years old now and still not leaking. I’d recommend The Right Stuff sealant any time. Stuff is great.

With the carburetor screw that was hard to break loose, some valve grinding compound on the tip gives a lot more grip and makes it come out much easier as long as you apply it before you totally ruin the drive head. I just love all your videos, especially the VW related ones. Thanks for the regular entertainment!

Hi Mustie, Regarding the gas tank, I saw something that really impressed me. Country Boy Gas Garage cleaned out a bus gas tank with vinegar and shook it up over a week. It needed a vacuuming out. I was amazed how clean it got. Rust was 98% gone. God bless and take care from your long-time California subscriber.

Hello, I've been watching you off and on for 9 years. You are a great mechanic and a man with great reasoning skills to figure things out. Onward and upward.

Evaporust and a tank sealant/liner could possibly bring that tank back to life. You can't really tell what the tank condition is until it is cleaned out, so no guarantees on that, and I'm sure you know that. There is a clone of Evaporust that works, but it does take a bit longer using EDTA and Citric Acid.

Just so you know you are influencing the youth. My son just grabbed his toy leaf blower and said he was going to fix it like Mustie and set it down and said “hey guys and how’s it going.” Then proceeded to diagnose its problems. He’s 4 hahaha

hyosung builds realy good bikes, they started in the late 70´s with license builds of suzuki motorcycles, so they have a lot of experience. They are big in 125cc bikes, dont know about the US but you see them often in Europe and asia ofcourse. i owned a ST7 so the big fuel injected 700cc sister of the aquila, it was a nice beginner bike for me.

Rewelded it Or get a new tank? On the oRing. Add a drop of super glue on the ends. Hold it together and its ready. Thats how those oring kits are made. Plus the have a razor blade to cut the ends flush. My old work place had kits. Seldom we had orings ready from the manufacturer available. The guys at the shop we real cool. Thats how i learned. 😊

Been watching Mustie1 for quite some time now. These videos just resonate with my inner mechanic. Similar age with a mechanical and engineering background. I can't wait to see what the videos are going after next to fix. I just spent a week working on a bike of my own. Had similar fuel tank scum but I found a good fix for it. First rinsed out the fuel tank and then filled it with white vinegar and left it for a couple days to soak. Not perfect but I think it would do wonders for that fuel tank. As long as it is not leaking it has repair potential.

I would say put some bolts in the gas tank and shake it up for a while then rinse it out. Maybe put some gas tank sealant in it. I think the gas gage arm fell off and is in the bucket. The pine needles were around the cap when you flipped it over. It is not a bad looking bike. Adjust the lifters. You might get $700-800 for it. All the lights work and the horn and it is low mileage and runs good. If the tires are good and you can clean the tank then sell it... or keep it as a putting around bike. Got any nephews old enough to ride? I would just hate to see something that intact ripped apart.

Try to save the motorcycle as is, there's no sense in making something else out of a bike that's already in top shape, that's my recommendation. If it ain't broke, don't fix it 🙂

Watching in the UK when I should be going to bed. 🤣Great work on working through the problems and love your joy at getting thinks running again 👍. It would be great to see a short format video on doing the tank and then cosmetically making the bike look as good as possible.

I looked it up on the internet and they are still made with lots of parts available.

Tank is savable. The o ring has failed around the filler. People remove the rust using vinegar and aquarium gravel, screws, nuts and bolts to agitate the flakey rust. You can then line it with tank cote or any tank lining compound or just run it with a good filter if it doesn't leak. Looks like a good bike. Engines designed by ex Suzuki engineers

Given how it runs well, I'd try to clean the tank and seal it and run it. Cycle Trader has these for about $2500.

I bought a 98 Rebel 250 here in the uk . Been standing for years onside a garage . Tank was like yours . Never managed to get it usable . I bought a Chinese replacement from the usa . Cost under £100 and solved all the problems . My carb was even worse than yours . Bike has only 3k miles on it and looks and rides as new now . Great video . Only just found you .

I worked my way through college by working at my uncles gas station. Under the right conditions, the gas tanks in the ground can accumulate water in them. One of our customers came in because he had just filled up his tank at another gas station and it quit running and he coasted into our station. We tried everything, spark, fuel and could not get it to run. Then we smelled the fuel and it was water. When he filled up his tank at the other gas station it was nothing but water. I think that may possibly be what happened to this motorcycle.

if I recall correctly. and i rarely do, Hyosung bought the rights to i believe the suzuki VL engine out of the intruder. they poked/prodded tweaked etc and put it in the aquila and also their GT range (both the naked and the fully faired GT250R before giving it fuel injection on the later models/mk2s. A lot of S.Korea and chinese manufacturers were doing this at the time (buying the rights to the smaller japanese stuff so they could pump out bikes en masse, for their domestic markets, to then branch out to europe, and II guess to a smaller extent, the US. its a shame as everyone thats ridden/owned these bikes loves them. the GT250/Aquila (for the UK they also make 125cc versions too as our licencing laws prohibit learners from riding anything above 125cc/15.5hp, I passed my test nearly 20 years ago, i might be wrong)

MUSTIE!! Fun stuff buddy! I saw a Kawasaki drive train used in a unique way and you might like it. This was about 1990 at Sky Cycle Salvage Yard out in Lunenburg. You would've LOVED this place!! Long gone now. Well, they ran their metal compressor with the shell of a Kawasaki 750 and it worked well!

Mustie1 and coffee Sunday morning is complete. On the bowl gasket issue I have a idea 💡 but don't know if it will work. O-ring gasket marker kit could allow you to make a new gasket. Except for the one that you have it has a funky two hole section that looks like it has to be sealed separately. My 💡 moment for the day. 😂🤣🤣🤪

Because it sent its entire life sitting outside the tank filled up with water from the bad design of the filler. They probably made the filler recessed like that so any small dribbles when you filled it would stay and evaporate instead of running down the tank. Unfortunately when the seal failed it allowed the well when filled with water drain into the tank. I bet that's why it started running poorly and then quit running when the water clogged the carbs.

Tanks are £200-£300 here in the uk. loved the vid. Ive got a Yamaha xt125 in my workshop, 2010 with only 330 miles from new which i have to get going this year, great information from you as to where to start.

You can get those piston rings and cylinders wet if you put the oil in then use your compressed air to blow it around.

Hi from the UK I am very impressed by your diagnostic skills. Quick check of the internet shows that This model motorcycle same year of manufacture is worth more than the $500 you suggest . here in the uk you could get £1300 to £1500 for it in this condition providing tank issue is sorted . the Bike looks good, isn't a rust bucket, one careful if not the most knowledgeable owner, low mileage not raced or rallied as they say in the UK. Search of US websites show models of similar vintage and higher miles available for $1600 -1900. My recommendation is sort out the tank and the leaking filler cap , lots of good tips using evaporust etc in the comments and sell it on . Use the money to buy something else

Great show! The tank inside must not be that bad. Up is a splash plate that is made of poorer steel and Rost much faster. All the water comes inside because the drain line from underneath the fuel cap is blocked. So all the water passes the upper sealing

I think I might check torque on heads. A impact drill with a JIS bit and some lube is good to get the carb screws out. Set the drill on a low setting at first and work your way up. Love this one!❤

an aftermarket split tank from the Harley type could be persuaded to fit on there, and give the bike a new lease of life, they were indeed Cloned engines from Suzuki's custom bike range, the VL650 was a pretty popular Custom/cruiser here in the UK for a while, I think they have rebranded to Keywee or something like that these days. The tank itself is quite probably savable, by filling it with a rust killer, then using a propitiatory sealing agent ( after removing the sender unit), and yes they had a habit of ingesting water via the tank filler cap screws as they didn't seal well, most guys here in the UK that own them fill the space on the rim with Silicon to stop the water getting in, 80% of the electrical problems were traced back to bad earthing, on most bikes, a common issue, remedied by cleaning and redoing the earth points, and filling all the connectors with Dielectric grease to avoid corrosion

Over the years I have encountered several rusted, gunky gas tanks. I have found that filling the tank with pepsi cola and allowing it sit in a warm place for a day or two will clean the tank very well. Looking at this tank a second application might be necessary. I have been watching your videos for 2 years or so...I often get involved in recovery of "used up" machinery and enjoy your approach. Thanks for the entertaining and informative hours.
