So when you're ready to take this mower to the next level I can hook you up with some left over and sample hydraulic goodies to convert that to a hydrostatic drive (industrial, not mower type). That would work better than the disk drive for wheelies, towing cars, etc., than the slippy disk drive and offer the added benefit of being complex and cool. The whole show could fit under the seat driven by the driveshaft.

Mustie is probably one of the most watchable guys on KZfaq, never a drama and always takes the time to explain the principal of the system or what he's about to do. The best thing about Mustie is that everyone is willing him on and commenting back to the screen just like he does 😂 his enthusiasm for not just scrapping it because it's failed is infectious. Well done from across the pond in the UK.

In part I'm the same as mustie1, few years ago I took a lawn mower that was going to the tip (dump) and fixed it up . I only spend like £4 for a new cable and a few hours work and sold it in the end on ebay for £90. Just recently I pulled another mower from a skip (dumpster for you Americans ) and I know it runs, just need a bit of work and tlc.

Darren watches, relies, and pays more attention to FB comments. Very rarely does he ever reply to or answer a YT question/comment. He must get thousands of each- more than I'd want to deal with. Placing a huge importance anywhere can backfire, Trolls are everywhere. A few years ago- I made a friendly comment that something was "wrought iron" and actually quipped back "how do you know it's wrought?" I'm surprised he didn't know what that means, or he was just being a smartass. Some people have such an ego- they have a hard time with someone knowing something they don't. I feel nearly everyone has _something_ to contribute, past experiences, etc. Some know a lot- some just enough.

I totally agree with your philosophy. I taught myself about small engines by tearing them down, figuring out how they worked, and fixing them. A friend of mine owned a small engine business. He had five mowers that had not run in years sitting in his back yard, and he gave them all to me when he moved. I just started tearing them apart over the last couple of years. I fixed two of them completely, built a good mower completely from scratch out of two others, and finally got the fifth one running two days ago. I have a few things to button up on it, but it's running pretty well. In the meantime, I have worked on nearly every type of small engine imaginable now, and have started taking paying jobs recently. To cut a long story short, I am 100% self taught, and taught myself simply by taking them apart and learning through trial and error. That's the way it should be done.

I grew up taking things apart and putting them back together. Dad brought home 3 boxes of engine parts when I was 15 and asked me to put it together. The following day when he got home I had it done. He opened his briefcase and handed me the manual and told me to make sure I did it right... my wife says there is nothing I can’t fix. Maybe, but that’s because of all the stuff I’ve taken apart with no instructions. Cheers.

I offered $13.5K cash for an '83 Mercedes SEL (in 85) with a busted timing chain from a consignment guy selling for a bank, who'd repossessed it. Bank said That's WAY too cheap, we want to verify the issue before we'll accept. Mechanic tore the engine apart, expecting the work. When the bank finalized the sale and I didn't give him the work, he was pissed and randomly threw MOST of the parts in 2 boxes. No manuals or anything, first MB I'd ever worked on. Parts ran another $3K - no internet back then - and you bet my ass was tight trying to make that much money run for me. Made it run like a top and was near 300K miles last I saw it, when the ex got it in the divorce.

I still have two of them running, One from the 60's one from the 70's still doing their jobs in rough terrain. Don't ever take one to a repair shop. They don't know what they are doing, and will charge you to experiment. Do all your own maintenance and like Mustie1 says, learn what is going on, and figure it out for yourself.

I knew a guy back in the 80's who when he was in shop class in high school in the 70's didn't like the way the metal lathe was working, so he took it apart. Teacher saw him with the lathe all spread out around him and called his parents to discuss how they were going to buy a new lathe for the school but by the time they got to the school he had the lathe back together and working the way it was intended.

Snapper was sold to Simplicity then Briggs , I have one I got for free and I had to fix it but it didnt have that time bomb gearbox with a chain like yours but you fixed it like always. That was a tough one, I also looked for manuals and you would have to order one and wait there is no guaranty it would help you they might want to sell you a new gear box and its probably not available. The popular craftsman gear boxes especially the hydro's are weak at best and if you start adding hills and attachments look out. The john deer hydro gearboxes are made in Japan and are 2500 for a new one. Any shiny mower at the big box store are borderline strong enough for cutting grass and most guys like the pre hydro manual gear box models better. Guys say watching Mustie is like your memory of your dad helping you fix things, I have never seen a guys dad fix a mower like that , maybe if he owned a mower shop. Remember the end of forest Gump when he was cutting grass for free at his high school that was on a snapper and was the best job he ever had. There is nothing better than cutting green grass.

I've only recntly started watching your channel. Your philosophy of explaining what you do and why and then the justification you have given in this episode about not looking up "how to".... not everything is searchable and sometimes you have to go with gut. Sometimes I look something up to short cut the hassle out of it. Generally - you've inspired me to take on more rust heaps than before and actually enjoy the challenge/fix up and be proud that not everyone can do it. Thank you and keep up the good work!

You inspire those of us without a lot of mechanical education that we can diagnose the source of a problem. It does help though to have some experience and to take pictures if you're not going to make notes on how things came apart and go back together. I appreciate your rant. In my youth I had a gentleman mentor men in logical thought and mechanisms. I think I was sixteen , no father in the picture and he saw something in me and took me under his wing. Before hid death in 1978 we had restored 3 Crosley autos , a 1963 MG and had built a hydro plane. All in his basement. Now my friend was a genius when it came to restoration but even tho he was a mechanical engineer he made one mistake...everthing We did he never made sure we could get our projects out of the basement. As far as I know, there still there. I enjoy your channel and hope you have a great holiday.

Mustie1. Definitely agree the old stuff was easier to repair without all the cheap plastic. I also used to get “not working stuff”, tear it apart and find out why, then fix it. Very interesting and Enjoyable! I did that one winter to a small Harley 175cc single cylinder Bobcat that was not running and rusty when given to me. I brought it into my bedroom (after draining gas, oil and fork fluid) tore it down to every nut and bolt. Cleaned everything, fixed a couple parts and replaced a couple more with 2nd hand parts. Put it back together and rode it for the next couple of years. We lived in a cinderblock home out in the woods with a bad roof (which I fixed also) so bringing into my bedroom wasn’t a big deal to the linoleum/rotted wood floor. Was a proud moment when it started on the third try!! Woohoo.

I inherited an exact copy of this mower from my father in law when he passed. I think it is much better than newer mowers with all their safety devices which cause batteries to run down and prevent starting. I have replaced the drive wheel, belts, air cleaners, blades, switches, and some other parts. Mine has a long battery next to the driveshaft and is hard to remove. I have a battery fixed to the outside of the body. This mower is more comfortable than the John Deeres.

@Dave Iaucco I was wondering whether this Snapper drive design was optimal or not. A second opinion (yours) convinced me it’s not, however the overall ruggedness of this tractor compared to all the current cookie-cutter clone MTD, Yard Machines, Bolens, Ariens, etc. mowers from 20 years back to the present day is remarkable. This Snapper is pretty close in design to those classic 1960’s mowers...

The friction wheel was popular in the 60s as well. Homelite used them. There were also very well made machines from Wheel Horse, John Deer and others that rivaled the manufacture of full size tractors.
