I finally bought a brand new road bike!! In this video I cover the 2022 Trek Emonda SL 5 Disc (size 54cm), including all the specs / details, the weight, and a test ride to compare it to my Specialized Allez. It’s not an MTB, but it is probably one of the best value road bikes from Trek, so I hope you still enjoy!

I bought the exact same bike, even the same size, about two years ago after salivating over it in the shop for several months. I loved it, but I subsequently rode another bike with electronic shifting and had to have it, so I traded my SL5 for an SL6 eTap. I do have a few comments. 1. Never chop the steerer tube! I plan to keep my bikes a long time, and I might need to move the handlebars up as I grow older. The SL5 was the first bike I ever traded in. The shop told me that the trade-in value would have been lower if I had chopped the steerer tube. To partly disguise the chimney height, I put a couple of spacers below the stem and flip it so that it slopes downward. 2. At 19.3 pounds, the Emonda is not a lightweight bike. That's okay. I worry more about above-the-saddle weight than below-the-saddle weight. 3. You need to put a set of clipless pedals on that bike! It took me a while to warm up to the idea of going clipless, but I never regretted it even though I still do occasionally unclip on the left and fall over on the right. 4. I'm glad Trek went away from their Isospeed elastomer system on the Madone. I wish they would have done the same on the Domane. My bikes live in a shed that gets hot during the summer. Elastomers tend to crumble after a few years. 5. I further wish Trek had come up with a name other than Domane+ for their road ebike. I wouldn't want to have a Domane now because my friends might think I was riding an ebike.

Congrats! New bike day is always a thrill. I got same bike in the beginning of 2022 on sale for 2800 Euro and did quite a lot of road riding this year. I got size 58. I'm 6' 3" but prefer smaller bike for better handling and the Emonda is quite long with tall seat mast so with minor adjustments I got a good fit. Its a beautiful bike - great paintjob and shape. Great for climbing. Ride quality is not as rough as I expected given I live in Sofia, Bulgaria where roads are practically non-existent. Seat is quite comfortable for me. I changed the tires with GP 5000 and the tubes with Zipp Tangente which reduced the weight drastically. Would have bought carbon wheels but you know ... bad roads makes that bad investment. I love the blendr system. I use duo base and mount my Garmin 6 as poor man's bike computer along with GoPro. I decided to go with Shimano PD-EH500 hybrid pedals. However I find myself using the platform side most of the time when riding on road. I'm now thinking of buying Roscoe 7 as replacement for my ancient trail bike. It seems I'm a sucker for Trek bikes and I find your videos informative and entertaining. I'm curious what mount and camera do you use for the road ride footage?

Hopefully there is a 70mm expander plug in there. With 15mm of spacer on top of the stem and a standard 43mm stack height stem a 50mm depth expander plug won't adequately support the steer tube where it meets the upper headset bearing.

Thank you! Yeah the cost is more insane now than it already was before. I love the look of the carbon and am excited to see how carbon feels compared to aluminum. Nice review. And thanks for the comparison between your 2 bikes. As I have several bikes & can’t justify the high costs of today’s bikes. $3k & up I was gonna ask, you said you work for Trek. So does the Madone really have a lot of issues?
@TalalipopMTB
@TalalipopMTB 11 ай бұрын
Thanks! And yeah we do see Madone’s come in often with iso speed issues and they have to be warrantied, so that’s scared off a lot of us from buying them. But we’re also a bike shop and ofcourse will see more issues than the average person. The new generation madone is different though and I can’t speak to that one

I used to work for Trek in Columbia MD, but they didn’t help me build my custom Madone SLR. I tried my best, it’s SRAM Red AXS and ENVE Foundation 65 wheels running tubes, but I couldn’t get it under 8kg’s. Probably the wheels…

That doesn’t sound normal as mine does not do that. Might want to get it checked out at your local Trek shop (should be free of charge to give it an initial check) and see if they have to warranty the frame if there’s a defect

I’m the same height as you and thought about a 54 or. 52 now I’m going for 54, the bottle cage $95😮 hope they gave you a bottle of champagne to put in it for that price 😀, bike looks great , I was thinking of the tcr advanced pro but the cables are on show , compared to this the clean lines look on the front looks way better, is there enough adjustment in the small seat post to play with or is it limited
@TalalipopMTB
@TalalipopMTB 3 ай бұрын
Hahaha! And yeah the seatpost is definitely a bit limited, it can move up an inch maybe, so sizing is important. 54 should be good though!

I got the same bike but in a 52cm. I am 5'7, so you mentioning that you feel that you aren't centered makes me think you may need to get bike fit, or you should've gone a size down. I can't tell if I made the right size choice or not, but I did get a bike fit, and I feel pretty ok in the bike. I do sometimes feel cramped as you mentioned. So, hearing you say you feel cramped in a 54 is also a little weird.

Do you find road bike braking , more difficult , or not as powerful compared to flat bars? Due to leverage ?
@TalalipopMTB
@TalalipopMTB Жыл бұрын
No not really. Hydraulic disc brakes don’t take much effort to engage so I’d say it’s about the same. Might feel different if you are used to riding one style over another though, but after you get used to it it’s fine

If I were you dude, return the bike and get your money back. Then go and purchase a Windspace SLC 2.0 Rim Brake Frame or a Trifox X-16 Rim Brake Frame. ICan or Wisnspace Hyper Wheels and it'll be at least 3 pounds lighter and better and save you at least a grand or more. Rim brakes will always be lighter than a disc brake bike.
