I really didn't like that either. At 13 you have the capacity to understand at the very least that you shouldn't do that to someone younger than you or someone you're related to. Even if they don't have a full understanding of consent, which I think they should at that age but some cases not, that person knew it was wrong to do to their nephew. They knew they were not equals and it was not just experimenting it was sexual misconduct
@jungwonfilms
@jungwonfilms Жыл бұрын
that's exactly what i was thinking, i recently just turned 14 (literally yd lol) and as a 13 year old i DEFINITELY knew what consent was + i knew that if i ever did that it would be absolutely wrong, so i found it really weird that they said "13 yr old are children and they probably don't know much abt that" but no? im pretty sure most 13 year olds do know especially with social media and everything rn- idk abt 5 years ago ig it wasn't as common for 13 yr olds to know abt these things again bcs the content 13 yr olds consumed back then was definitely different than the ones they do now, but still, i think anyone above the age of 11 would've known it was wrong

The sex offender lists for Megan's Law was specifically made to protect children and has saved many lives, and each person is usually labeled according to their 'risk or danger' toward community. We need to hold people like this far more accountable than just a list online. I believe their faces should be plastered EVERYWHERE
@olis2073
@olis2073 Жыл бұрын
While it is extremely important to protect people from sex offenders, what I think our therapist was getting at is that our justice system should be rehabilitative. It is very difficult to rehabilitate and reintroduce someone into society if everywhere they go they are subject to a system that subtlety supports vigilante justice. The example she gave of that guy getting a nude from his girlfriend being a particularly horrendous one. Obviously this is about balancing the needs and rights of the community vs the needs and rights of offenders, which can be difficult to get right. My personal bias leads me to care more about victims and protection of the community, but that lends more to a retributive justice system.

In regards to what the therapist said after the call on going public, I agree with most of her points but bringing up the fact that “you don’t know what he could’ve been through either” felt very invalidating to the victim herself. Sure there’s always mistakes in the system but I feel like that conversation shouldn’t have been brought up right after the call ended implying you’re thinking more about the abusers feelings and or circumstance you have no idea were true or not

Thank you so much for saying his name, Alex! It means so much for those who haven’t been able to receive justice or are too afraid to seek it. I had such a similar experience as the caller and it still affects me deeply years after. I didn’t recognize or wanted to admit at the time that it was SA and felt so much shame over it. I just wanted to say that I tried to find the humanity in him too- for 3yrs. He dealt with a lot of abuse growing up but in the end that did not matter anymore to me bc he continued SA me constantly and later found out he did it to other girls too and never looked for any help. So as much as you want to find humanity in someone’s actions- They. Do. Not. Care.

In June, we lost my great-grandfather. He was 89. My mom and I lived with him and my great-grandmother (Gram) for most of her life and a good chunk of mine, so I was closer to him than most people are with their great-grandparents if they ever even get to meet them. I'm still young (20), so it was my first significant loss. Unfortunately, we can tell my Gram (88) won't be far behind him as she's just getting worse and worse. She's always treated me like her own baby and she's my favorite person in the world. I truly cannot fathom how I will deal with the loss of her. However, she's lived a fulfilled, full of love and joy, life. I'd rather suffer the loss of her being gone than her suffer being here. My situation can't, nor should be, compared to yours, Alyx. Your cousin was taken way too soon. I empathize with your loss and send you all the love. To anyone else in a similar situation, I send you all the love as well. We will get through this. ❤❤

From what I understood, that perspective came purely from a treatment sort of mindset. It is entirely justified to be angry at and hate rapists and sex offenders, but that is not effective in a therapeutic or rehabilitative sense. In an ideal world there would be no rapists or SOs, but because there are, professionals have to consider what caused someone to commit those acts and how those crimes can be prevented in the future.

@@bbibbibu I think the problem here is taking a rehabilitative approach is viewed as "devil's advocate". If we want to stop rape and sexual assault then understanding why it happens and formulating treatments is EXTREMELY important. Many people, particularly Americans, get so caught up in a vengeful and punitive view of justice that nothing is actually achieved. Of course, it is perfectly reasonable to be violently angry at predators and rapists, but to leave it only at that violent anger and without an attempt at rehabilitation (at least on the part of people whos job it is to do so) is not going to better society in any way. I understand a visceral reaction, but we must be understanding to those who take a rehabilitative approach towards rapists because they are actively trying to better society.

I doubt she meant the act itself wasn’t something they ‘chose’ to do - but rather what was behind that choice. Things like addictions and compulsions take away a lot of a persons actual autonomy. A therapist is not and should not be concerned with judgment and retribution, even when most people would agree it is deserved. It is her job to look behind people’s actions at the cause and how they might be treated. Clearly you disagree, but I believe she was right in saying that people cannot always control their actions - that is why her job as a therapist and mental health in general is so important.

i think they knew what they were doing. like why mention that the kid blackmailed u? ofcourse he did, you sa’d him. at 13 you definitely know what consent means
@sullensleaze
@sullensleaze Жыл бұрын
i really disagree with saying the 13 year old "didnt know what he was doing", im glad they feels remorse but we can acknowledge what happened and the awareness of it whilst acknowledging that they are now feeling the guilt for it. But what happened, happened, no matter what age rape is rape. I don't like the excusing of it because of ones age. I know people who were SA'ed by their younger family members, age means nothing. what they did to their nephew was horrific and damaging. Imagine you are the nephew and you are just now remembering and realizing that you were SA'd by your uncle/aunt. You most likely had repressed that memory and dealt with the outcomes of it without realizing it. You finally regain knowledge of the insident, most likely dealing with the denial of it. But you feel that in your gut something is wrong, you build up the courage to ask your uncle/aunt, and they deny. But also imagine being a victim of child on child SA and watching this video and seeing two adults finding ways to excuse and sympathize with your rapist, you may feel influenced to think the same. "well he was a kid too" "they were both children tho" "atleast he feels guilt". All of those phrases and phrases similar are so damaging to victims of Rape, especially when they were children during the SA. Instead of giving the Rapist reasons why them SA their nephew can be excused, focus more on how it affected the 9 year old kids who had been molested by their 4 years older uncle/aunt.

i definitely knew what consent was at 13. if that happened to me, (i sat on little kids lap [which why would i??] and got aroused) i would immediately get up and feel shameful. i would remove myself from the situation. you definitely feel the age difference when you’re 13 around a 9 year old. “i didn’t know” isn’t a very good excuse. i definitely feel bad for the little kid.

When my mum told me my nan died I laughed very hard, she was the closest person to me in my life and of course I was devastated (I was 9 at the time) now I’m 20 and I’m worried that if I was told someone else died I would react the same way 😭 one of my biggest fears

I can speak on the morbid curiosity!! I am 1000% morbidly curious. Anything and everything- I’ll watch it. I am very death positive as I’ve worked with end of life care for years. And what I’ve found is that this country in particular is verrrrrry scared of death and try to make it something it’s not. Not to take away from trauma. But I think as a whole we need to get back to honoring death. Just because you watch or are curious, doesn’t mean you have negative motives. I am all about living life to the fullest!! But we need to become comfortable with the inevitable.

The whole people being attracted to their parent is thought in physiology. I took a college course for my major, and we indeed learned about it and how that's a stage of development that naturally occurs. Children MAY want to get ride of the one of the parents bc the want to try it with the other parent.....
