I found your channel just last week, I subscribe and hit like, now I'm addicted to your channel lol, gorgeous garden, I could only dream of, and you are awesome host, you give us the name and details on the plant, but most of all those beautiful music with no lyrics from the birds ang bees super inspiring. Watching from Illinois USA. Cold and thick snow at the moment.

I planted an English lavender in a corner of a raised bed garden thinking it would spill over and look beautiful in bloom. I only dead headed the spent blooms and let it get big and round. The problem was that I also planted a Bobo hydrangea next to it because I loved the two together... well 5 years later and the hydrangea got swallowed by the lavender and I don't want to get it out and make a hole in my lavender bush! 😂
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 4 жыл бұрын
Bite the bullet - grow on another lavander and pop it in the gap - after a year no one will see the join - that gap I've got with a new small plant will hopefully blend in next year. That's the theory anyway. 😎

Paul T's World yes, it mostly consists of small shrubs I have planted over the past 2 years so I will have to wait a while before it’s anything like yours. Your comment about thinking 10 years ahead is true. I keep trying to fit more in than I need.

@@mywalledgarden I suppose the best plan is to plant the big shrubs with the "10 year plan" and then plant annuals in between so it doesn't look too bare in the meantime.

So beautiful. Love the way you make constant reference to the birds and the light which in my opinion enhance the enjoyment of a garden so much. I live in the very south of Ireland and have acid soil so my favourite months are March and April when my Camellias, magnolias and Rhododendron are in flower. Also lots of bluebells which I love 😊

I’ve grown fuchsias forever but only in pots. I think I’m a mite embarrassed to say I guess I’ve never seen a fuchsia shrub in 25 years of gardening - in 3 zones. Speaking of which, Mr. T. If you see this - which zone are you in?

Hi Molly Wolly, I am at zone 9 on the US hardiness system. Most of England is zone 8 but as I'm right on the West Coast near the sea I'm zone 9. If you want to see big-time fuchsia shrubs, Ireland is the place. Check out my Dingle Ireland video at O:46 and you'll see how the Irish use fuchsia as a hedging plant along country roads - they go for miles. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qZ2feNBmusjFk4k.html

Mr T, I've just turned green with envy! Actually, I'm greener than your beautiful hedge ;-) By the way, due to the current situation, the city authorities seem to have delayed the regular cutting (slaughtering) of the grass in my neighbourhood. I have discovered lots of lovely wild flowers in the new meadows today. It is incredible how quickly nature can reclaim the previously human-controlled territory.

Yes it looks amazing the ornamental horse chestnuts are as nice in flower I think as the hawthorns but more unusual looking flowers. Apparently they are quite good for pollinators too. Hopefully I will be able to keep the tree relatively small to medium size through pruning as it can grow massive eventually!

Good afternoon Paul, What a super large front garden you have. I love the wedding cake tree . My hubby and I were looking to buy one but at £159 we could not justify spending that sort of money on a garden that we don't intend on staying.
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Joanna, wow £159! There must already have been a few tiers for that price, mine was very small when I bought it - can't remember the exact price but I wouldn't pay more than £30 for any plant - I know that plants have got expensive this last few years. I buy the smallest, cheapest plants I can find - they tend to 'take' more quickly and can often 'overtake' larger plants that have been in pots longer. I hope your garden is coming along nicely.

Thank you Victoria, welcome to my channel. I'm really pleased you enjoyed my garden and particularly the blackbird. He's the one at the front, "my" other blackbird is in the back garden and his song is a bit louder - I featured his singing when he was ensconced in the holly tree. I'm on the North-West coast of England and am in Zone 9 of the US plant hardiness zone system. Winter temperatures are normally around 3C/37f to 10C/50f and every now and then a light frost and maybe once or twice a year down to minus 4C/25f or so.

@paultsworld

Hi Colleen, 14 years - but some of the shrubs such as the large rhododendrons and trees were already here. The lavender hedge looked good just a year or two after I planted it and the azaleas flower the very next year, so some plants perform very quickly. How is the renovation going? Hopefully your lilac and other new plants are busy establishing themselves?

Paul T's World I use Grow Fast liquid fertiliser, I pour some into my pressure sprayer mixed with water and spray all my plants’ foliage. Make sure to do it very early in the morning or late in the evening, there’s a risk you might burn the leaves if it’s full sun.

I absolutely love your “trial and error” approach to gardening, and in particular your ability to literally laugh at “errors” you’ve made which can induce palpitations in other types of gardeners. If we can’t laugh in our garden, what’s the point? So! To your Golden Showers - beautiful! I have one that looks nothing at all like yours for way too many reasons to enumerate, but I am curious (yellow) - I’ve dated myself - how do you have it affixed to your wall? Or do you? It looks vaguely espaliered but that could be just your (wise) horizontal training. I know of gardeners who suspend climbers from eaves with fishing wire, etc...is there a trellis there that I simply can’t see?
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the compliment - you've made me laugh with the palpitations remark! I have horizontal wires about two feet or so apart, attached to the wall with rawl plugs and screws. I attach the branches to the wire with string. If you look at frame 22:24 on the video you can just make out the three wires. Hope that helps. (actually at 22:42 there's a clearer view of them.) By the way I saw your fuchsia comment and have replied on the other thread.

Oh, thanks loads! Now I can move my GS to a better spot, conquer the black spot and I’ll use your method of support. I also learned down thread that you’re in zone 9. Jeepers!! No wonder you’ve so many more blooms than I do (6a here). Did a couple of years in zone 10 (palm beach FL) which is another story for another day. Not much fun but I did stubbornly try tulips 3 years in a row to no avail - so I moved. 🙄🙄🙄🙄 And I realized downthread

@@paultsworld Another reason I'm so incredibly drawn to your garden is because it appears that you share my devotion to/perhaps obsession with(?) fragrance. I've never seen so many mock oranges in one garden (and don't you have a couple of varieties of philadelphus?) as well as, of course, your MANY lilacs and fragrant roses. Many plant devotees I know will tolerate one or two lilacs since they are, admittedly, not the prettiest of plants, and they do sort of just sit there, hulking, for the 5 warm months that they're not in bloom. And then they drop their leaves. BUT...a huge bouquet of lilacs on a bedside table is the stuff of fantasy, to me. I've worked in the fragrance industry forever and so of course plot literally everything I plant along those lines; I would rarely insert an unscented plant into a spot if a scented one is available and meets those environmental conditions. Which has resulted in many, many peonies, roses, lilacs, summersweet, mock orange, and DAPHNE!!! (do you know daphne odorosa? You must try to sniff it sometime!) - and I even have a decent-sized bed of narcissus that can be smelled from 2 blocks away. Or so I like to think. Nice to meet a kindred spirit, of sorts!
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 4 жыл бұрын
@@mollywolly4201 One of my philadelphus plants is right on the pathway to the house. It's wonderful to walk past and without even thinking, take in the fragrance. I like to get in the habit of stopping at each of the two climbing roses by the front door and having a good sniff. Somehow the world is a better place after taking in the fragrance. Now, would you believe I've never had a daphne? - I don't know why but I'd better put that to rights now you've mentioned daphne odorosa. I've just googled it and read up about it. I've visited Grasse, France a few times - have you been? I'm sure you'd love the Musée International de la Parfumerie.
