I am so enjoying your videos Paul and am learning how to manage my own garden here in Northern Ireland. It is such a privilege to relax and watch and listen as you take us around the garden with you. You have a nice voice and move smoothly and gently so we can have time to see properly...and I don't get sick from swinging camera! The birdsong is a great bonus and that wee wren was so lovely. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely garden with us.

I hear you Paul.I too prefer 20 degrees.I often tell people I am not built for heat or speed.As gardeners, we can be more productive in more moderate temps.We are basking in glorious frosts and some very cold days.I am using the time to build up the soil and plan my planting for spring.Always something that can be done.Its a full time job keeping the birds fed.Most days its a running buffet for 100 birds if not more.Im enjoying their company and colour among the dormant sticks and dullness of winter.Please keep well and thankyou again for sharing your beautiful garden.

@paultsworld
@paultsworld 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Rita. The plants I have along that road bed are eleagnus (a large shrub) a privet hedge, hawthorn tree, viburnum tinus (evergreen large shrub). All these shrubs help to filter the air, reduce pollution getting to the garden and make the garden more private. Any vegetation will help. So the best would be large, thick evergreen shrubs. Also small trees where their leaves trap the pollution and then when it rains the pollution sinks to the ground. Vegetation also helps reduce traffic noise. Hope that helps.

Hi Janos, I'm really pleased you've found my channel! The garden is quite old and used to be part of an orchard 100 years ago so it has slowly evolved, with the previous owner putting in a lot of lovely shrubs 20 years ago. I have dug a number of new beds next to the pathway alongside the garage - plus putting in a few trees and shrubs. So much of what you see is about 10 to 15 years ago. I suppose it looks a lot but most of the shrubs are very low maintenance and only need cutting back each year or indeed being simply left alone - one person can deal with a garden this size fairly easily. Difficult to say how much work is done but generally half a day or a couple of hours 2 or 3 times a week. All my learning is done by reading books and more recently the Internet, but most often just seeing what the plants are saying - they tell you if everything is fine or if something is not right and needs changing - the trick is finding out what needs changing!

8.18 The word clematis is greek, it comes from the word klima (κλημα) which means vine and clematis in greek we would stress the last syllable if we pronounced it and it would be κληματις with a little vertical line over the ις but my tablet doesn't have that.

Hi Rafael, thank you for being a subscriber to my channel. Yes, I do prune it but only enough to shape it a little, I don't think they like hard pruning - I shall be pruning back the one in this video - about a foot or so to keep it bushy. I'll do it as soon as the flowers are over and the bees have moved on to other plants.

Why did you top off your eucalyptus tree? I’m in usda 9b which is subtropical. I have a rainbow eucalyptus that is about 5 years old. It’s about 20’ now. I recently learned the roots are really shallow making it a risk for high winds or hurricanes. Maybe topping off is a solution?
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 4 жыл бұрын
I want it to 'bush up' lower down. There aren't any leaves lower down where I want them so topping is the solution for me. Yes, being shallow rooted could be a problem later on if you get high winds.

@paultsworld
@paultsworld 3 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean - however I just leave them...although after flowering would be a good time to prune the shrub, so that effectively gets rid of the spent blooms.

You are correct - we generally don't have much in the way of frost, especially as I'm close to the coast. The zone is 9a. Our mid Summer temperatures are around 20 - 25C (68 - 77f) although it was 31c/88f yesterday - which is super hot for us!

I have just started to grow some plants myself and everyone keeps telling me i have a green thumb lol( proud of that😂) but im still new lol -my other question i have an azelea tree that i got as a gift for valentines day- it was blooming when i got it- after it bloomed i read that u have to pinch the blooms off- and now its all green n healthy, can u please teach me a few things about it? Does it only blooms once? Must also add i had it indoors but now transplanted outside in a pot - its doing good- the pink blooms looked just like urs- so maybe u can help me sharing a few secrets - thank u and look forward to hearing from you- 😀🌱 flowers 💐 🌺 🌸 🌹 🎋🌾🍁🍀☘️🌿🌲🌳🌴🌵🎄🥀🌼🌻

Yes, the azaleas only bloom once. I actually do not pinch the dead blooms off - they will drop off later by themselves. Some people pinch off dead rhododendron blooms but I don't. The azaleas have so many blooms it would take a long time - however if you want to then they will look nice and green again a bit quicker. I too had an indoor azalea and then I planted it out - it also is doing well. The big shrubs take many years to mature but the smaller ones will look really nice very quickly and slowly over the years grow larger. Well done for "having a green thumb" I'm sure your plants are growing well. All the best Paul

I have a hedge at the back of my garden and want to remove the patio and put a bed there but always wondered about being able to trim the hedge once everything’s grown in. Do you have much trouble?
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, make sure there is a gap big enough for you to walk along the hedge and cut it. I make sure the shrubs are kept back so I can walk between them and the hedge - it works well and is easy to do. Just don't plant too close to the hedge so the shrubs have room to grow.

Dear Paul, in this video you show an Amelanchier...and i actually have a question about that one- aside from the fact it is one of my favourite small trees, and we got a young one this year. however i know and noticed the Amelanchier having alot of troubles with Mildew...do you happen to know a cure for that? Thanks in advance!
@paultsworld
@paultsworld Жыл бұрын
Yes, I planted the amelanchier in the front garden a number of years ago. So sorry your tree has mildew - I have seen some mildew on a couple of the perennial plants but not on any of the trees. I think it is caused by a damp, dark atmosphere with a lack of circulation, although the perennial I had a problem with us in good sun. Try and cut off leaves that are badly affected - don’t put them in the compost bin. Is it in a place with some sun where a bit of wind can reach it?
@Zeheroth69
@Zeheroth69 Жыл бұрын
@@paultsworld yeah it is actually..not too much wind though but it catches the full morning sun and midday till about 4ish i think. I did have heared about sulfurspray that supposedly should help to prevent majority growth of mildew but i havent got experience with it

Yes Cristina, I do cut back the lavender each year - first I cut off all the flower spikes when they are finished - there is a chance it will put up some more flowers. Then in early Autumn I cut it back - it's best to cut back as far as possible but not into any old wood. Hope that helps.
