Hi! Thanks for joining me. My name is Norm Jurgen and I'd like to share my Lionel Train Set measuring 18 ft x 16 ft and taking 3 years to complete. The layout features 4 TMMC locomotives that can operate simultaneously. There are several scenes of interest including an animated Fruit Factory, an Antique Car Show, 2 Wedding Scenes, Trick or Treaters, Santa's Village, a Trailer Home complete with Hobby Farm, a BBQ, Outdoor Performers and Pumpkin Patch, a Tribute to Drumheller, a Cave Pool Scene, Stella's Diner, a Medieval Town, a Zombie Outbreak, a Tribute to small towns across Canada and the U.S.A., Rolling Hills with Static Grass and a Boardwalk with Buskers and Friends. I hope you enjoy my layout and it inspires you on the development of your own!

You are most welcome. Just one comment. A large layout like mine is difficult to maintain as access to the areas in the center are hard to reach. Cleaning track in the middle and dealing with derailments has its challenges. While my space didn't allow for it I see a lot of benefit with a dog bone design. Whatever you come up with make sure you can reach all the track easily. Cheers and thank you.

Thank you. Over the years I started many layouts but never managed to finish any. For this layout I was determined to finish it and do it well! With guidance from my friend Owen who worked for VIA rail I managed to position buildings and industries in a manner that made sense. My wife Stella inspired me to never give up even when things weren't working and pushed me to add track features I hadn't imagine. With a little help from my son Kurt I finally added the trestle bridges and his 3-D printed support structures. And my friend Noel who constructed this massive table to hold my weight. My own creativity and ability to think multi-dimensional added the rest. I am so glad you like it!!

I have watched several of your videos now. Great work, great layout! I like the variety of passenger stations on the layout, personally, I like the look of the Atlas one the most. Your rock cliffs, ledges and smaller rocks look very good. For the rocky ledges and cliffs you used foam, then covered with plaster cloth, and then painted? For the medium sized rocks and boulders did you use rock molds? I have never used Woodland Scenics scenery paints but it looks like the realism look turns out well on rocks..
@17designs
@17designs 3 жыл бұрын
For the rock cliffs I created the shapes with crumpled tracing paper. Woodland Scenic molds were made with Hydrocal and placed on top of the tracing paper wherever the molds would fit. I often re-used molds rotating them 90 or 180 degrees. Plaster cloth held the molds in place. I then filled all the plaster cloth holes with plaster from a hardware store. For painting I took Woodland Scenic White and added a little dab of Black. Mixed, and painted everything light grey. The creativity happens when using a foam brush and applying watered down pigments of ochre, yellow, etc. Finally, I would give the whole area a Black wash. This added shadowing. Hope this helps.

@@17designs Yes, thanks. You are lucky to have Stella. Supportive and helpful with the videos. I have looked at many O scale layouts on KZfaq and yours has to be one of the best. Wish I were close enough for you to invite me to see it in person. But, I think we are probably at least 1,000 miles apart. Stay cool and keep up your great hobby work..

Wow thanks for posting this is helping with ideas for my layout. Also for including tips on construction. I never had a train set and my adult children bought me pieces of a used O27 Lionel gauge set in December at Christmas. I started using Lionel fast track but am disappointed with the 6 switches I installed. I found 4 of them out of 6 with bad wiring connection solder joints. I repaired. Are you still having problems with your switches? I have not even started on scenery, just laid the new track. May need to go with different track.
@17designs
@17designs 4 жыл бұрын
I am glad I could help. I quite like the FasTrack and have used the same track for this layout and a previous one from 12 years ago. Most of my switches are O72 and I've only replaced 2. The O60s are a bit more problematic and I've replaced 3 or 4. The layout has 37 switches in total. If I go back 30 years (I'm dating myself( to when I modelled in N-Scale even the Atlas switches I used had their issues. They're moving parts so problems are to be expected. Don't let it frustrate you.

Hello Norm I love your layout. I've been following you since the beginning. I would like to make a similar layout for myself. Did you use RR Tracks to design your layout? I really don't remember if you had.
@17designs
@17designs 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, I am so happy to hear that. Yes, I used RR Tracks and its quite helpful for flat layouts. In my case, due to many elevation changes the RR Track layout had to go through on the fly design changes. This resulted in skewing the track, adding unexpected 3/8" tracks, abandoning a railway crossing, swapping out 10" straights for combos of 5" and 4.5", or changing ideas entirely. As you can imagine there was some wood loss. The final layout differs from the RR Track design and I have not been able to resolve the two. This will be my next task as I'd like to get the layout published in the Classic Toy Trains magazine.

@@17designsCan you recommend a software I can use for a multilayer track layout or do I have to go by trial and error?
@17designs
@17designs 4 жыл бұрын
@@kevinjohnson7468 Hi Kevin, RR Track software will give you a strong foundation and tell you overall how much track you need to buy. Once you start building allow for fixes using small straight tracks: 1.375", 1.75", 4.5" and 5". Substitute where needed. The same may apply with small curves. I laid out the outer edge of my layout first to see if it would fit my 18 ft x 16 ft table. It didn't and I had to make adjustments from the very beginning. You may have a few sleepless nights but don't give up! Remember my layout took me 3 years to complete.
