MODERN BUILDS
Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I'm a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I've focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further.

If you ever do more drywall install work but don’t want to buy a drywall screw gun (because they can be pricey). I highly recommend getting a drywall screw setter bit. They are incredibly useful. They have a magnetic to hold the screw on the bit and a spring so when you go a certain depth it “pops” to stop the screw from going deeper.

A great technique that knocks out the drywall skim coat faster and more consistently would be to use a paint roller. Thin your mud down and use a thick nap roller. Roll the mud on like paint and use a taping knife to smooth everything out :) Wonderful for beginners, especially! Also always helps to seal the exposed paper with a primer like a can of B-I-N to prevent blistering. Great job, Mike! Love what you do.

You should prime the the walls where the paper has come off and also add a small amount of water to your bucket and use a drill with a paddle bit to mix it well. Your arms will thank you for that and it will be easier to float those walls

When skimming full walls, I roll the drywall mud on with a paint roller then go back over it with ur biggest drywall knife, saves a lot of time from having to apply the mud with a knife. And u get a more even coat of mud using a roller.. love ur videos

Hey Mike, I'm told you have to prime drywall areas where the paper has torn off otherwise the joint compound bubbles up in those spots....keep us posted on how your method works.

There's actually a drywall screw attachment you can get for a regular drill. It's cheap and works pretty well if you're only doing a little. If you're putting up a lot it's better to just get the screwgun.

You don't need a drywall screw gun. Only if you're a professional 8 hour a day 270 days a year drywaller do you need a drywall screw gun. I'm sure other commenters have suggested that all you need are drywall screw tips for your regular drill or impact driver. That's what I use and they work great. Dewalt and Bosch make some, as I'm sure they're are others.

not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, and it's hard to tell just how "lumpy" the texture still is. But, i have seen people water down their mud a little and use a paint roller to roll on a skim coat then come back with a wide trowel and smooth it down.

don't get a gun just for dry wall screws unless you are planning on taking up drywall full time, they sell drywall screw bits for impact/drill. any time you have a new bucket of mud it doesn't hurt to mix in a cup or two of water and mix it with a paddle mixer it will soften the mud up so its easier on your wrists and smoother finish

@@ModernBuilds best practice is to dial in the clutch on the drill. This makes the dimpler much more effective. I think on the ryobi I use it's like 18 on the clutch. Hope it works well for you! Love the new flip series!

The author does like to from scratch, kzfaq.infoUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.
