We have a 1946 Willis in our family that was purchased new. It was Navy Surplus and was delivered still in a wooden crate way back then when it was purchased by my grandmother and great aunt. At one point my great aunt drove it from Vermont where it was delivered to South Carolina. I have no idea how long it took at it's top speed of 35 to 40mph but I'll bet it was an adventure. We have some, very similar in price and brightness and also bought ours on ebay a few years back, we have them for security lights, best part is they cost about 1/4 of the older lights they replaced.. I love led lights, every light in our house is now led and we have seen huge saving in our electric bill and they last so much longer.. I very much loved this episode.. This should show people to trust and use the new technologies.. I always like to see the kiddo's having fun.. Also since they use so much less power and are also brighter, you could have added a couple more and still save money on running them... Keep us updated on how power consumption is and how much you saved using them... Have a blessed day..

Take a look at using some acrylic sheet as a diffuser, it is very inexpensive, it would soften and spread the light and avoid that hot spot of light.

Nice part is since the led lights have such a lower draw you could actually add more than just 4 lights on the tower and be just fine.

Always happy to an improvement. If time took its toll on the transformers it might do the same with the other components. I would have replaced the breakers and the wires also. Then it be in the category of "fix it and forget it". There will other things in other places that will gone bad soon enough. If you added 2 more lights they could cover the ends, then you'd have 360 degree coverage.

Make sure that the LED units on the bottom of the bar are rated to work UPSIDE DOWN. Many units that I have installed were only rated to be used with the power supply/driver unit on the bottom, something about proper cooling. They will work for a while, but they will fail prematurely. GREAT JOB, and good luck!

I changed my shop lights over to led. Big difference. I been switching them as the ballast go out.

Use one phase of the 220 for the receptacle and one phase for the lights and tie in the neutral and ground to everything and you should have 110 to each circuit for balanced loading and then you should be done. You probably should have used all of the home run wires that went down the stack and made the splices in the con box for resistance minimization (though not a really big deal)

According to the specs on old and new lights, you went from 350,000 lumen (maybe 174k ish if the bulbs were super old) @ 87.5 lumen per watt down to 144,000 lumen @ 120 lumen per watt. MH may be old tech, but they were still really efficient when the bulbs are new. Over twice as efficient as what we think of as normal old school bulbs even when they're at EOL and way passed replacement time.

About 15 years ago I replace my175 watt MH lights with what was around 30 watt LED heads. The brightness was improved but the real difference is the LED was a much whiter light. Plus a lot less power to do it. There is probably improvements in LED since then. But you can't go wrong with LED. Never had a problem with them except bugs and dirt on the glass. Same with any fixture.

Most of the LED light systems go back quite a few years and thanks to the pot growers, we now have LED lights that shine more than just a few inches. That was the biggest obstacle getting light to travel further and then they made the breakthrough and its a good day and so much cheaper. Been there with a card that has money I haven't spent and see the master cylinder, and maybe wheel cylinders ... fluid you get local but the new this and that so the switch turns and it just works ... its hard to stop when its a necessary part and you are in to it armpit deep. By the way since you can get the LED lights in a multitude of colors, I would go with a orange or yellow light panel in between the existing lights up on the pole to make it easier on the eyes and increase happy moods. Lights can affect peoples feelings or tempers. I might sound crazy but that is because I just might be crazy. I know that its money season right now so worry about the truck or other later. and I am curious as to how much power that plant is putting out. Maybe it got hot when one ballast died. Too much power and no where to go. Damn mice might of got into that panel or someplace that caused it to short out.

Very nice. I had the power company install a 280 spotlight on my farm... just that light does a great job. I can imagine 4 lights. I'll install later in the fall more lights on our new 10k sq ft garden area. TY the video confirms, it will do whats needed.

DP, the lights you are using the Metal Halide Bulbs, are what are used for Growing som Magic Herb. Even the LED lights can be used for Grow Lights.

looks great. you might want to drop the revs on the motor as you wont have near the same load. i would also mount a 5,6 light on small t coming out between the lights. you have power capacity and circuits to switch off of needed, but it would fill the 22 shadows for the track but still be towable. you could mount 4 extra for fun overkill, but i think 2 will work for the whole track.

nice upgrade Mike. those ancient HIDs suck. bulb breaks off at the base or the screw base gets corroded in the socket cant get the sonuvab-tch out , the transforners weight a ton get temperamental. Im trying to get our property to ditch the ancient farm house gooseneck style HID fixtures for those exact LEDs you using

Looks great and with the lower power requirements.. you could even add more lights to the tower... maybe going in the other two directions to lose that shadow... I bet that generator is now severe overkill for this job... those Metal Halide lights took some serious amperage/wattage... these probably take less than a household incandescent bulb...

You can hook 100v to 260v to the led lights, so that is 5amps max so you should be able to have like 5 or 6 with that gennerator easy,, the caps on the halid system is for starting they are cheap. They blow and stop the flow of electricity

Actually that Jeep is a military M38A1. The first year of production is up for discussion. It has the port hole for the radio on the right side and l think it has a lid on the right side cowl. It was originally a 24 volt. If l could see some detailed pictures I could tell you more.

That;s a cool upgrade to the scat track! And when you ain't racing, you can point them all straight into the sky at night and f*ck with airplanes too! lol.

bright lights mister - good show -

I know you said it hardly gets moved or hauled around but just a little heads up. Adding those heavier lights on the back and removing the quite heavy ballasts from the front will cause a issue with tongue weight and possible fish tailing while hauling down the road. I had that issue when i converted all of my sheriffs offices nearly identical light towers to led's. They almost got into a wreck because of it so i ended up mounting a good sized barbell weight behind the panel where the ballasts were to solve the issue.

Myself, I would put 1 light ad the plug on one breaker, then the other lights on the other. Then you have a low set up, then the light the show!

Hey DP let us know how the LEDs stand up to the weather and the vibration of taking it to and back from work sites. If you have to replace a panel, dig into the old one and see if it could be made more vibration resistant. Thanks!
