During 5 months, I measured the water content of three C&D tobacco tins with three different seals (A Silicon Disc, B Saran Food Wrap, C Kilner insert lid) under the plastic lid. Here’s the results and Happy IPSD my’ol mates too 😄😉

Hello from Canada! I have to tell you that I benefited greatly from your pipe filter analysis! As I mentioned in the comments section on that video, I purchased two Irish Seconds (Sherlock rejects), where 9mm Peterson filters are too big to fit without the application of signficant elbow grease! Well, based on your research, I purchased three boxes of Vauen Dr. Pearl filters and they fit like a glove!!! So to anyone else who purchased Irish Seconds (specifically Sherlock pipes) and you are having issues with filter, Vauen Dr. Pearls are the solution!!! Thanks again Lester, and Happy IPSD to you and all your subscribers! (...and pipe smoking lurkers too!)

My dear Lester, since you are a scientist 🧑‍🔬 with a Ph.D. we expect nothing less than a data driven analysis that may actually help store tobacco longer than the original seal, or once the seal was open, or for the medium term after opening etc. My simple advice is open as many tins as you want until you have a nice rotation. Then jar everything and alternate things regularly until you finish your opened tins. Then repeat 😮😅 If this fails, then write our dear friend Janez for advice. 😂 Happy IPSD and hope you and La signora are well. Cheers my dears 🥂🙏

You’re right my dear Michael 😊👍👍 Combinations are even better…someone suggested using teflon or parafilm outside on the plastic lid…but yes…you could a silicon seal with Saranwrap….if its fits….maybe 0.3 mm silicon sheets are better for that than 0.5 mm that I used 🤔 I hoped C&D will offer a special lid on SP.com with a silicon seal for a few $…then everyone has a easy solution. Lets see if they react…My friend have a happy and smokey IPSD as well 😉💨💨💨

What a useful & helpful experiment ! I too have a few C&D tins in my rotation but smoke them sparingly due to the customs costs, and like you, I like to keep them in the original tins to see the artwork. What I do is wrap the whole tin in cling film, and then put that in a ziplock bag. This seems to keep it from drying out for about a year. I’m going to try your brilliant idea of the Kilner jar lids in addition to my usual practice-might get it to last years that way. Best wishes Pete

Brilliant stuff and insights Lester! It’s almost like you had some idea what you were doing?!?! 😂 I’ve used - with pretty good success - some press-and-seal plastic wrap on glass jars without a sealing ring and some tins. The press-and-seal has some adhesive on one side that creates a nice seal. Not sure of the long-term success, but worked pretty well in a pinch! Thanks for putting in the effort to investigate this! Cheers to you mate!

Thank you your quick response. When I get. A new tin, I take a picture of it print it out and attach it to the small Mason Jar. That 😮way I can preserve the tin. It I open a tin it seems time gets away from me and 6 monts to a year can creep up on me☹️ But anyhow I don’t have to worry about the date.

Mr. Redcoat, why don’t you just jar the tobacco in a Mason Jar, that is used for food storage?. Thank you again for another great enjoyable video.
@RedcoatsReturn
@RedcoatsReturn 5 ай бұрын
Bob my’ol mate😊…I do that for long storage over years…my target was to find a medium storage for under a year…using the original tins…I put them in my smoking rotation…if I smoke the in 6 months it saves a bulky Mason jar…here in Switzerland…they are cost twice the price in US…However I use this method for only my rotation…maybe 6-10 tins of different tobaccos 😉💨💨💨

The patience of time: Good job on this one. Your effort is both interesting and informative. But the age old question: Can tobacco be too dry or two wet, and how does all of that affect taste. I don't know the best answer to that. I tend to prefer my tobacco more dry that moist. Each to his own. Keep on keeping on!
@RedcoatsReturn
@RedcoatsReturn 5 ай бұрын
Yes, absolutely my‘ol mat Chuck 😊👍👍 Its a personal choice to smoke dry or wet or medium…no right or wrong…each to its own….you‘re right. For me…it depends on the tobacco….Intend to the higher moisture for aromatics…but…lower moisture for EBs. However…each tobacco is an experiment….sometimes I dry aromatic a bit more…like Brigadier Black‘s Waterloo. The pipe has an influence too…for me….experiments are fun….to find the sweet spot…for...repeatable….pleasant smokes😄😉💨💨💨💨

Loved this research Lester, very interesting. I would like to know if the factory tabaccos got preservatives on it? There is any sort of test I can do, such some drop of chemicals that change the colour in presence of silica. I presume is silicate that preserve food , I'm probably wrong. I'm saying that because I planted tobacco and I pressed , the tins which I haven't vacuum depressurised end up growing mould. Same conclusion came from a tabacco farmer in BRAZIL who clam his baccy has no preservatives, he said he can't make plugs or flakes for same reason. I tried one of his blends and was very green pure however not nice like European and American blends.

Thanks Giulliano 😊👍👍 Well…nicotine helps to preserve tobacco…mostly for insects. All crops around the World usually use crop protection for fungus, insects and unwished weeds. When I jar my tobacco…I use boiling water…10 minutes…to sterilise the jar and the lid…I wash my hands…and jar it up quickly. As the jars cool…a partial vacuum is created. I have never had mould on my tobacco. Using chemicals is not a good idea…when heated…those chemicals can be toxic. Silica gel…absorbs water vapour….its not a fungicide. The trick for flavour in tobacco…like meat…a bit of ageing…and…avoiding mould. Even the professionals have the same challenge…a few years ago C&D had a problem with mould. The spores are in everyplace…you have to work clean…especially putting the tobacco in tins and jars. Some factories used UV light to suppress bacteria and mould…but boiling water works for me. I hope this some help Giuliano…though I‘m not an expert 😉💨💨💨

Hello Lester my friend interesting video y will try option number B and its so cheap.What do tou think about a mix between A and B??Thank you very good work and we need that tip.😂😂😂
@RedcoatsReturn
@RedcoatsReturn 5 ай бұрын
Thanks Jose my’ol mate 😊👍👍 Yes…there could be combinations…even better to seal the tins….but the plastic lid needs space to clip well on the tin…I think today I would 0.3mm sheet of silicon to make the disc…but its a compromise…to make a reusable disc…if its too thin…it could wear a hole. Another combination…is to use one of A, B or C…and seal the plastic lip outside with parafilm or teflon tape. Again…this takes more time…and…you cannot use usually the tape or parafilm again. I was looking for a inexpensive, simple, reusable seal under the plastic lid. I will use solution B and C…and gain more experience with them. Happy and a smokey IPSD to you Jose my friend 😊😉💨💨💨
