"Shotgun" was their biggest hit. It was written by Junior Walker & produced by Berry Gordy Jr. "Shotgun" was Walker's debut as a vocalist because the singer who was hired to record it didn't show up. So Walker stood in.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but both "Shotgun" (1965) and "What Does It Take to Win Your Love" (1969) peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. But "What Does It Take to Win Your Love" remained in the Top Ten a few weeks longer than did "Shotgun," and I think by overall record sales, "What Does It Take to Win Your Love" was actually a bigger hit. Both were great, and "Shotgun" is a landmark hit that certainly put Junior Walker and the All-Stars on the map.

That dance is the jerk. "Do the jerk now." Then the girls are doing the jerk and digging potatoes. They're following the directions of the song.

OK son, you just stepped into the 60s, this a mixed crowd gettin' down together, in spite of social problems, this was a much better time in America, but the Vietnam War and Watergate tore the country apart and it's never been the same. This was a huge hit.

I was 10 years old in 1965. This was my favorite song at the moment (there was so much coming up) I had 10 brothers and sisters and I would be putting this 45 on and dancing by myself in the living room. Do the jerk baby! 😅

I was also 10 in 1965 and my babysitter would invite all her friends in after my mom left and all the girls would be playing this LOUD and dancing all over the living room and I was made to stay out of the way. But I was only 10, but my little sister and I would be watching and dancing to it in our room. I'm 68 now and that Sax still gets me up and moving....

There are two Motown hits that are guaranteed to make you want to get off your seat and get movin' on the dance floor: "Shotgun" by Jr. Walker and the All Stars, and probably my favorite Motown hit of all time, "Dancing In the Street" by Martha and the Vandellas.

*Some Soul Music History:* This tune by Jr. Walker and his Allstars was a huge hit reaching number 1 for 4 weeks. It came out at a time when a lot of pop tunes were calling to the latest dance crazes of the day -- (i.e. The Twist, The Jerk, The Monkey, etc.). The airplay radio censors -- who *WOULD* have vetoed the release had they known -- perhaps thought that "Shotgun" was a dance too. It was actually about police brutality, especially the race riots and deadly violence in Watts California that year. The fact that it rose to such a hit is one of the greatest protest song pull-offs of all time. Listen very, very carefully to the lyrics. *Wonderful. Powerful. Subversive. Sublime.*

I'll beg to differ with you about popular music. Popular music *IS* the soundtrack to the lives of the people who grew up listening to it. Consider: In 1965 when Jr. Walker and the All-Stars had "Shotgun" on the Top 40 charts, the week it entered the Top 10 at #10, and shared the top ten with these other 9 hits: #1-"Eight Days A Week" by the Beatles; #2-"Stop In the Name of Love" by the Supremes, #3-"The Birds and the Bees" by Jewel Akens, #4-"King of the Road" by Roger Miller, #5-"Can't You Hear My Heartbeat" by Herman's Hermits, #6-"Ferry Cross the Mersey" by Gerry and the Pacemakers, #7-"My Girl" by the Temptations, #8-"This Diamond Ring" by Gary Lewis and the Playboys, and #9-"Goldfinger" by Shirley Bassey. Ask anyone who was alive in musically aware in 1965 and they'll tell you two things: (a.) that every one of those songs is a landmark hit that left a lasting impression, and (b.) that 1965 was one of the greatest years EVER for popular music. And it most definitely was the soundtrack of our lives that year.
