This was a great overview of wonderful books. I personally own most of them. I have all of Jean Haines' books including "Paint Yourself Calm" and "Paint Yourself Positive." I love her style though my own style tends more toward realism. I love that she also shares her artistic journey and her open and encouraging approach to watercolor. Shirley Trevena's books are wonderful as well. Her work is amazing. I paint botanical art as well as a looser intuitive style. I like switching between the two to give myself breaks and a change.

I think I own most of these books as well. I love Felix Scheinberger and Jean Haines, but also Hazel Soan, if you don't know her books. Her use of light is absolutely stunning, and she has a nice way of teaching quick watercolour sketching in many of her books.

Great selection! I would also like to add: COLOR, A Natural History of the Palette by Victoria Finlay. This is a great read. No instruction, no photos, just a sit and read about her travels to explore the stories of colors. Next is: Color In and Out of The Garden by Lorene Edward's Forkner. I've adopted her idea, but I paint the subject instead of photographing it on the swatches. And next, Anna Mason's Watercolor World.

Thanks - it’s fun to hear about your favourites. I love S Quiller’s & S Trevena’s books too, and look forward to checking out the other books you’ve highlighted. I just wanted to pass on that Shirley Trevena also has three great dvds. Her work is stunning! But she’s also a treasure herself. It’s wonderful to hear her reflections on art and her artistic journey, as well as see her creative process unfold on the dvds.

Thanks for sharing Vicki! Yes, I've seen she has DVDs, I guess it's just an outdated format for some of us, I mean I have a DVD player but I also kind of don't want to fuss with it... Oh we've come a long long way since VHS and are soooo spoiled now with streaming... Lol, off topic :) I am sure you're right and I should just grab it and see her in person and in action. If it's half as good as her books it's a treasure indeed.

Thank you for introducing me to your favourite authors. Jean Haines is one of my favourites- but my absolute favourite is Hazel Soan whose use of light is amazing. I have lots of her books - her books on African animals are exquisite. She does a series including Learn Colour in Painting Quickly and Learn to Paint People Quickly are my go to when I’m teaching as the use of colour theory is there too. Once again, thank you for your wonderful videos! 🇬🇧

The fact that you still stand by your book recommendations (how many years later now?) is a great testament to them being awesome, and they are! And I so agree about Shirley Trevena’s books - they kind of blew my mind! I got the powdered charcoal and carbon paper and brought them into my art, very much inspired by her. Her way of flattening 3D images is fascinating to me:) I will now have to go look for Felix’s Domestika course!

Thank you so much for this inspiring video! I was watching it when doing a favourite art " chore" putting together a new watercolour palette, this time w granulating colours. It also made me go to my bookshelf and take out some books I haven,t looked at for a while and will now get inspiration from again, the books by Haines, Trevena, Donaldson and Sheinberger , so thank you for getting me reading them again!! If you like experimental and expressionistic watercolour I can recommend the books by Anne (?) Blockley, she uses all sorts of stuff to get texture and happy accidents, mostly landscape and flowers but always inspiring for trying new techniques. Another lovely book I have is " Making color sing" by J. Dobie, really great for colour theory and is not at all dry and boring as it sounds but have great examples how to use colours withe each other. Another good book about colours is J. Hrts " The watercolour artist´s guide to exceptional colour", it has given me lot of help w colours. Right now I am waiting for a new book to arrive I have seen recommended by some artista, I cannot now recall the authors name but the title is " How to make a watercolor paint itself". I love finding tips on new books, one doesn´t usually take everything in a book into ones own art but there are always new bits and stuff to learn and try out.

Hi Irit! Sorrry it took so long. I work in the ER and had all my shifts early in the month to be off for the holidays. I finally have had a chance to flip through the books. The Quiller Color Choices is gorgeous - I love how he has specific color harmony examples so you can really appreciate the “feel” of a certain color story. I found a different Shirley Trevena book from the ones you mentioned - Shirley Trevena’s Watercolors (portraits, still lifes and abstracts). There is zero instruction in there, but it is a veritable feast for the eyes. Just gorgeous. I’d never heard of her before, and now I feel like I have a whole new style inspiration at my fingertips. Thank you for introducing her books so I can appreciate her work! The Danielle Donaldson one…it is okay but probably my least favorite. Her work is beautiful, but I’m not sure how much of it I would be likely to incorporate. Especially things like the stitching. But I will say the part I DO like is how her color washes and color choices almost look like candy in some of her pieces. And I like her line work. This is long so I am going to post a different one with some books I really enjoy, and I wonder if you might like them too…

Thanks for your feedback Erika! I am glad you like the books! Thinking about it the Danielle Donaldson book probably belongs more in a mixed media/illustrations book. I strongly agree with your view on the Danielle Donaldson's books. I love love love her style and love the books (i own both) but i'm not a huge fan of the method of teaching (only because it doesn't work for me that much). It's a german book only I believe and has a bunch of detailed tutorials on how to paint animals. *sigh* Your channel is bad for my wallet. Every time I click on a video I do so knowing I may end up purchasing either your stamps or books or Neocolor II crayons or god-knows what, haha. So yeah…obviously after watching this, $$$ damage was done. I just purchased used copies of the Quiller book, and one each of the Haines and Trevena books. I am in full-on justification mode, telling myself it’s okay because I purchased them used: it is like the “reduce reuse recycle” version of reading. So basically I am helping eliminate waste AND acquiring knowledge and inspiration. Despite my personal issues with impulse control 😅, I am still so happy you shared your insight on these books. Your own style is inspirational, so of course I am excited to take a peek at the work of artists who inspire you. Thank you for sharing, and have a great day!

I'm sorry not sorry?? I know what you mean, I am easily enabled and have made so many purchases after watching videos... But books are knowledge, and I think you will get so much from them. Buying used is fantastic! It is frustrating that sometimes used book shops (at least the ones I see on Amazon here in Austria) don't offer free shipping like Amazon does, so many times the used books are more expensive than new ones, and that is a bitter pill to swallow... Anyway, glad you enjoyed, please leave me a new comment (I don't get notified when people respond to comments, only new ones) and let me know how you like the books Erika!
