I'm tired of seeing ignorant responses online when keyboard warriors see something they don't like. I made this video in response to the constant backlash breath-hold freedivers receive when sourcing their own protein from the ocean. He without sin cast the first stone. Get off your high horse and reflect on your own habits before judging others...

What it comes down to is that humans for the most part, leave a massive footprint on the earth. What you do is putting in the work to harvest animals in a sustainable manner, and likely limiting your intake as a result, which ultimately is the best thing for the planet. Keep on keeping on friend!

As a pretty avid hunter, now also an avid scuba diver, this is an issue I have encountered many times. You make many valid points. I'm all for the sustainable harvest of wild protein, whatever that might be. The lines get crossed up and feathers ruffled when free divers are harvesting at local dive sites, because, while it's certainly a sustainable harvest, when spread out (as you mentioned) it becomes detrimental when that harvest is concentrated on a specific reef or wall and it's repetitive, and in an area where others come to specifically enjoy said wildlife. Hence, why divers tend to get upset when there are free divers harvesting at local sites. If you're willing to hike, or have a boat and have the ability to get away from these popular areas, all the more power to you. Maybe we'll cross paths out there one day! Thanks for the video, Chris!
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 5 ай бұрын
For sure man! I'm sure we will. I love your videos, you capture some amazing footage. And I totally get it. I love viewing wildlife too. I'm all for leaving Madrona and Oak leaf alone. I've yet to check out tyee and don't plan on harvesting from there when I do. It's a delicate balance between sharing a resource but not being a NIMBY. Nanoose is a large area, plenty of spaces to visit where scuba divers don't. To be honest, I've only done Madrona once and never went back. Same with oak leaf. I think the good stuff starts around 15-20m which is far out of my harvesting range. I wasn't the biggest fan of those spots haha.

I have no issues with other spearos taking octopus or other cephalopods. It's a personal thing but I leave them be and just enjoy interacting with them when I do see them, not going to give some else shit for taking them though... How people have the audacity to give you shit over taking a few octopus here and there when the oceans are being horrifically exploited by commercial fishing is baffling.. But hey there will always be people who have nothing good to say about anything. But for every person that has said something negative, there is probably way more that have enjoyed it and have said nothing. I hope people think about all the points you made, Chris. No one seems to understand that food comes from different places other than a grocery store. I think kids should be introduced to fishing and hunting at an early age. Teaching children where there food comes from and the process it goes through before it's wrapped in plastic and displayed in a cooler. I'm talking every place from the bounty of the Oceans we have, the Lakes and Rivers to also where Deer and Moose roam and are harvested, to a ranch to see how cattle are raised and the care taken by MOST farmers for the welfare of their animals. You nailed the issue of too many Activist Keyboard Warriors and their Holier than Thou attitude when in reality they have NO CLUE how those Prawns or Scallops, Trout or Chicken Wings got to the grocer's store to begin with. Generally someone shows their developing brains a disturbing video of how some less regulated country treats their animals and produce and it shocks them, and so it should, that's why Canada has never adopted those practices. Sorry for the rant, I hope you and your Family are well and I look forward to your next video, my friend!! Cheers!!! - Dave (and of course YES to a coffee next time I'm out on the Coast) PS - I'm going to be out again from June 7th to the 9th or 10th to see a band I loved in the 80's and early 90's who are reuniting again, the band is called Images in Vogue and they are beginning their tour at the Rickshaw on the 8th of June, and I have no idea what kinds of devious plans my friends have made for my brief visit, but should we head out to Nanaimo I will let you know!! @@PNWSamson Great article, more people should be aware of practices like this, as compared to our system. Canada is not without issue or controversy. We have a big problem with feed lots and how they treat animals but it is getting better with regulations and better monitoring of the animals and their health. It is not by a long shot a perfect system but it is improving. Not like the old days where a Butcher would have a paddock on the outskirts of a town where the abattoir and coolers were. The animal was processed and the carcass hung for 14-28 days before being butchered. The meat was of superior quality because each animal was overseen by professional meat cutters who knew how to break down an animal into it's best cuts and very little if anything was ever discarded. Finding a Butcher like that is getting very hard to find these days, and that's a shame but, everything in the name of progress right? Thanks for sharing that article and I hope we can get together face to face in the near future! Take care - Dave

So yes you do you, imma do me, let the animals do them as well, by letting them live. What trait do animals have, that humans don’t, that makes it okay to kill them for food? And based off the biggest study done on farming, plant based diets are by far the most sustainable for the planet. Should we separate the predators from the prey in nature to protect their "right" to live? What about the predators right to eat their prey? We are predators just like sharks and lions. While they developed muscles through evolution we developed brains and tools. We are predators in this system like every other. If I was a fish I'd rather die to Chris who would dispatch me in second rather than being ripped in half or swallowed whole by a bigger fish to slowly die in a bath of stomach acid. Nature is a nasty place. Nothing dies peacefully. We are the only species I'm aware of that can show compassion to its prey and consciously offer it a quick death.

That's a good point. I feel like by going into the ocean you're putting yourself back in the food chain. There are inherent risks to holding your breath in cold water and looking for fish with a loaded speargun. It's not necessarily easy and not everyone can do it. The octopus knows the rules, kill or be killed. Every GPO I've harvested was in the process of eating crabs alive. Mother nature is brutal, spearfishing is the lesser of most evils when you consider how most fish perish. If you consider live stock vs farming fruits and vegetables, I agree, a vegan diet would be more sustainable. But when you consider industrial farming vs breath hold freediving, I feel spearfishing takes the win.

I get the same flack from random people, just for harvesting my own seafood. I don't care what others do to fill the belly. we all cant fish or dive. I get great enjoyment in feeding my local community and fellow neighbours with my extra seafood. sure beats salmon farms or mass produced meat.

Yeah man totally. To each their own. My wife eats meat, I'm not losing sleep over it. That's her decision. People love to feel superior and look down on others at every chance they get. It's sad but seems to be human nature.

Going into the ocean and spearfishing helped me see the light! A little ironic I suppose. Cheers. I wouldn't argue that! Not many vegans out there. On a per capita basis I'd be curious. Basically any fruit or vegetable shipped and wrapped in plastic has an environmental impact.
