I love my job now, but I dearly miss a few things from my time as an engineer at Facebook (Meta).

Not everyone who leaves Big Tech will struggle with these issues. BUT I do know many colleagues who become frustrated after leaving. Engineers who thrive within a big company may not always be succeed outside that bubble. It's important to acknowledge (and learn from) the system around you.

Facing 10x more rejections now than while working as a staff eng at Meta seems so obvious, after you said it. As someone who struggles with fear of rejections, other people talking about and acknowledging their rejections is in an odd way encouraging to me. Thank you for sharing your perspective, Rahul!

Hi rahul , your work is helping everyone in software industry .in meta you get more money that’s it, but here you got more confidence by not depending on any outside help, you’re doing everything by yourself, your voice also matured, now I can able to understand what you’re saying, before it is too fast, not clear that much. Now you have 75k family and you’re helping them with your strong& caring heart for us. Thanks for the great decision.

Can relate, I was part of the first batch of layoffs. Now working on a remote startup, missing the socialisation aspect a lot, and then the food.

Ur keeping it real on KZfaq which is rare, hope you keep going. Also if you believe life is either a great adventure or nothing at all, for most ppl who stay in big tech it ends up being the latter

I left Amazon in 2011, and god I can relate to this video. I was a mid level manager at Amazon who felt frustrated that I wasn't moving up fast enough. I had graduated from an Ivy League school a few years prior, and it was frustrating seeing my old classmates getting promoted so much faster than me. I felt like I was working so hard without seeing growth in my career. I joined a e-commerce company with $50m in yearly revenue as the VP of Technology. I was on the executive team and oversaw all aspects of the site, business analytics. I also mentored the operations team although they never directly reported to me. I felt like a fish out of water, and I regretted leaving Amazon almost immediately. I went from being an average performer working along all-star people who I could learn from. The small startup just didn't have that. It was constantly taking shortcuts, thinking in the short-term and paying off technical debt rather than making the right decision. If anyone reads this who is in big tech, I hope it just serves as a reminder of the great things about their current space. If I had read a message like this before leaving Amazon, I may have tried to wait for another review cycle or two.

Thanks for sharing your story. It goes to show how much we are a product of the system around us. And often times, we're not aware of the ways that the system helps/hurts us, and how that culture carries over between jobs.

I would consider your position much better. More skillsets and responsibilities required. Jack of all trades is better than master of one.

This video resonated with me at many levels. Left faang 1.5 years ago for an early stage startup. The startup journey has been life changing, but there are things about faang that I dearly miss. Great topic. Maybe more conversations on this?

hey Pandey. myself Rahul and i'm in clg third year right now and I don't have any knowledge on anything so far i haven't done any projects. so I got like 5months of time and i want to learn something and get placed in a decent company with decent package. when i checked your youtube video im getting little bit interested in android development side cause its little bit unique compare to web development cause the full stack developers is booming right now everybody wanting to be a full stack developer in web side. but i want to be little bit unique i feel like there is nobody talking about android development. so i need ur guidance of getting started with andorid development and what are the free resources to learn from and it be better for providing roadmap to things learn in 5months as much as possible and the project what should i do to get placed.

Hi, Rahul. I am learning android development and I am creating a netflix clone (with very few functionality). The Home page shows a list of movies based on categories (nested recyler view). Everytime I navigate back to home page the api is called and loading screen is shown. How do I minimize this api call?. I am new to development and Android Programming. Any suggestion from Rahul or any experienced developer in comment section is appreciated. Thanks in Advance.

I definitely might. My goal right now is to contribute to Taro's mission to best help software engineers through career advancement. IMO the best way to do that is not through coding tutorials but through fostering high quality discussion and content.
