Not necessarily. Between intervention, medication, and some displays of compassion, he already showed some measure of improvement. Throw on top of that a change of venue by moving to give him a fresh start on adulthood gives him a solid chance at turning it around. My ex had a cousin that was arguably way worse than this kid, dude would go after people with knives, including his own mother. He was flat out sociopathic. But you talk to him nowadays and you would never believe it. Between completing puberty rewiring his messed up brain, medication, and intervention, he's turned into an amazing man that works super hard to help the people around him and is driven to succeed.

The last part you can read that the kid is getting better. He visited his uncle (op) to fix his bike and start talking to him again. The progress is slow but there's hope

He doesn't show aggression so much as addiction, in my opinion. His aggression was likely FROM his addiction, and if dad had to quit booze for the same issue as hinted, to the point he had to quit cold turkey, then it seems even more likely.

It does seem like a strong possibility. Especially since when he did end up returning home without the things he left with but refused to say who attacked him. He probably kept his mouth shut because he was either threatened or too afraid to say anything or he was too embarrassed to say anything about what happened.

Moving is probably the best option for the kid to start over. I hope he can be better in the future.

@@butterflywings188 is it? i thought it was a brain chemistry thing. i personally have bipolar 2, and i wasn't *abused* per say, but i was emotionally neglected. my therapist told me a lot of what my parents did was abuse but they didn't really ever hit me, so i'm not sure it counts as abuse. i know it would if i thought about it happening to someone else. i'm getting off track. this is interesting information, thank you. i'm gonna have to do some extra research.

Abuse can be: physical, emotional or mental. And neglect can also be physical, emotional and mental. I'm really happy that you want to research into it! A lot of people are in denial and can't accept that their parents abused them. It's not your fault! Its because your parents are emotionally immature. It's also not their fault! They are emotionally immature because they've also been abused and/or neglected as children. Although, even if your trauma is not your fault, your healing is always your responsibility... I also had an abusive childhood and much of my adult life, and deal with CPTSD because of it as well as being Bipolar, and while of course we feel and act differently in swings (I tend to mania) it doesn't change our basic sense of decency or moral compass. That has to already and separately be part of that person. Even during complete dissociation I have not done anything bad to other people (I do have some interesting paintings I have no memory of doing though!).

Same, bro/sis. I admit during manic phases i was super cocky and had delusions of grandeur, but i always had the sense to keep that nonsense to myself. And i always used that extra energy to uplift others instead of spreading misery. When i was in depressive phases, i would want to end myself because i mistakenly thought it would be less painful for people around me. Still didnt think about making people's lives miserable. The ones who actively bully others and keep taking away from others are just bad people period. Bipolar might amplify that a bit, but they had to have been terrible in the first place to even have the idea to toss hammers at victims.

I call mania my "Queen Of The World" phase, and sometimes I feel I was a bit selfish later, even though I apparently hold it in well because I'm very concious of it when it happens, but I have never harmed anybody else because I still knew right from wrong. I absolutely understand that in a depressive phase sometimes thinking not being here anymore would make things so much easier and better for those around me. It's a terrible feeling to have, but we really think it's the truth at the time. And I agree with you. With people who are so terrible to others, it's a part of them and not the Bipolar, that might just trigger it into a certain direction more but it's already part of who they are and not the condition making them like that. You sound like you have a good head on your shoulders with your Bipolar. I know it's hard sometimes, but being the way you seem is something to be proud of.

and media doesn't help this either. i have DID as well as bipolar 2 with a tendency towards depressive episodes, and i often get villainized because of it- the DID especially. it's always portrayed in media as being psychopathic in nature and is simply not- not outwardly, at least. sure, we have a headmate who's a little more on the aggressive side, but he exists solely to protect us from physical and sexual abuse. most of the 'aggressive' ones are internally aggressive, focusing their anger on me (the host) for everything wrong in our life. i also hate systems who blame their bad behavior on their headmates/alters. that's what gatekeepers are for. i understand that sometimes it can be hard to keep certain headmates at bay, but it's still not an excuse. it just makes me really really mad. gives us all a bad name.
