With the incarnate Son of God within her womb, Mary sang a hymn of praise to the God who cares mightily for the lowest of His servants. In this sermon, R.C. Sproul continues his series in the gospel of Luke by expounding on the rich truths found in Mary’s Magnificat.
This sermon was preached by R.C. Sproul at Saint Andrew's Chapel in Sanford, Fla. Hear more from his series in the gospel of Luke: • The Gospel of Luke: Se...

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. Today (December 25, Christmas Day), this was the basis for our Sunday School Lesson of the Day. It was entitled "Mary Rejoices." Merry Christmas.

She is the mother of Jesus. She is not our mother. Nowhere in the Bible does it teach any idea that she, "looks upon us every day." She would be horrified to see people worshiping her.

Of course it is vital and well deserved to have reverence for God, the Creator of everything....but, perhaps a healthy dose of real fear, as in real "terror" might be healthy as well....what do I mean?...our Savior said it perfectly in Matthew 10 verse 28....a healthy dose of real fear, as in terror right there.

If Mary is/was sinless as the Catholics claim, why would she need a Saviour?

I was saved from an RC background and, in my work of street evangelism, I often meet RCs (not Sprouls, but Roman Catholics!). I remember once meeting a rather aggressive nun who was outraged when she leaned that I had come out of the RC "church"; her anger become even more intense when I told her that Mary was a sinner and needed a Saviour - talk about Mount Vesuvius, she just erupted!

She was still saved by God, just not in the same way we were. Jesus saved her from experiencing original sin, while he saves those who love him and have faith in him from the punishments of our sin. Think of it like this: if a boy is about to fall into a pit and his parent prevents him from falling in, you could say that the boy has been "saved from the pit". That is how Mary was saved. The way we are saved can be though of like this: if a boy fall into a pit and his parent pulls him out, then he has been "saved from the pit". In both examples, the boy was "saved from the pit". In both examples, the parent can be called the "savior" as they are doing the saving. In the same way, both we and Mary can call Jesus our savior.

@@Jcangel26 I got that she was a wretched sinner just like the rest of humanity, I was wondering how Catholics could consider her "sinless", or without the original sinful nature as there's nowhere in Scripture that says she was born of a virgin, thus not born in sin.

They weren't her words. She didn't speak English. (surprised?) She was quoting Isaiah.

I occupy every inch of my body and there is no soul in here with me. Then I prayed to the Lord for twenty years with no reply. So I left the Lord and the soul in peace and went on my way.

My dear brother James...what is it that you prayed to the Lord for?...did you remember to thank Him everyday in those twenty years for what you do have or at least what you have avoided?
