This was actually the most helpful video. I watch a lot of these types of videos and most say that got 1500+ and 4.0 GPAs with 10+ extracurriculars, but this was super reasonable. I wish you the best in college, you seem like an awesome person!

Wow, the fact you took part in Astronomy Research as a 14 year old (is that correct? you said you've been doing it for 4 years) shows your dedication to doing well and also probably means you had a great upbringing from your family. Congrats.

From what I can gather, you need to have competitive stats to show that you have the cognitive ability to compete at the highest level. Then, you also need extracurriculars to show that you can "chew gum and walk" at the same time. You finally need a killer essay to show that you can think for yourself.

An Asian in Harvard with less than 1500 SAT? There’s no way - *published research* oh
@j.d9070
@j.d9070 2 жыл бұрын
You may have a very high SAT score, but if that's the only achievement you have in your application, it just shows that you spent a lot of your free time studying to get those scores. On the other hand, a student with "only" 1440 SAT but lots of activities outside of school shows that he can get good grades while having less time to study, which means that he is more talented than students who only have high SAT scores. Some Asian families are surprised because their kids get crazy SAT scores and still don't make it to Havard. But schools in the United States don't work like schools in Asian countries. In Asian countries, schools don't care about your extra-curricular activities, they only care about your grades, which is not enough to show a student's full potential, especially when all applications are from good students.

This may not apply to this person specifically (and congrats to her for her achievements), but I can't help but think of how the college admission meritocratic process is a sham, where parents who are either wealthy and/or well connected have the resources or ability to open doors to allow their kids to be able to do all of these extraordinary high school activities that the average kid never could even envision. Stephanie Yoshida may very well have sought out and pursued all of these things alone, with little help, or out of genuine interest, but I think the large majority of kids with such accomplishments were only able (or willing) to achieve them through relentless directing and assistance of parents with the requisite means (and from a young age). Consider: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eLJ1qa2Gs8zdco0.html

i really agree with you. i feel like if you want to get into all of these ivies, you gotta have access to amazing opportunities! my school personally doesn't offer advanced/honor classes, AP programs or these extracurriculars that every ivy league student had access to in high school. i just go to a basic school as an international student, and i'm so stressed out about what i'm gonna put in my college application. i also think you're right on the money situation. as non-US student, you don't have that many access to scholarships that can help you pay your college year, and if your parents don't have the money to pay, you can't go, which is such a shame.

@@er7586 If your scholar's ECs and stats way surpass hers, then yeah, every university will open their door. But i'm very skeptical about the ECs that you say "way surpass" hers because her ECs are rock solid. In 2 of her 3 main activities she won an important award, so unless publishing an article in Nature or winning an International Olympiad or being a worldwide known musician or artist, or founding and running a successful business or doing something that represent a big achievement even for an adult with a long career behind, i don't really see how we can "way surpass" her ECs
