Here are the SDS sheets for both MMO and Marvel air tool oil. Section 3.2 shows the Mixture of each and they are IDENTICAL! Is this true or just laziness on the writer of the sheets? The main part is Petroleum Distillates (Hydrotreated Heavy Naphthenic) A search for what Hydrotreated Heavy Naphthenic is didn't yield much really. I did see the term mineral oil associated with search results. One thing this tells me is that buying MMO in the size container I do is a bit more economical than buying Air Tool Oil. The air tool oil comes in smaller containers and costs more. So they are selling the SAME product, labeled differently and making more money on the air tool oil. Love your videos David - and I 100% agree with the 'smell = memory' rationale. That's why I'll never give up glow engines. The smell of glow exhaust reminds me of going out to the field with my dad when I was a young lad and being amazed at all the rc aircraft. Happy memories.

Bravo sir, well said! You probably have more age than me but I am one of those that was there before the Internet and have watched it become what it is (I'm 43). While I do appreciate online advice, I know that there are some folks that are just spouting off incorrect opinions. In my 40's I have grown to trust people less and less... Both from personal experience and the good ol internet. It's sad that it has come to that. So as a result, I sometimes tune people and their opinions out and learn things on my own. I will say I have heard others praise MMO and I have bought a bottle to try out. I've been doing glow a short time so I'm very interested to see how well it does.

David, nice informative video article. About 5-6 years ago, a friend of mine showed up after work and said, hey jump in my truck and lets go fly a plane. I said sure, why not haven't done this since is was 14, im now 65. And when I smelled the nitro burning, it brought me right back to when I was 14. I was back into trains HO, but now back flying everything. Still a lot of electric, but some nitro. Even started a hobby shop, probably just so I could have a toy store. But REALLY have the heart for flying.But you are right, the smell brought back happier times. I have a monthly article called Hobby Central in our local paper, just having fun. Also did a 3 part article on Pilot Robert and captain Blaz, over in Slovenia, that's how I found your channel, when Blaz talked about you. So I'm subscribed to your channel, and think you do a GREAT job. And as I always say Don't forget to let your IMAGINATION RUN WILD!

Thanks for the video. There is no marvel mystery oil to be found here in Sydney Australia but I do follow your tips for engine care and I see that you have similar levels of heat and humidity. I used to use singer sewing machine oil as a kid with control line engines (cox, enya & taipan) but these days I use mineral base two stroke oil with no issues but the engines are used regularly. I do notice these days that a lot of people seem to have little if any social skills but the upside is a great knowledge base from people like yourself and the Petrincic brothers making this hobby easier (and fun) for people like me that have come back to it later in life. David. I appreciate your videos. As my flying field becomes more and more electric engine the knowledge of nitro engines is going away. I did buy a bottle of Marvel's Mystery oil. I surely want my engines to last as long as yours. I just absolutely love the sound of a nitro engine over the electric "dentist tool" sound. Lol Thanks for the sharing!

We have a group who flies off the water twice a month. I've been doing that since 2003. When the float planes are done for the day, I run the fuel out of the engines, add MMO, then run it in with my starter. No problems so far but it's only been 15 years. Great product. Recommend it to the new guys flying glow who join the club.

I think it comes down to what works for you, iuse transmission fluid never had an issue but my motors dont sit for more than afew weeks

Great Video, Very helpful, I'm an old motor head and just bought some RC cars for my son and I to do together. (Get him out of his phone/computer) I have plenty of MMO in my garage and it will protect the motor for a year or so. I plan on having a few different kinds to play with and wont be able to run them all.

Nice video Dave! I love marvel mystery oil as well as 3 in 1. I use the Marvel as a cleaning oil on stuck engines and for storing four strokes. I use 3 in 1 to lubricant clean engines and storing two strokes. I believe you can’t go wrong with either one.

Hello David ,been subscribed for a while now and agree wholeheartedly about internet misinformation and some people's opinions , I started the hobby racing boats back in early 80's . We ran such high nitro content that afterrun oil was required . I always used marvel and also never had any issues . Like you I learned from a much older gentleman who sadly is no longer with us . I tried to be as much of a sponge when listening to him because of his experience and he was always extremely competive ,do as the winners do ! Keep doing what you're doing , I've learned a lot from your videos as a relative newcomer to flying , also thanks for your service

Hey there Dave, I also use Marvel Mystery Oil. I actually use the air tool oil more than the additive because I prefer the smaller nipple that the bottle has but both work great. It can be found at Menards but, I think you hit the nail on the head.... I don't think it matters what you use for after run oil when you properly store your engine after running it. I see so many people that just shut off there engine and then it sits for months or years in their dark basement. Most of my planes get flown so frequently I have no use to pickle the engine unless I pull it off of the air frame. Additionally if I have an engine sitting on the shelf I find it useful to rotate the parts, including turning the engine over and rotating the carb. And finally, if you are planning on sitting on an engine, apply the oil and put it in a plastic bag. The list can go on and on of what you should do but I think the actual oil that you use is minuscule as long as you actually take the right precautions and take care of your engine.

Hi David, thanks for another great video. I haven’t seen MMO in Oz but tips from other r/c aeromodelers is to use Automatic Transmission Fluid, which I do now. I am wondering what is the best or easiest way to get it into the crankcase in 4-stroke nitro engines as it isn’t like a 2-stroke where placing it into the carby inlet goes directly into the crankcase.

Hey Dave, I have used Marvel air tool oil for a long time. I get it at Menard's and yes it smells great also. Good video with several great points. I too have become disenchanted with forums, commentors, keyboard know it alls.

Nice video. Can't get that mystery oil in Australia. Old guy at my club taught me many years ago to ATF, which wot I use. I recently bought a plane the four-stroke motor on it which has been sitting for 20 years. The motor turned over so smooth, the old guy said he uses sewing machine oil. One day I saw some guy open the needle valve and Squirtle methylated spirits with a syringe through the motor with the glow plug out, then put after run in. Another guy spray something similar to WD40. A lot different ways to skin a cat.

I am in the UK. We don't have Marvel but I suspect it is very similar to Redex fuel additive (it's even the same colour). Anyway, I use automatic transmission fluid which seems to work - I agree with you that if you use something and it works that's a good reason to continue to use it. It doesn't smell that great but that is not a major factor (though I loved your nostalgic reason for using Marvel due to its aroma!) A question for you (I got there in the end!): due to lack of storage space, I hang some of my models nose down. Is after run oil sufficient to protect the front bearings or will there still be some nitro that could drain into the bearings? Love your channel. Btw, a shame Laser engines are so rare in the US. I have 6 (2x70, 100, 150, 2x180), wonderful engines. Grahame

Nameless faceless internet person here. I've always used hobbico after run oil but as far as I know it's just marvel mystery oil in a little hobbico bottle. Its red, watery and smells just like marvel oil. But it's for my traxxas nitros . Not flying RCs. The hobbico oil has since been discontinued but the couple tiny bottles I bought years ago have lasted awhile. Now you can buy tower hobbies brand after run oil. But again I think they just bought the rights to put MMO in their own branded bottle..

I've actually ran a 2 stroke rc car engine on marvel mystery oil. I would be curious how good it lubricates and cools an engine. It ran good for the short time I ran it.

Thanks for the info! I used to use hobby after run oil back in the day, but I'm sure the Marvel is going to be just as good if not better, and probably cheaper. Hello David, i love you video's, i love combustion engines, the noise, the smell, the moving parts, lets say the technology of it all, and a like flying them, it makes me happy, i am 51 years old and i do this hobby for 37 years now, and i am still learning new things to day, sometimes new way's to do thinks are beter, and sometimes the oud way is the way to go, but after run oil is always a discussion that never ends, i do not get the same oils you have, i live in the Netherlands, and here you do not get Marvel oil, never heart of it, i always run my engines dry like you do, and than i have pacer after run oil, now here this is also not available any more, so i have a little left, but for next year a need to buy some new oil for my engines, i have glow engines, the most are 4 stroke, and gas engines, do you have tips or someone else has tips for me

I also use MMO. I've had good luck with it, too. We float fly every other weekend and after flying off the water, my engines always get a shot of Mystery Oil after I run them dry. They get the oil, then a good spin with the starter to move it through the engine. On the open forums, you always have someone who will disagree with you no matter what you say. Just ignore them and go on. If i listened to the naysayers, I would have thrown away all my OS FP and LA engines because they are terrible engines and nothing but junk. I run them all the time. Super reliable engines. Guess I'm a junk collector.
