I can’t help thinking that the restrictive license ladder is just a way of turning people away from motorcycling. All these regulations have been brought in on the grounds of safety and in one way they have reduced the number of serious accidents involving bikes, but it appears they have just reduced the number motorcyclists on the road, and that is why the accidents have reduced.

I forgot to also say that my thoughts on that point are that if someone is interested and likes motorcyvles enough then I don't beleive they would be put off by the restrictions. But that's my personal opinion. There may be people who turn away because of how long the journey can be and also the price is another factor as well since you'll pay £100 for CBT and about £500 for the lessons and test combined if you're just doing that once. Do yeah it is a very interesting point and could be driving people away who are thinking of bikes

@@Reenomeano it is certainly less accessable now to new riders. a 47bhp A2 bike is still a hella lotta fun though, I got one recently myself after having owned incredibly fast and powerful bikes and loved thrashing the KTM 390 Duke around. I even think my Moto Guzzi V7 is an A2 compliant motorcycle now and I adore thrashing that around! :D

I am an old and bold, when I passed my bike test at 18, I could have jumped straight onto a superbike had I had the means to do so. Instead I worked my way up the engine capacities in small bites and proceeded to fall off pretty much every bike I had until I was 25 having been riding since I was 16. I have since decided I no longer liked falling off bikes on the road, so have given it up for now... not riding, just the falling off bit! :D I do like to keep my skilss going though so periodically I fall off my dual-sport on green lanes to make sure I don't forget how to do it! :D

My opinion on this situation is a bit interesting: I personally agree with there being restrictions, I don't think a 17 year old with barely any road experience should be allowed on a ZX14R, just as much as I don't think a 17 year old should be allowed in a Porsche or Lambo. I feel like there should be restrictions on both sides but with more intensive training. So, on a bike, that would be doing a licence tier and being able to ride a 250 or 300 with L plates but with three to four days of rider training (especially talking more about more advanced rider technique, such as IPSGA [which is "Information, Position, Speed, Gear, Acceleration", which derived from ploce bike training] and especially in anticipation and car body language reading) and ride on said 250/300 for a year or two, then do an even more difficult and intensive test for an unrestricted licence but with a strong recommendation for somewhere around the 500-700cc class of bikes. Then on the car side of the spectrum, for the first year or two, restricted to a max of 1.2L, then another test and be unrestricted. This would all be reliant on there being regular retesting every 5 years, to ensure a driver is competent on the road. I'm saying this as an 18 year old who was been riding since 16 and wants to do an Advanced Rider course and Police Rider course after doing my A2 (please hurry up July). I honestly see too many people who shouldn't be on the road, car or bike, and I think there needs to be a bit more scrutiny to the learning process
@Reenomeano
@Reenomeano 4 жыл бұрын
Yes that is an interesting point to make as well about maybe restricting car drivers etc as you say and then I guess the other argument with that is if you come off a bike even at a low speed you can still break something or die but in a car your surrounded by a box so there's not as much risk? Maybe that's why they're not as restricted compared to bikes?

What put me off for so long is the price of the license. Like you said I use to rag the crap out of my 125 and have had some close calls so if that was on a bigger bike the outcome would've been far worse. I just wish I took the progressive route and I could've had my A license now, but like I said the price put me off back then. And I'm probably only wishing it was different because I wish I could get a bigger bike but in reality, I've only just got my first big bike at the age of 21 and I know I underestimated the power the first time I tried a big bike, especially since coming up from a 125. Restrictions are there for a reason and I know a lot of younger riders think they're totally capable of handling a bigger bike, I respect the restrictions because I know if I had anything bigger without working my way up and gaining experience it probably wouldn't turn out well.

My opinion is that the restrictions are necessary. As you said in the video people need to learn and move up as they gain experience. Yes a 17 year old can learn to drive a car but they are restricted in speed for the first year and the higher insurance premiums are in my opinion there to discourage them from getting faster cars/bikes. If i am right in thinking that new drivers (of cars anyway) if they get 6 or more points on their license in the first 2 years then they can be banned which again is a kind of restriction to discourage bad driving (I may be wrong about the amount of points and time scale).

I got my A license mainly for work as I have to road test a lot of different bikes, but also because I wanted something big and fast (cb1300) and I totally agree, I’m still immature now when it comes to riding, I enjoy a ‘spirited’ ride, however I’ve also got a fair bit of experience which helps me decide when it is and isn’t appropriate to whack the throttle open, I did my A license at 21 because that’s when my 2 years of A2 ran out, I didn’t go straight for a big fast bike though, I got an sv650 which was plenty powerful enough to have fun on, slightly too much at times, that’s now my fiancé’s bike, but had to put a restricted ECM on it for her as she’s on an A2 and quite happy to stay on one 👍 great video

If it were up to me I'd not have restrictions, however I'm also not massively against having then. What I really don't like is that you have to be retested in order to upgrade, I'd like the upgrades to happen automatically when you reach the appropriate age, without the need to be retested, or at the very least the upgrade tests should be free and a lot shorter than a full test.
@Liam_Bollocks
@Liam_Bollocks 4 жыл бұрын
Mustang they used to do it like this, with the automatic upgrade after 2 years, but apparently there were a lot of people who would get their A2 and then either not ride much or stay on a 125 for the 2 years then jump straight on a 600RR or a 1000cc

There is talk of engine capacity restrictions in regards to cars now, supposedly along the same lines as with motorbikes,... Some will complain, but let's face it, some 17 yr old lad passing his test in a 1000cc car then being legally able to walk out the test centre, and jump into a McLaren 720S capable of 211 mph is quite ludicrous....

I went straight from a 250cc to a 1000cc when i did my test back in the 80's there were far more riders getting killed back then, so fair point in the new rules but downside is less people riding and also the new license is a lot more restrictive unless you go straight to DAS

I did my CBT and then DAS a week later at 40+ purely because the tests seems to be becoming more expensive and complicated every year. Plus as you say every 2 years doing a retest ? No thank you from a cost point of view but yes good point about the skills refresher by doing it. I've got a CB500 02 plate after passing test and frankly its scared the pants out of me a few times due to my inexperience but also saved me. Its never been the bikes fault or a cars fault thank fully. I will be riding all winter and expect a few tarmac experiences but thanks to quite a few of your hubbies videos I think a lot less. Keep up the vids.
@Reenomeano
@Reenomeano 4 жыл бұрын
You only have to redo it every 2 years if you're on the CBT. Once you have the A2 or A licence you have it and you don't need to retake it. But to do the A licence you either need to be 24 or hold the A2 licence for 2 years whichever comes first basically. And thanks and do you mean you don't overthink as much now thanks to his videos or do you mean you don't want to ride more after watching them?

Similar thing going on in Japan! We need to pay a lot of money for taking a medium size motorcycle riding course and then pay again a lot of money for the unrestricted displacement motorcycle riding course. I think the government should not put a cap on displacement of a motorcycle for new riders, but instead put a cap on the amount of horsepower of the motorcycle. I went from a 400cc Ducati Monster to a Harley Davidson Fatboy. I now have 4 times the displacement but my little Ducati is definitely faster than my Harley!

Indeed, it’s pretty strict passing the motorcycle test here! For the big bike license, we need to ride on a 20cm narrow bridge that is like 15 meters long as slow as possible. Falling off of it or putting a foot on the ground is an instant fail! Then there’s the slalom which we need to go through as fast as possible without hitting a cone, or , again, instant fail! And lastly there’s the bumpy part where we have to ride on something like a metal ladder while standing on the pegs and go as slow as possible without falling or putting a foot on the ground! It was hard, stressful but also challenging and fun! Until test day, where it was very stressful! Anyways, thanks for the nice videos!

I'm doing my DAS A2 at the moment (waiting till around spring next year as its too icy to do it now) so I can ride my ninja 400 which I for some reason decided to buy before getting my license and I completely agree with the staged license, yes I have to do my CBT then my theory and then my A2 and then the enhanced rider scheme to get my insurance down and to get some more training but with that I know that when I've done all of that I'll be more confident in my riding ability as opposed to doing a 2 days course and throwing my leg over whatever I can afford and crashing (again) because I don't have the skills or experience, sure I wish I could just get my license at the snap of the fingers but I'm glad that the restrictions are there so you are forced to do the training and practice good riding so in the end you come out as a better rider.

The main drawbacks for buying a bigger bike is insurance will be higher and you are more likely to bite off more than you can chew early on. Is their a time limit for the A1/A2 license after you have it and does it run out after a certain amount of time, Like the 2 years on the CBT before you have to take your FULL A ??
@Reenomeano
@Reenomeano 4 жыл бұрын
Once you've got it you've got it but the requirements to take your full A licence is to either hold an A2 licence for 2 years or be 24 years old. If you haven't held an A2 licence for 2 years or you're not 24 you can't do your full A (unrestricted) licence. And you can take the A2 as early as 19 years old I believe but you need to have a CBT So people who aren't yet 24 will do a CBT and then either wait till they're 24 and do the A licence or do the A2 when they turn 19 and either keep that or upgrade the A licence when they hit 24 or when they've held the A2 licence for 2 years Or you could be 24 and do your CBT and then either your A2 or full A depending on what you want Theres no time limit on the A or A2 licence once you have it you have it but the CBT has to be retaken every 2 years

@@Reenomeano what about the A1 , is their a time limit ? I`m over 24 , for your info.
@Reenomeano
@Reenomeano 4 жыл бұрын
@@norfolkmotos no because the A1, A and A2 are full licences so once you have them you have them. They are classed as full licences but the A1 and A2 are restricted. To make it simpler basically the A1 is a full licence but you're restricted to 125s only The A2 is a full licence but you're restricted to 500s (so can't ride anything above that) and the A is a full licence but you're un restricted so you can ride any size motorcycle The CBT is a compulsory basic test and it is technically a provisional licence it is not a full licence so it has to be retaken every 2 years Once you pass either your A1, A2or A you don't need to retake that test but there are requirements to be eligible to take those tests For example to be eligible to take an A1 test you need to have passed a CBT, a theory test and be 17 To be eligible to take the A2 you need to have passed a CBT, a theory test and be 19 To be eligabe for the A you need to have passed a CBT, a theory test and either be 24 or have held the A2 licence for 2 years whichever comes first. If you take and pass your A2 or A1 because you're not eligible for the A or A2 licence then when you become eligible to do the licence you want you need to pass a test which means you basically conplete the same test you did before but the outcome results in a licence that allows you to ride a bigger CC motorcycle You have to pay for the tests as well so some people amy just wait till their 24 and then they only need to do 1 final test. In the description of this video I link one of spicy's videos that explains this in more detail Hope this helps :)
