Solid reasoning for number 1, and I’m also glad to see some special uses for the secondary abilities that I wasn’t aware of. Time to play it again and make use of those neat tricks, especially what with the additional changes in the JPN version.

I gotta go with any of the metroidvania games for 1-4, and Simon's Quest at number 5. Don't know why, but those PS1, GBA and DS games are so easy to jump back into, when I'm bored.

Awesome!! Castlevania 3 is my favorite of all the series, you did surprise me with putting it at number one, most people would've had it at number 2 or 3. I remember also waking up everyday in the summer of 91' playing it over and over again! Even till this day I absolutely enjoy it, but now I try to speedrun it!

Great list friend! Dracula's Curse rates above Symphony Of The Night for me as well. I think it's due to the fact I too was there when it first came out. Personally I feel that Simon's Quest was the first Metroidvania and I love it! I know many don't but for me it's a relaxing play through (try to get through it losing as few lives as possible for a challenge). I'd really have to think to compose my top 5, but Dracula's Curse would most definitely be there. (btw, I love Symphony Of The Night for all those concerned).

Great list, man! The current Konami situation is rough and they haven't really acknowledged the 30th Anniversary, so I'm glad there are KZfaqrs like yourself to do it. And I agree that October is the perfect time to re-play some of these games! I'd say my Favorite 5 would be: 5) Circle of the Moon: I played it recently for the first time and it truly surprised me how much I enjoyed the gameplay/music. 4) Symphony of the Night: I love it for all the reasons that others do, but my fav are the traditional style of the early games. 3) Lords of Shadow: I know many hate on it, but I was drawn into the story/visuals like few other games. 2) Rondo of Blood: Played it on the Wii VC and I feel like it's difficult in a perfectly satisfying way. 1) Dracula's Curse: Like you, this game is basically my childhood and what I think of when I hear "Castlevania." Amazing.

You should have done top 10 games. There are too many not to list! And Simon's Quest is hugely underrated!!!! I know why some fans don't like it but the music in it is just classic as hell. And the day/nighy mechanic is pretty cool. Certainly makes you fearful of the nighttime.😂

Nicely done, was sure SotN would take the #1 spot, but you rose above and made C3 the star. (Though I do think the Japanese version is the best, both in terms of music and difficulty)

Very Nice List for me I would have to go with: 1. Rondo of Blood (I love the soundtrack in this game) 2. Belmont's Revenge (Great use of the GB Sound Chip) 3. Super Castlevania IV (no explanation needed) 4. Dracula's Curse (Beat the game with each partner character and I even attempted to beat the game without a partner character) 5. Portrait of Ruin (The game really did a good job of balancing challenge and giving a lot of depth to the level themes)

Castlevania 3 really doesn't get talked about enough so I'm shocked its number 1 for you. Also, nice CotM made the list. For me, I'd have to say: Castlevania 2 Belmont's Revenge, Castlevania Order of Ecclesia, Castlevania SotN, Super Castlevania IV, and Simon's Quest.

Great video. Having played through most of them except the GBA and DS metroidvania style entries, Castlevania 3 and maybe the second one on N64, Super Castlevania 4 is probably my favorite standard style game in the series. SOTN is up there too but is a very different type of game, like the other metroidvanias. SC4 is definately easier than most of them but I really enjoyed the atmosphere and music, level design. I just did a complete run of SOTN and it was great to finally be able to fully appreciate the game. Back in the olden days I just took the shortcut and ended the game early, wrote it down, of course missing the upside down castle and maybe most of the first castle. I think there was a way to fight dracula very early. I was more about the end result back then, ha ha. SC4 I am just finishing up a run to edit together as a tutorial on the game. It was nice to revisit that game again. Have to get back to the Castlevania 3 and finish that one as well.

I love your list. I know I'm in the minority but I would find a way to sneak in Simon's Quest. Probably by sliding the original CV to #4 and pushing out Circle - sorry, lol. You're top three are just perfect (not picking a Belmont for the number one spot just doesn't sit right, but if you aren't old enough to live the anticipation between the original and each successor then I could see how that might not matter). I think I still have the box for Dracula's Curse, I remember it had a promo for winning a trip to Transylvania for Halloween - how great is that! That game was the most anticipated for my friends and me and it absolutely lived up to the hype. Number one for me, no doubt.

I haven't played all of them, but the ones I personally liked (in no order). Castlevania 4 (SNES), Rondo (PCE-CD), Castlevania 2 (when I played it at the time, it felt really scary and eery, now its panned for its unintuitiveness), and Portrait (I really liked all the characters you could later choose, lots of replayability), I also like the Castlevania remake on the x680000 and the music option.

My kind of people. First time I've seen someone praise Circle of the Moon for the same reason I love it so much. It is the game that mixes the difficulty of old Classicvania games with the exploration of the post SotN games. It was the game I was most anxious for when I got my GBA, the premise of a Metroid like game in Castlevania in my pocket was too much to pass. I also enjoy Castlevania 3 a lot, it's always a different game. Personally my list would be something like 1. SotN 2. Rondo of Blood 3. Aria/Dawn of Sorrow (consider them 1 game, and if anything I love the Julius/Yoko/Alucard mode) 4. Castlevania 1 (it's the one I play the most, been playing it for literally decades. It is for me what 3 is for you) 5. Belmont's Revenge (yes, love this one)/Order of Ecclesia (which tried to something akin to Classicvania while still being post SotN) I love Castlevania too much to narrow it down to 5. The first one is certainly the one I've played the most. I have a soft spot for the old GB games as well. I never really grew attached to 4 although I see it as a great game. I still play 3 from time to time, I love how every playthrough is different. I love portrait of ruin for self imposed challenges I do Everytime I play (only use Jonathan, only the Vampire Killer without upgrades for the whole game). Great videos, I subbed.

A well edited video and i wont argue with the list. 'Simons quest' was my least favourite, no fun at all. I also enjoyed the Mega Drive/Genesis game, 'Bloodlines', that would of made my list for sure.

i'm not good at top 5 or top 10 lists, but i will get to my favorite, and that is the one and only Super Castlevania IV. the graphics, the music, the controls, the ability to whip in multiple directions and hold down the button to fling it around, the atmosphere, the presentation, even the wicked awesome box art. not only is Super Castlevania IV my favorite castlevania game but it is also my favorite game of all-time. i love this damn game!

Good list, man. I've been playing Castlevania since 1989 and it's one of my favorite series. I'm not that fond of Castlevania IV since I beat it first try. Way too freakin' easy. I'd rank my top 5 as follows: 5- Castlevania 3 4-Rondo of Blood 3-Castlevania Legacy of Darkness (incredibly underrated game!) 2-Aria of Sorrow 1-SOTN

I first started playing Castlevania in 1995-1996 with Castlevania Bloodlines on the sega channel adapter. I need to complete it. Then I played the nes versions in highschool 2001. Friend showed symphony of the night when I spent at the night at his house. Then on to the GBA versions like Aria of sorrow. I could have sworn I played circle of the moon, but I don't remember it after watching gameplay. Skipped the N64 versions because it did not appeal to me. Glad I did after seeing the author's review of Castlevania 64. Father took me to best-buy in October 2003 and bought Lament of Innocence for me. Loved it and hard as balls with the second side story of Joachim. I never finished Joachim since I had difficulty with him. I did not know of the second hidden character of Pumpkin until now. I waited for the next game, Curse of Darkness. I saw the review in PSM magazine and skipped it. Same friend said the game was OK. I just bought it two days ago, over 10 years later. I had purchased other castlevania for the nintendo ds (Dawn of sorrow and Portrait of ruin). I still haven't played them. I am still waiting a sequel to Lament of Innocence that includes Mathias. Top 5 (no order). Castlevania 1 Castlevania 3 Castlevania 2: simon''s quest (YES I SAID NUMBER 2. Ducks into cover. Though it was hard and you had difficulty where to go. I liked the story and music. Castlevania: Lament of innocence. Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. (Did not finish but love the idea of hidden characters that were included) These may change until I play the others.

About a CV that isn't on this list but mentioned by many: CV Bloodlines. This game was so good, it took everything out of the Sega Gen/MD visualy and it maybe had even the best CV audio in that era. But the game had 2 big flaws most other CV's didn't have: a half done story and a short playtrough. Sega could be there with SC-IV or even topped that one I think. Still it's one of my top 5 CV games :-)

Never played the PlayStation one. I was surprised at number 1. I was expecting Rondo of Blood, which I also have not played. CV3 is a worthy winner.

For years Super Castlevania was my favorite.....I preferred the traditional games. I had Sotn for probably 5 years but had only played about the first 10 mins and just didn't get into it...then one night it happened, I decided I was gonna make myself play it for at least an hour. About 4 hours later and I was hooked. Now it's at the very least tied for first place....lol

I was saying "I swear to god if Simons quest is on this list" and sure enough it was.

I recently beat Castlevania III last summer and hearing the music and seeing some of those later stages just stresses me out lol. I like going back to the first game because I find the challenge just right, IMO Castlevania III is a bit too hard...

SotN is also my 2nd favorite, but it comes in 2nd to Curse of Darkness. Hector was awesome, as was the Devil Forge system.
