I was always told that if wanted big muscles I was gonna eat meat, if i wanted strong bones i was gonna eat dairy, and if i wanted healthy eyes i was gonna eat fish. I also knew that I should watch what I eat so that I don’t gain too much weight. That’s about all I was taught about nutrition. It wasn’t really until late high school that I started to try vegetables that weren’t just green beans and cooked tomatoes. I later experimented with all sorts of diets - keto, high protein, you name it. Anything that would help me become stronger and leaner. I started to take up an interest in nutrition.
Fast forward to 2012. I decided that I was going to fast for 40 days before lent but it’s not the lent that you may be thinking about. As a Greek Orthodox, it is strictly prohibited to eat any animal products or even olive oil and wine in some cases. I had never fasted for the whole 40 days before and was determined to do it this time. I had also just watched a film called Forks Over Knives so the timing was perfect for me to give it a try. All of my family had lamb on Easter Day but I just stayed on lent and ate all the plant based foods. Forks Over Knives had such a huge impact on me that I couldn’t just turn away from all of the science that pointed to preventing and reversing heart disease, diabetes, and some forms of cancer by eating a plant based diet. Around that time, I was losing family members to those disease and I knew that if I did nothing about it, I could easily be following their footsteps.
A little further down my journey, I started to learn about the impact that my dietary choices have on farm animals. I watched a documentary called Earthlings and learned about the importance of adopting pets instead of buying them from pet stores, I learned about how the dairy and egg industry is not considered ethical even though it can be harvested without killing the animal but let me tell you, most dairy and egg farms still send there animals to slaughter. But even if the animals aren’t hurt at all, just the mere fact of taking a baby cow’s milk away from it so that I could consume it kills me. This documentary was one of the most horrifying experiences that I had to sit through. Earthlings is a powerful documentary. Animals have just as much of a desire to love and live as much as we do. My personal philosophy is, if I can’t do the hunting myself, then I probably shouldn’t be eating the animal.
Lastly, I just want to say a word about the impact that animal agriculture has on our environment. Animal agriculture contributes to deforestation it and run off of waste that flows into our rivers. And I realize that the topic of global warming can be very politicized but wether it’s actually true or not, because I’m not a climatologist, but what seems to be the consensus is that animal agriculture, mostly cattle, contributes to global greenhouse gases. But there is no doubt that whatever food that you eat has a certain amount of impact on the environment and felt that switching to a whole food, plant based diet was a positive for the environment. This is why I say that veganism is not a diet, it’s a lifestyle.

My husband & I were coming out of the butchers with our bags of purchases. Behind the shop they had their own tiny slaughterhouse & two pigs were being taken in to be slaughtered. One of the pigs made, & kept, eye contact with me & I turned to my husband, gave him the bags I was carrying & said he would have to eat it all as I was going to be vegetarian from that moment. I went home & cried all over my cat as I love my cat & could not conceive eating him but there was no difference between him & that pig so why would I eat that pig? The next day I wondered why some people become vegan because it seemed too extreme, no animal has to die for milk, eggs, honey right? I scoured you tube & the internet & learned the true horror & cruelty & how we are lied to our whole lives by those who profit from their suffering. Two days after becoming vegetarian I became vegan. I had a lung condition for 15 years that meant I had about 8 lung infections a year, hospitalised with pneumonia for weeks at a time, 3 times in one year. I coughed constantly. I became vegan 5 years ago & my condition vanished overnight & has not returned. Is it possible to be unhealthy on a vegan diet? Of course it is, just as with any way of eating, it is the nutrients contained in the food & not the type of food that matters. There are many vegan athletes & body builders who thrive being vegan. The only vitamin that may be in short supply is B12 but that is true for everyone, not just vegans & is easy to supplement with fortified foods or vitamin tablets. There is so much independent research on the benefits of veganism on health & the destruction of the planet by the animal industry. Vegan versions of all my favourite foods are readily available, toiletries & cleaning products too. When we can so easily eat a healthier diet that is less harmful to animals & the planet why wouldn’t we be vegan?

I agree with you. Looking into the animal's eyes is powerful and if more people did it, less people would eat meat.

I was eating meat and chicken and fish..... and I had a stroke. Very bad stroke. Three months in the hospital. Surgery on my brain. I know why I did that. Because eating meat causes hard arteries. But now I’m vegan, 6 years vegan ✅❤️😬🦷💪, smooth arteries ⭕️. Scientific fact. I don’t stink anymore. Clean and fresh. I don’t use deodorant because I’m clean !!! Eating meat et cetera, has no fibre !! Plants have fibre, lots of fibre. Poop every day, and no stink. Clean ✅💩. Try it for a month. You’ll see. Healthy vegan food, from KZfaq. Low price. And no murder.

What a beautiful story of how you became a vegan! So happy to find people who feel the same about animals as I do. I think you can inspire people to go vegan with this video! 🥰 it’s so important to think about the animals first, so it’s good that you focused on caring about animals in this video, even if it’s also healthy for us to eat plant based, that’s not the main focus even though I do care a lot about health and fitness too. Thanks for your channel! I found you through Micthevegan 😊 btw I’m an animal rights activist from Sweden 😊💚💚💚

Currently, about 2-3 months now, I'm eating mostly animal based. It's both budgetary and dietary for me. Yes, strangely, my diet that is high on protein (not trying to slip into keto, want a good breath on me this time), doesn't cost me even €3/day. I also have only two meals, rather closely space so also getting a bit of intermittent fasting. It's helping me kick my sugar addiction which is pretty strong. I've lost 8 kilos and need to lose 9 more. I'm the anti-cook and I don't believe it's possible to get all our micro-nutrients from mono-crop farming, or keeping animals from dying on farmland and enrich the soil. Having been without gluten for 2-3 months straight, I've established than my exercise induced asthma (going on 17 years) is not gluten related. My heath doesn't feel better. Apart from my back that was pretty lousy, it's about 60% less bad after these months. I don't like the cruelty side of animal products, but can't afford most any new clothes let alone fancy cruelty free stuff. Same for food. I only eat cow dairy and chicken and sometimes eggs (very sometimes did bacon). And I just feel GOOD eating it. Historically, after eating at a Greek restaurant in times that were otherwise low-budget and low-meat, I did feel better. Meat suits me, it just down. When I had a vegetarian or even vegan girlfriend, I would eat that stuff, no problem. Being a great and inspired cook helps. My worry is long term. Who actually manages to stay healthy doing the vegan thing? What did former vegan gurus do wrong to have to give up on it? My frustration is short term. Why is eating vegan (or healthy for that matter) SO HARD? Should we even eat ANY heated products at all? How did (pre)humans eat before we had fire? How did they make it to be world dominators?

I've come across true activist vegan who after a while couldn't do it anymore, had to choose their physical and mental health over the self imposed dietary restriction. What did they do wrong? Might not everyone be physically cut out for it? I've seen some people wither away...
