Context for Kylie's dress: it was a tribute for her friend who designed the dress. He was supposed to attend the gala for the first time, but he passed away before he could, so she wore the last dress he designed in his honor. 🤍

With the dress, setting asside the possible disrespect to the dead, there's the fact that its a museum piece, made from extremely flamablematerial that they don't make anymore, that DID NOT FIT HER so they had to pull and tug, was mishandled by her team, AND didn't fit the theme!

The problem with Kim wearing Marilyn Monroe‘s dress is that Marilyn was always used and sexualised by the industry and she still is, even after soooo many years of her death they cannot let this poor woman rest in peace. They even gave a lock of Marilyn’s hair to Kim, like wtf? This isn’t how you respect someone, whether they are an icon or not.

The theme Gilded Glamor refers to the Gilded Age which is roughly 1870-1900. The controversy about the theme is because the Gilded Age was when the first mega-rich people were made in America, but by abusing their workers. So, with what's going on currently, people felt like glamorizing the Gilded Age was kinda in poor taste. Also Abby Cox, a fashion historian, has a great video explaining the Marilyn Monroe dress controversy and why wearing a historic dress is such a terrible idea and disrespectful to Marilyn Monroe's memory.

The way Anna Wintour refused to let Kim in until Kanye brought her as his plus one because she didn’t recognize reality show stars as actual stars but now lets just about anyone in is a sign of growth. In what direction? Maybe not the best one since now nobody follows the theme and the looks are not even worth looking at. Also, that dress just doesn’t fit Kim. I can’t get over how badly it fits her. She’s a beautiful woman in an ill fitting dress u_u

I said that she used to be more choosy about who she let in, meaning she usually invited people who she thought would do the event justice from a fashion perspective. Kim was never an influencer, she was a pa with a reality show who Anna didn’t recognize as a real celebrity probably because she wasn’t A-list or influential in the way that actors, models, or musicians were which could have been a bad for business at the time. Even now, she’s more business mogul than influencer. And producing something doesn’t really mean you have to participate in it, so Anna can be her usual character and the people she invites to participate can do the participating. Designers not wearing their own designs doesn’t invalidate their work, it just means they made the clothes for someone else, same as Anna hosting events for people who aren’t her. Overall, I still think it’s a sign of growth in a questionable direction for her to be more lax with who she invites because the looks just aren’t giving like they used to, which is antithetical to the point of having the gala.

honestly i feel that emma is starting to transcend “influencer” and make her way into the more traditional celebrity realm. she doesnt even do content creation anymore other than her podcast and she is making substantial moves into the fashion industry and has a super successful coffee company! shes also been seen hanging around many more traditional type celebrities than influencers in recent times. yes she started as an influencer but 10 years from now i see that not even being attached to her identity

The silly paperboy outfit with the plaid coat was referencing a fashion plate from the gilded era. It was pretty wild, but hit the theme perfectly. It’s one of those things though that would not be easily recognized by the masses so I get the reaction. 😂

I genuinely loved Salem arguing that Lily James' dress was somewhat on theme because the shoulder piece looked like armor. People stopped wearing plate metal armor in the 18th century, that would be at least a century off theme😂 Y'all are hilarious, never change.

Fair, but most of these celebs worked their way to get there. Influencers (to an extent) did not do as much (career-wise). Then again, things are changing, and like Penny suggested. Influencers (to an extent) are the new trendsetters.

at first i thought kylie’s dress was a wreck as well but i learned that it was actually a tribute to her friend that recently passed. they were supposed to attend the met together for the first time. and this was the last dress he designed. it doesnt match the theme at all but the tribute obviously means a lot more to her

Loved this! I don't get most of the cultural significance either. I do want to recommend that you check out the video that Abby Cox recently did explaining the controversy around Kim K wearing Marilyn Monroe's dress. The issue isn't so much with honoring Marilyn Monroe's wishes, but rather that the dress was so fragile that it would be impossible not to damage it by wearing it after all this time. The dress is a one of a kind piece of history, and the company that loaned it out to Kim K and her team never should have done so. It goes against best practices for preservation of historical garments and disrespects the purpose of the gala, which is to support the department at the Met that preserves historical garments.

"Pobrecita.. she needs a hip replacement." 💀 Also Kim and Pete were NOT white tie, they were "black tie " which is the less formal of the 2 (the less formal of formal looks?) It's literally the color of the tie and the cut of the clothing, jackets and 3 pieces suits for men. You wear black tie to a fancy cocktail party for a fundraiser or formal dinner party, you wear white tie to meet the Queen of England or attend a royal ball. And I never realised how nasty the carpet was! 😭

*have never even watched Emma's content, neutral feelings towards her* I think of all the popular influences to invite, emma is the most relative as she has been a literal fashion trend setter among young girls, I remember being in high school and witnessing it first hand the chokehold she had over preteen/teen girls and their aesthetic choices. And she has always been fashion motivated and has done a lot of modeling work that shes actually decently good at. Not everyone aspires to be solely an influencer. Alot of people view becoming an influencer as a jumping off point for what they really want to do in the entertainment/art industry. And not to mention emma popularized and propelled a very specific editing/vlog style. I dont think she deserves to be put in the same category and compared to as addison rae and the sort.

Bruh I agree about the wedding stuff. Even though I don’t even have a partner yet (and maybe never will lol), I’ve already planned out my entire wedding and the theme (kawaii pink sparkly Lolita pastels, duh). And I want everyone to show up trying to show me up-I’m talking Coachella attire, Lolita dresses, zombie costumes, onesies, I don’t care. No way am I have a traditional wedding, least of all with a gross buttercream cake or a white dress that costs $7000 for it to look like all other white wedding dresses. No engagement ring (that money’s going towards the dress) and fairy-sparkles makeup. Ahh, not me hyping myself up for something that will likely never happen 😌 Oh well, we can all dream. It’s gonna be a tea party with a chocolate fountain and lots of stuffed animals, basically.

Marilyn Monroe had a “normal” “realistic” body type yk lil tummy rolls type stuff which was pretty iconic to a lot of people and that was one of the things that made her iconic. A lot of girls also looked up to her. Kim k is fake af all over. And isn’t body positive and idk about anyone else but the messages she sends made me super insecure growing up.
