It's funny how everyone keeps talking about how horribly we treated britney spears and other young women of the early 2000s and how wrong it was, but the truth is we really haven't changed at all. We're doing the same thing over again to a whole new set of teen girls. It's crazy how not self aware some people are.

Exactly what I thought!!! All these people who now claimed that all it’s all the magazine’s and media’s fault for turning her breakdown into a media frenzy and destroying her image are completely ignorant to the fact that they were the ones feeding into it in the first place. All the articles clicked on, all the magazines bought, all the talk show hosts who gave the people what they wanted because everyone thought it was funny to put her in the Village Square shackles and throw tomatoes at her face. But now that they’re older and know better they conveniently forgot that they were the ones throwing the tomatoes. That’s why I really can’t stand when certain people get canceled for things that they did in the past. Like some things are unforgivable then, now and forever, like sexual assault and abuse. But when comedians were telling jokes and were at the height of their careers, who were the ones filling up their seats, buying their tickets, and putting their faces on the magazines making them who they were? It was US. We laughed at all those same problematic jokes that we thought m were funny, but for some reason now they’re the only ones who have to take on the brunt of punishment when people think that it’s a problem now. OR they were still a problem back then, but the majority didn’t care about the feelings of the minority. Let’s not all pretend that, as a country, we were all pretty transphobic and we nodded our heads in agreement that it was okay to be transphobic because “why the hell do they matter?” Growth is necessary to survival but you can’t erase your past like it never happened.

Yes. I have been in this bubble of denial thinking that the world has changed, that Gen Z is nicer than past generations, Britney Spears wouldn't be dragged today and made to cry over her clothes, Janet Jackson wouldn't be cancelled and her career destroyed over a man ripping off her bra in a superbowl performance while the man who did the ripping went onto be more famous with no consequences -- but no, it's exactly the same. Exactly. The. Same. And maybe in some ways worse because the volume of people doing it is enormous. Before it was just the media and paparazzi and people buying those types of magazines or blogs like Perez Hilton doing it. Now it seems like the average TikTok user wakes up every day and chooses violence

it's really sad how the majority of people hating on them are toxic teenagers. i doubt it's old men commenting all these, it's pretty obvious that those comments are the typical gen z humor. people hate on each other not even out of jealousy, just to be horrible. and like salem said, they attack people for any little thing about mental health or bullying, yet they are also bullies who laugh at other's mental health. but they're anonymous so it doesn't matter to them. people can make others really depressed and they just treat it like a joke. really makes you hate humans huh 🤦

teen girls have historically been bashed for enjoying... anything (think back to older people at the time hating on The Beatles, who are now far more highly regarded for their musical contributions bc the young people of the time are now old...) or simply existing, so while it's not new, it's never been as amplified as now since people have more access to other peoples' lives than ever before. And to clarify, just because it's not new, Does Not Make It Okay. It's the delightful intersection of deeply ingrained misogyny and contempt for young people, which is a huge systemic issue (requiring difficult, systemic change) Basically, while this won't ever disappear overnight, small changes are the only way we move towards it - like not sending hate to teen girls online, and better yet, *asking yourself why you feel so compelled to hate them in the first place* (hint: we've been taught to our whole lives!)
@DrawciaGleam02

Yeah, though there were some justified instances of calling out teen girls for stanning rock bands. For example, a police officer working at a concert had to get massive dental work because the collective screaming from female fans at the concert LITERALLY DAMAGED HIS TEETH!!! And I don't think teen girls are harassed as much for liking classic media...such as Shakespeare or Disney (Though Disney has received LOTS of backlash in recent years....). I think there's this view that teen girls just latch onto popular stuff without examining whether it's critically good.

Not only that, but there's a misconception that all medical doctors get paid loads. Junior Doctors in the UK start at 27k salary and hover around the 30k mark for about 4-6+ years before they get their specialty qualifications. During that time they're trying to pay off 6yrs of med school debt and are in too deep debt to just "switch jobs and suck it up". These are also the doctors that are most likely working in hospitals as opposed to specialty clinics, and dealing with anything from sudden A&E/ ER surgeries, to putting patients on ventilators, etc. The pressure is immense. No wonder there is a crisis in the UK where they lack people who want to work in medicine. The amount of abuse they get is staggering and not worth the pay (needing to work 12+ years in such high-stress environments only to get paid the same amount as the average senior software programmer..) Who tf wants that?

to add on to the doctor thing, people genuinely do not care that others are dying of covid if it won’t affect them. like they do not care about the consequences of their actions if it won’t affect them. it’s highlighted in how people acted during covid, it’s also highlighted in how people treat celebrities

Recently, me and another female friend suggested to our friend group to get drunk and do a High School Musical marathon, because, well it'd be fun. And all the guys in the group immediately were so irritated by that really simple and light hearted idea and said things like "next you want us to watch twilight?? what comes after, 50 shades??" and I was just. dumbfounded. How do you go from HSM to 50 shades of grey?! Then I realizes; wow, because that's all movies that were mostly enjoyed by girls/women? So that makes them all the same and immediately bad? The deep rooted misoginy really really bothers me.

The misogyny is real and yet no one seems to really point it out. This video essay was amazing and I enjoyed every second (except the stupid ads in between). As far as I know, Charlie and Dixie are famous people from TikTok who were made popular by the TikTok algorithm and the hate comments coming in like birds migrating to the north, south, east and west. The fact that TikTok girls or influencers that are women GET MORE HATE is truly dumbfounding. Yes I understand what they do is cringey and it’s it for everyone, but all you have to do is SCROLL UP. Is that hard? Are you really incapable of just scrolling up since it’s not your cup of tea? I don’t think it is. Yes, males who are influencers also get hate and cringey comments, but let’s be real. Women are the ones who get the most up front, sexualized, sensualidad, body shame, body positivity/body negativity, and troublesome comments. It’s a mix. People who say that someone who is in a state of vulnerability and utter chaos with their emotions is funny, you need Jesus. I’m sorry, but you do. And I apologize if I offend anyone with this comment, but some people just need to back off. Imagine the pressure, the anxiety, the mental pressure, the ptsd, the lack of enthusiasm, the simultaneous worry and regret an influencer/celebrity goes through EVERYDAY. Put yourself in their shoes. If you don’t like what they do, then they are not your influencer, so leave them alone. No matter what a person does, if it’s not your business or cup of tea, just leave. Why are you being so rude and indecent to someone who hasn’t done no wrong to you except making TikToks of what they are passionate about and wanted to explore during quarantine? C’mon guys, you’re better than this. And I’m sorry, but the only reason you’re hating is because you hate the way your life is since you either have a friend or two or you don’t have any friends at all and you beat yourself up for not doing anything about it. Therefore, to it pain and misery manifests into something we call “hate”. If you can’t manage your life, don’t manage others. That’s just stupid. All in all, I do not hate any influencer, nor am I fond of many either. I just felt like this rant needed to be said just in case.

Yes, they are human beings and deserve to be treated with respect and such. Even if you think they didn't work hard for their money, they still deserve to be treated like human beings. This is a very similar situation to Britney Spears’, she got torn apart by the media and press up to a breaking point, where she was cased to depend on a parental figure. Now this makes me wonder, how will the media react to Charli and Dixie’s current situation after they reach their breaking point? Everyone will feel bad for realizing how much of a hypocrite they are.

Exactly. Why even watch someone if you know you don’t like them? And even if you do watch them, why hate? It’s your choice. They’re famous enough at this point for you to recognize them and swipe past if you see their content. And yeah, I know, if you put it on the internet, you’re sure to be scrutinized for it and I myself say that whatever you put on the internet is subject to criticism, but criticism and holding people accountable is *VERY* different from hate, which should be unacceptable. Hate can harm a grown ass adult *badly* and these girls still developing in their minds and Charlie is a teen. That being said, I’m not saying don’t hold them accountable for problematic things because at their age, they’re perfectly capable of understanding why what they’re doing/ saying is wrong but again, plain hate is neither criticism nor is it holding people accountable.

This hate is from the jealousy people feel knowing that they rose to fame in a way that hasn't been done before and is difficult to replicate. Charlie and Dixie are so very naturally beautiful and its easier for haters to put them down rather than to show understanding for their feelings, or compliment them in the slightest about the qualities that they envy the girls for. These rude people want their disrespect and toxicity to become as popular as them.

That being said, they shouldn't receive de4th thre4ts nor should people criticize them by tearing their body images to shreds. They have done their fair share of problematic things in the past, which also, triggers a huge hate wave. They hang out with r4cist people, too. Holding them accountable is NOT hate. Calling them f4t, ugl y, de4th thre4ts, criticizing them for literally breathing, etc. IS hate. The problem is that people don't know the difference between constructive criticism and hate speech. Criticizing a video or content is helping the person do better content and be a better content creator; whereas, hating on the persons' looks, disabilities, etc doesn't help at all. Unfortunately, there have been too many generations who don't understand the difference so it got lost in translation so now everyone is name calling and attacking one another over a comment pointing out the flaws of a video, and instantly getting labeled as a hater or psychotic. There are some content creators' who do deserve to be pulled down from that pedestal due to toxic personality and toxic content which encourages ill behavior and mindset set... i.e.the trend of idolizing serial killers like Ted Bundy or those that embrace despair culture and don't get me started on the entitled mentality of making videos that the world owns you money because you made a f*cking video through solicitating and shaming followers to give you what little wealth they have. It is all stupid. 😑 I hope the online stupid influence world dies off already. It gives false impression that you don't need to contribute to society for it to continue on and progress. Our society functions, because there are people involved in many different fields and work areas... i.e. you being able to go to a store and buy food is more complex than that... there is someone who planted, raised, harvested and prepared said food before it got to the store, and then there are the people who inventory, stock, and managed the food. People are involved in that. If everyone is a stupid infliuencer b*tch than that system of operation will cease to existence. 🙄The whole influencer culture does not contribute anything positive into the progression and advancement of our species. Taking actual literal action does more.

Honestly I thought people were so wrong when people said people hate because of jealousy. I think the reason I thought it was not the case most of the time was because I was never really was jealous of people or I never hated people because of any sort of jealousy. So, when I heard that was the case, I thought it wasn’t true. But on TikTok, I sort of had a ongoing argument you could say, with someone who was being rude to Charli and Dixie because of this clip of them crying and near the end of the conversation I found out that they were jealous of her. That guy literally said he wishes he would rather be in her place because she’s “wasting it” or something. It really opened my eyes because I was like a “Aha! So you are hating on her because you wish you were her!” (in her place). So interesting

I’m glad you said this as, at 26, I find I feel lucky to have been a teen when the public, accessible internet was still fairly new and a Wild West of sorts. My parents were the kind who were paranoid of MySpace and then Facebook, etc, and I spent my internet time so differently than how modern day me does, and some of that is maturation but I think a lot is cultural and goes for people in general. In high school, so many people I knew were suicidal to some degree and if we had had this extra added pressure, I’m not sure many of us would have survived. I certainly wouldn’t have, but I’m also disabled by my mental health. But I think the issue is a blend of humans being human as a species who tends to create things ahead of our own ability to adjust to it. We’re not ready for the internet anymore than we were for rifles back in the days of wars when many still had bayonets. (Okay so I’m not a historian and I don’t know guns so give me a break if I got terms wrong) Also I don’t think our species has had time to adapt to the detachment of the internet between us and other people. Humans can be bad, we’re just people can’t really blame us. But we do need to still work on improving, of course. We’ve made great advancements so far, but we still have more to go and maybe we always will. I love being human in this era but we really are an experience to be honest

Kind of unrelated, but one of my biggest gripes with the whole “you’re famous, you should expect hate” is that some passions just lead to that. If someone is a graphic designer they can be successful without being famous. Same thing with makeup artist. But for people wanting to be singers or youtubers, or something along those lines, a lot of success is measured by how famous you are- even if that’s not really your goal.

I don’t think that anyone deserves this, especially people who seem genuinely nice.

🦆🐣 Thank you addressing this topic! You are beautiful and never forget that! People hate because they hate the person looking back in the mirror at then!! I was taught and taught my children “if you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all!! Spread Kindness! “ I hope you keep doing your videos!

These children see adults dragging mega-rich people online (for good reasons) and think they are doing the same thing by bullying other children that lucked out into fame and some money.

No one is entitled to being liked, but being hated on the internet by millions can completely reinforce self doubt and negative feelings for yourself.

This is my favorite video you’ve done. I feel like I cried something out & healed some kind of trauma. Thanks for sharing your story about you & your sister, that was so real & raw

Salem, you are easily one of my favorite KZfaqrs. Hearing about what you went through and what I’m guessing you’re still working through with your sister was heartbreaking. You are an incredibly special human being, your thoughts are always so well explained and respectful, and I resonate with all of them. With this video, I can see how your explanations come with a tone of empathy, nurturing what has affected us by nurturing others who are in similar situations. These girls don’t deserve what they’re going through and they should never have gotten to the point of breaking down on cam only to be criticized and ridiculed some more, like ??? I hope this video reaches people who have find themselves criticizing people they don’t know on the internet, because it IS a great place where you can meet people and learn about things you may not have known otherwise, just like with your videos! :) Keep up the great work, there are eyes on you too, but they’re watching in awe and with love and support.
