I bought my 1994 Chevy Camaro Z28 from high school back a few years ago, it was utterly destroyed. After turning it around in one day I thought it was ready for it's maiden voyage as a driver. We headed to Cars and Coffee, but it started overheating as we were waiting in line. I got it back home, switched cars, and now we're jumping back in to try to sort out the cooling issue.

Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Goldwing, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make KZfaq videos.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?
Instagram: WatchJRGo
Facebook: WatchJRGo (or JRGo, FB hates my branding)
Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

The segment on checking fuses reminds me of a wiring conundrum in a truck i own where I was diagnosing no switched 12v to the stereo. The fuse tested good, no damage or corrosion whatsoever, visually checked out inside and everything. Plugged it in and pulled it maybe 5 times before putting a different fuse in, and somehow fuse number 1 was malfunctioning leading to no voltage at the stereo. Not relevant but funny anecdote.

I go back and forth with other amatuer mechanics about "all the computerized junk" in newer cars, but I have to say that OBDII was a wonderful change for the better. I have 2 vehicles which are fuel injected but pre-OBDII, a 1992 Ford F150 with a 4.9 straight 6 and a 1994 Corvette. So far haven't had too many problems diagnosing either, though the F150's EGR valve has been a problem area. The Vette also has the LT1 engine, and at least in the Vette it runs hot while sitting in traffic. From online, forums, etc, that is normal for this car. The fan doesn't kick in until the coolant temp gets to about 230 degrees. And on a 100 plus degree day, it only cools it down enough to maintain it a little bit under the red zone until you get moving again.

Went thru same fan issues with my '06 LaCrosse. It threw a check engine light failing N.Y.S. inspection. Dealership diagnosed bad computer. Several replacements with new flashing failed. Just a heads up, on LT1 camaros/trans ans the fans turn on low speed at 226° and on high speed at 235°. If you have freon in the system then turning on the A/C will turn on the fans. These cars like to heat up when sitting. Also the gauge isn’t the most accurate either. My gauge used to show about 15 degrees higher than what the computer showed.

Tough break, but congrats on your troubleshooting skills. Talking about pre-OBD II and fuel injection - I have a 1988 Dodge Aries with throttle body injection. You can pull the 2-digit error codes without a scan tool. You just turn the ignition on-off-on-off-on quickly, and then count the flashes of the Check Engine light.

The factory settings for the fans is like 230f If you retune it’s and put a 160 thermostat in there, I’ll sit it’s 180-190 in traffic in the middle of summer. I tune 94/95 cars. If you need a tune, let me know. I’m located in tulsa. 🤙🏼 Also if you wanna do it yourself all the software is free. EEHACK and TunerPro RT are the programs you’ll need. Along with TunerPro you’ll need the proper adx and bin files. For the cable get an ALDL cable from eBay for a 95 f body. They’re like 50 dollars. If you need help shoot me a message. I’ll walk you through it. 🤙🏼 The EEHACK software will allow fan tests, ac test and a bunch of other stuff. The factory 16188051 computer is actually pretty nice.

Back when I was a Drivability tech for GM. I could pull full engine data from the late 80s to mid 90s obd1 systems with about any quality scan tool at the time. It seems that the scanners that are supposed to be obd1/obd2 compatible aren't, they can only code read obd1 systems. I'm pretty sure the reason why is the manufactures don't want to waste the money to include live data on a old, outdated, obsolete system so they have it do the bare minimum.

This may have already been brought up so forgive me ahead of time. I have owned many Camaro’s all of them, except one were 2nd and 3rd gen. I took a chance on a 97 Z28 a couple years back and it was by far the worst Camaro I have ever owned. I chased an overheating issue for 6 months, fans, fan relays, head gasket check , changed out that dreaded opti-spark , water pump, you name it. It usually only heated up sitting still until it finally just kept getting hotter at all times. I kept saying it was the head gasket, but every time i tested this theory, it wasn’t, until it was. I love A Camaro and generally enjoy the lt1 but god i will never own another 4th gen again after that nightmare.

96 is the year that separates the men from the boys. I prefer obd2 to a certain degree it kept things mechanical (easier to fix). Obd2 and canbus makes it easier to diagnose with a computer but one wire does many functions so electrical issues propagate like waves

One day I’ll find me one of those Camaros. It’s hard to find a V8 manual anymore. Maybe one day. Anyway, was cool meeting ya at Cleetus and Cars! I’m the one that couldn’t believe ya made it lol with the Corvette I asked you about LS swapping. Hope you get the bugs all worked out of that beast!

Idk if anyone has told you yet but you should get a 24x torqhead conversation it changes over to obd2 and switches to a ls computer mainly just plug and play

Unbelievable what they did to that car. Poor thing. You need to make it right. I’d feel horrible. I know it’s “just a car” but if I took care of and loved my car then sold it and found it trashed as you did, Id feel horrible. I know you have plans to upgrade the drive train. Can’t wait to see how it turns out. Next time you sell her, make sure she goes to someone who will love her as you did and still do.

I hope you keep the old LT1 engine. You can easily do a 24x LS Gen 3 computer. Torque Head Company makes a plug and play kit. Gets rid of optispark. Also the after market Gen 2 LT1 is finally coming out this 2021. You can get the old Lt1 aftermarket block and make a engine from 355 cubes all the way to 498 cubic inches. Can you imagine a 427 LT1 with LS Gen 3 computer coil packs etc? Would be killer. Dont throw away that motor it's a piece of history. That's why I kept mine. I've owned plenty of LS cars. But the LT1 383 with a 24x is a killer combo and completely demolished gen 6 camaros.

There is free scanning software out there for lt1s allowing scanning and triggering fans and monitoring. You can check all the pcm sensors. I use it on my 95. Made my own usb cable for $10

You can use the program scan9495 to diagnose Problems and reset DCTs you just need a 12 pin obd1 to usb ALDL cord to hook up between the computer and car. Also there is tuning software call tunerpro that I use to tune my 94 z28 that is exactly the same car a yours but it’s a manual car. Hope this helps

At least yours can be read! I got a 1993 Volvo 240 wagon, it's an injected engine, but it has no OBD at all, 1 or 2. Instead, there's a module in the engine bay with a light and a button, you press the button and it flashes the light, so you need to have a little booklet that you can use to translate the flashing light and what code it gives off, like a fuckin' morse code like the ECU is an u-boat com op from WWII.

There is visibility in and if you short selected pins. Otherwise an old mt2500 brick or an autoxray will work, I still have the xray 240 from my 91 rustolier...cars gone though

How does your car sound when it needs a valve lash? My engine made a tapping sound after I replaced the head gasket, I did a valve lash, had a bunch of other drama, finally got it back together, and it still makes that sound! How can you tell it needs a valve lash and not something else?
@WatchJRGo
@WatchJRGo 4 жыл бұрын
If you measure the lash and it's in spec you're good. Lot's of other things it could be. Sounds like you're on the right track 🍻

@@WatchJRGo I stripped bolt holes, broke one bolt, and stretched another--using a torque wrench--after doing valve lash the first time. I want to be sure that my engine needs a valve lash before I try again. Of course, I put a Helicoil in each bolt hole, and have all-new bolts.
