In this video i'm restoring a broken italian tire inflator with pressure gauge from the 1950s.

I found this tire inflator with pressure gauge, which dessperetly needed a restoration. It was broken. Air was leaking everywhere, the handle wasn't working properly anymore and the pressure gauge didn't work either. This was definitely the most challenging restoration i did so far. I hope you like the result and the video.

A vast majority of youtube "restorations" are barely even repairs, removing rust with a bucket of evapo-rust, cleaning up the the surfaces, slinging some paint at it, and getting things just back to a functional state. This? This is absolutely a restoration. No doubt about it. The fact that you welded up the slot and re-milled it alone puts you in a whole different category to other youtubers, but to then machine new screws instead of just finding some that kind-of fit, buffing every surface and pin, _screenprinting_ the dial, and other completely unnecessary but crucial steps to maximizing the quality of the final product. Very impressive work sir, you've re-set the bar. I'd say even for many of the well established restoration channels.

@@williswhatchutalkinbout4367 The silkscreening is pretty easy, but you have to be equipped to do it properly. I use a similar process in my photography printing, and I have done some silkscreening in the past. I love that he too that high attention to detail on this though!

@mjv He created a new layer and cleaned up the original image using various contrast settings. All the numbers are there except for 4, which he might have been able to piece together with the right brightness / contrast level.

@11:33 you pause the restoration to explain a mismatch of parts. For me that explanation is an example of how you have managed to draw so many millions of viewers. Not only are you a world class master machinist, and a master of many crafts that help you to achieve the restorations you address, you are also a master videographer. You realized that making a video is telling a story. In all of your videos that I have viewed, you lead the viewer seamlessly through all the otherwise complicated steps and procedures with an elegant and charming simplicity. Your simplicity is deceptive though sir, for it is as rock solid and sequentially logical as A is followed by B, and C is followed by D and so on. In this particular video, your drawing of, and colorization of the diagram was, to me, a telling example of your videographic artistry--for the style of the diagram and your use of it has a casual air that gives your videos the engaging quality that draws millions of viewers to your channel. 10:06 Just a tip! If you want to make an accurate scanning, in order to preserve the dimensions more accurately, put the object you are scanning in the middle of the scanner sensor. Most home scanners have a really small sensor in the middle (the long bar is mostly for the LEDs used for illuminating the scan) and use a lens to focus the image there. Most of the distortion occurs in the edges of the scan. Thanks Technology Connections!

Are you sure about that? Most scanners are scanning line by line. They do not have lenses which might introduce spherical. abberation.

@@FreakBasti Yes, they are. And the way they do that is by focusing each line into a 1D sensor in the middle of the scanner that travels down the page. The sensor does not span the whole width, hence why they need lenses (software correction is applied to the sensor data to account for this)

@TheJR1948 he does use the same material for gaskets and seals. You think he knows all this stuff about everything else, but not gaskets and seals. They are cut in a factory by a machine that does the same thing.

WTF..... OK you silk screened the dial....that alone is above and beyond what any of us was expecting. You could have scanned it and printed it out on some thin sheet of plastic or something. But no you silk screened it.....huge kudos for just that process alone.

To be fair, its completely unfair to call My Mechanics a "Restoration" channel. Restoration suggests he brings the object back to a "like new" or at least "operational" status. This man improves these objects, bringing them to a higher standard of quality than they had fresh off the assembly line.

This was absolute pure pleasure. It was like watching an intense drama with deep undertones of meaning & significance. Going in I was like, *"there's no way he can make it look much better than the way it already looks."* *"Maybe just polish it up a little, and change some basic seals."* You went above and beyond and totally blew my expectations away. Your craftsmanship and attention to details inspires hope in others, and that's an Eternal truth that has been around since the formation of the world. I work in IT, and after watching this video it made me want to be better at my job to serve my fellow man. The reduction of suffering is a noble goal for any man. There's deep spiritual meaning (wisdom) in what you do, and that is why it captivates people. They might not be able to articulate it in words, but they know there's true meaning there.

Can you imagine if this was on television. There would be 15 minutes of commercials, some scripted drama between the technician and some apprentice, and maybe 2 minutes of anything resembling useful, thoughtful, well presented content. I can just hear that one sound effect they use for the reveal of the finished product. It’s like a shimmering cymbal or something played backward to great dramatic effect (shudder). I hope this platform is fulfilling, financially worth it, and liberating for you to continue to produce such great bare bones and yet rich videos.

Not only is your restoration work absolutely extraordinary, but the production value of your video presentation is incredible. So many of the restoration videos make you watch the whole process in super high speed - for me this becomes tiresome and in some cases a little irritating. By contrast your stop-action video process is marvelous to watch. Hypnotic and, frankly, addictive. I hope you make many, many more.

I've watched at least a few hundred or more restoration videos from a dozen other channels and no one,(sorry but no offense to Tysy,Handtoolrescue,RandomHands,Good of the land,and others doing really high quality work)and I mean NOBODY,is going to the length and measure,that you're taking with these projects...😎 They do excellent work,and include a lot of the same skills,but man...You are just on another level...👏👏👏 I think the deciding factor,was you hand tooling the 10 screws for the dial face..😮 You just needed one,but then it wouldn't have exactly matched...🙄 So let's mill,cut,polish,9 others one at a time,just so they all match perfectly...😂 I subscribed to you right then...☺ Amazing,jaw dropping work ,each video just continues to impress!!!🖒🖒

That is not a restoration, it's a piece of art. The amount of different techniques skilfully executed on top of the enormous amount of time it must have taken is just bind boggling. That pressure gauge wouldn't have looked half as good when it was new.

I'm going back through the older vids I missed when they were initially posted. I like this one, lots of good ideas for dealing with problems. I'd bet the original window was domed, like an acrylic watch crystal.

I have not one ounce of know how in any cell of my body (I’ve got the tie my shoe thing down) yet, I cannot stop watching these restorations. My wife came in the room, saw me with my headphones on, setting still in silence and assume I was watching (you know the word) and then she slowly looked over my shoulder. I was listening to my “Milles Davis” playlist while totally enjoying this video. LMAO, she now ask that I put it up on our 75” Samsung so she can watch too. And now I’m a critic, I too wish he had polished the springs. 😂😂😂😂😂

Good grief my man. I can’t tell you how your videos make me feel. I’ve restored some old tools and I’m pretty much a perfectionist but, you sir take the cake. Wonderful watching your videos as they give me a sense of calm and a great sense of accomplishment. I have subscribed because your projects are the best. I’ve watched some others and have seen horrible restoration attempts and some better but you’re in a class alone. Thank you for being such a perfectionist and producing such entertaining videos. Keep them coming and I will continue to watch them.

He fixes a lot of casting marks, etc., and I doubt it had a mirror polish ;)

Nope he polishes the parts. They chromed everything when it was new so they wouldn't have to polish.

When you first showed the condition of the tyre inflator I thought there's no way he's able to stretch this out to 23 minutes of video: it didn't look too bad at first glance. But how wrong I was; your attention to detail is second to none, and the finished article is superb. The dial I thought would just be cleaned and polished but no, you had to make a new one from scratch and screen-print the numerals and letters onto it too! I'm seriously impressed with your work and the filming techniques also. Bravo man, Bravo!

When I watch these videos, they mean more to me than just restoring some old machinery, I relate to them as a metaphor for deep identity-level change. You can become anything you want to become in life even if it takes a lot of work. The important thing is to focus on what fixes your problems at their core. This guy understands problem solving and he's an artist. Thank you so much for making these videos man, they're therapeutic and well as entertaining, thoughtful, and insightful.
