I watched several other videos, before stumbling onto this one. The others did not fully explain all the steps, as you did. So, after a frustrating day of not getting it right (other videos were no good), I followed your steps, and got it done, and right, in no time, at all. Thank you!

Never under-estimate the value of a long 14mm ratcheting wrench on this job! You can see the mechanic using one. I did without, but it would be helpful. Excellent video overall! Even gave the bolt thread and length for the Harmonic Balancer puller. Very helpful! Thanks!

Thanks you saved me!!!!! My first timing belt job ever.. Your advice on placing something to hold the the belt in place and starting at the crank going counterclockwise was awesome. I tried from the top and worked my way down and couldn't lose the slack from the belt. But I did it your way and success, and you're the only one who explained the 1 7/8 tightening thoroughly! Thank you tons for this video. The service manual is great, but illustrations only go so far :) One thing I noticed after checking TDC on the lower cover is the crankshaft looks advance 2º. Not sure if Toyota is messing with us with Gen 3s, but both the cam and crank notches inside the belt housing was spot on. Nonetheless, 320k+ '93 is purring again. Thanks again!

can you explain the 7/8 turn at the end before tightening the tensioner?
@pauld7863
@pauld7863 8 жыл бұрын
Toyota specifies a particular position before tightening the tensioner bolt. I assume that the position of the crankshaft and camshaft has some effect on the tension of the belt, even in the static situation. Rotating the crankshaft first before tightening the bolt removes slack and puts tension on one part of the belt. Then the other part of the belt which would have been slack has its tension established by the (not yet bolt-tightened) tensioner pulley. Tightening at a particular part of the engine cycle eliminates variation that would likely occur if the tensioner bolt was tightened at some random point in the engine cycle and without first rotating the crankshaft.
@newauraxx
@newauraxx 5 жыл бұрын
@@pauld7863 So after you do this process it should still be on time? Even the notch isnt back at zero?
@afara2000
@afara2000 5 жыл бұрын
@@newauraxx That's correct. Once you tighten tensioner bearing bolt at 45' angle with 31 ft-lb torque, there should be enough tension on timing belt. You can also test timing again by repeating process i.e., bringing timing marks to TDC by turning crankshaft pulley bolt clockwise slightly to align with 0 on lower timing cover. Then turn crankshaft bolt clockwise two full revolutions and check TDC mark at the camshaft pulley before installing upper timing cover and completing the job.

My engine had too much compression and would slip back (ccw), as I was turning and the belt would jump back a tooth. I took out the spark plugs and finally got it. The pulley spring is new, but the idler doesn't seem to have enough tension on the belt.

Great video! Once the Camshaft is aligned on top. The question I have is how to determine the Crankshaft #1 cylinder TDC is on a compression stroke but not on TDC of an exhaust stroke? How can I tell? Everything is electronics, there is no distributor position that I can check like the old times. The valve cover is not removed to check the valve sequence visually. Use of a compression gauge and turn the Camshaft by hand seen to be too much effort. Would you advise? Thanks

A client called me to check is Toyota Camry 2000 model with a 5sfe engine which always have a broken timing belt about 4 days after replacement. When I examined the car the only thing I saw that seems to be faulty was that the belt was weak, not really tensioned. The engineers have replaced the timing belt adjuster but to no prevail, the belt keeps cutting off. There was no oil on the belt that could be responsible for that. Please help me, what could be causing the belt to cut frequently?

After installing the timing belt and removing slack. Im noticing that the crankshaft pulley timing mark is aligned right. But the camshaft mark IS NOT IN ALIGNMENT. ITS CONSISTENLY FORWARD BY 2 inches or so...again this is when the harmonic balancer is at the zero mark. Is this okay? Im referring to the 'camshaft gear'...the camshaft gear hole is past the camshaft vertical notch/camshaft seal area. ie. on every 2nd complete 360 degree turn of the crankshaft gear...the camshaft hole is at 1 o' clock versus the camshaft vertical mark which is 12 0'clock. I want to know can the car still run okay despite this? I can tell that the camshaft marks are off because I made marks with white out before installing the belt. I have not tried to start the engine yet either. To be honest the car already has 276,000 miles on it. And doesnt have a check engine light or any codes. I decided to replace the belt because It was very loose (yet fully intact. I know how bizarre right?) I bought a kit and changed the water pump, idler pulley, tensioner pulley (I think this was the main culprit, as the spring felt weird and the tensioner pulley had VERY limited movement. Im gearing the bearings inside the tensioner pulley were worn. I checked the records for the previous owner and the timing belt was last replaced at around 185,608 miles, oil pump seals, camshaft seal and crankshaft seals were replaced then too). Yes its toyotas 5sfe engine, If I can get the car to last me another 40,000 miles Ill be more than satfisfied Can I rotate the camshaft gear counter clockwise about 45 degrees before the camshaft gear TDC#1 timing mark....rationale: so it COULD potentially line up correctly after I reinstall the belt and rotate the crankshaft a few times?

I am having one heck of time getting that Y shaped bracket back on. You can't see those holes so you have to line it up by feeling for them. I am going to try jacking up the engine a bit to see if that creates more room for my hands. Any other ideas? The elephant in the room is how to hold the pulley and get 80ft/lb torque. I hope I don't have to remove the starter to block the flywheel.
@PotatoeChipz
@PotatoeChipz 6 жыл бұрын
The bottom left threads on the block are visible for the bracket bolt. Line that up first and hand tighten to catch. The remaining two bolts will fall into place for anyone having trouble in the future. The harmonic balancer is another story without a homemade or SST :-D

Finished the job today and same result. Other people on forums said the same thing so I'm under the impression that this might have been intentional on Toyota's part or something to do with wear and tear on the cover, who knows. Has your engine been running strong with that "2º advance"? Any signs of running lean looking at the spark plugs?

I took my 1999 Camry 2.2 L 4-cylinder to a mechanic to replace the timing belt and he did the timing belt water pump camshaft seal and front crank seal. I picked the car up and there was a whining or howling noise coming from the engine that wasn't there before. I just took a wild guess and Googled "symptoms of an over tightened timing belt". I got several videos including one of them with my exact same engine in my generation Camry making the same exact noise as my car was making. I took the car back to the mechanic and told him about this and he argued with me that he didn't think the noise was caused by an over tightened timing belt. But he took everything apart just to double-check and then returned the car back to me and the noise is only half gone. What do I do at this point? Any recommendations?
