I just got all that done plus a new harmonic balancer which was wobbling. New plugs and wires. Oil pump gasket , new valve cover gasket and transmission serviced. 1995 Camry same engine with 210,800 on it. Still runs great.. Expecting to keep it for another 100,000 miles or more..

Thanks for your video. My wife paid a "reputable" shop 500.00 to replace the timing belt on our 99 Camry around 150,000 miles and the belts snapped at around 200,000 miles. The mechanic who helped me later (At another shop in another state) said it had it's OEM tensioner, so he really doubted that the original mechanic actually did the work. We got a new Camry so I'll be doing the job myself. It's hard to trust the shop if they say they did it when it's buried inside and no way of verifying it was done. But a good thing is that you're only inconvenienced if your belt snaps because your engine won't be damaged. That's really good to know.

Great show, 205,000 miles on these cars are just getting broke in if you keep the oil and filter changed every 3000 to 3500 miles. I had 327,000 miles on my 2000 Camry several years ago when it got hit and totaled it out. It would still be running if it had not been for this. I did 3 timing belt and water pump replacements on it and the last time I change them I changed the crankshaft front seal, camshaft seals, oil pump o-ring and valve cover gasket at about 300,000 miles. This stopped all oil leaks and it was still very reliable, was driving it 120 miles a day to and from work. You covered everything that needed to be covered great job. I had to support the motor from the bottom when I did mine, not sure if I had to but did it anyway.

One technique I used to take that front pulley main bolt (my torque wrench couldn't do it even at 120psi) off was to put a breaker bar against the front or the rear subframe, disconnect all the spark plug and crank the car for 1/2 sec. Took it right off!

Great video RnW, it helped me out a lot I must ask, since my car is a 1997 Toyota Camry I4 2.2L (5S-FE), I started my car up on today (1/3/2017) and it ran fine for a few minutes, then it stayed hovering between 500-750 RPM, then it sputtered and my car shut off. So, now I'm I think it's time to change my timing belt. I need to know, what is the most important parts to replace when replacing the timing belt. I can find a TB replacement, but not all kits come with everything. I don't want to have to buy multiple kits just to get everything.

Great video........but one question....how do you know a seized water pump wasnt the cause of the timing belt breakage? I notice you're only replacing the belt. Im facing this very dilemma right now as my 2000 Camry died while stopped at a stop light and it's most certainly the timing belt that broke. The thing is Ive read quite a bit that when this happens it's usually due to the water pump seizing. Once again....great video
@ClubXrock
@ClubXrock 6 жыл бұрын
If the water pump turns freely without any obvious resistance, then it should be good to re-use. Timing belts usually fail when idling or during switch off or start up due to the jerkiness of the camshafts at low speeds. Water pumps are either turning okay or generally seized. Hope that helps :)

Great Video! I've been watching it repeatedly for the last 2-3 days in preparation to replace the Oil pump gasket, O-ring, camshaft seal, and crankshaft seal on my 98 Camry. I have a question - what is the correct way to remove the 14mm bolt in front of the cam shaft sprocket? If I use a socket and ratchet and rotate it counter clockwise will that cause the engine to rotate counter clockwise? Or will the bolt spin independently? I don't have access to a compressor gun. Can I use the engine bump method with that bolt? Thank you!

An impact wrench will take it right off. You can put two long bolts in the holes of the harmonic balancer and hold with a prybar, while loostening the crankshaft bolt with a breaker bar. I put the crank bolt in without the balancer, and had to use a Lowe's Kobalt slinder pipe wrench on the shaft and use a breaker bar to get the bolt out. Then had to sand the gouges out of the shaft to get the harmonic balancer back on.

Mr. Wrenches have you ever replaced the fuel filter on that vehicle? If so how did you do it? I tried doing mine and when I put a crescent wrench on it I figured out that the inline nut was rounded off. Do you know if I need to make new lines or is there an easier way. Your video on the timing belt was very helpful thank you.
@shakiras3658
@shakiras3658 7 жыл бұрын
The nut on the bottom of the fuel filter can be essentially welded to the filter due to corrosion. Sometimes even a good flare wrench and solvent won't be able to remove it. It's difficult to reach which makes matters worse. Sometimes a length of line near the filter needs to be cut off. A new nut and a new piece of fuel line need to be used with the end flared using a flaring tool that matches the fitting of the filter. On the 3rd generation Camry it's a common inverted flare fitting like what is used on the brake lines. The new section of line is coupled to the existing fuel line using a coupler, preferably one that doesn't require flaring which would be difficult to do in-place on the vehicle.

This is not really a very good video. I just finished my fifth time installing a timing belt on a 2.2L Toyota. Three times to changes seals on a previous car and twice on the current on, first to replace a broken idler bolt and then to replace a broken timing belt. The most challenging part of the job is removing the triangle bracket. The tool I use is a double flex head 1/4-3/8 driver. A normal socket will be too short to provide clearance and a 3/8 deep reach will be too long. You will need either a medium reach socket or a 1/4 drive socket. My advice when you do this job is to change everything. This means, all seals, the tensioner, the idler, the water pump and the belt itself. I developed this rule from experience. The reason why I had to do the job twice on my present vehicle is because I did not follow my own advice. I did change all the seals, and replaced the water pump and the broken idler bolt but not the belt itself because it supposedly had only 30,000 miles on it. Many people dislike timing belts. Timing chains have their disadvantages too. A timing belt systems allows you to change everything on the front of the engine all at once, but if you do not do so, you are setting yourself up for future trouble - maybe just a redo, or maybe a failure and being stranded.
@Shualam
@Shualam 8 жыл бұрын
Do you advice changing the pulleys? A mechanic told me pulleys don't go bad and to just change TB and water pump. Or is this some evil business strategy to spend another $400-600 dollars to change out the pulleys?
@myRatchets
@myRatchets 8 жыл бұрын
+Moon “Moonlight” light Yes always change the idler and the tensioner for the timing belt. They are basically bearings and if they fail the timing belt will snap. The mechanic might have been talking about the camshaft gear or the crankshaft gear or he may not have been a mechanic at all..lol
