Great to see a review from an owner. Really keen on getting a cargo bike and this is at the top of the list I think.

Brilliant, I love the idea of cargo bikes although probably a bit big for our needs. We have been moving towards doing more shopping on e-bikes which allow us to collect all but the bulky / frozen stuff, and gives us the opportunity to travel along NCN1 to Blyth while getting a good breath of sea air on the way.

Another alternative is the Tern HSD. I have one and it’s the S8i. So it has the hub gears and carbon drive belt. I have done nearly 3500mls in 2 years on it and so far it’s been brilliant. But I do quite fancy moving up to the GSD next.

We bought the S8i in August 2020 - an utterly transformative purchase. My only gripe with that bike is that its paint chips *way* too easily. Forget a hard knock - it chips with a hard *look*. I then learned another gripe with the S8i when we bought a GSD S00 last year (gotta keep the belt drive!)... The S8i is too good 🙂! After a year of owning both, I can confidently say that while the GSD is good for sheer grunt and capacity, the S8i is the better bike. It rides better, the stepped hub gear is much easier to use than the CVT gearing on the GSD, the S8i is practically a stealth bike it is so quiet. The GSD cargoline motor does make some noise, and the enviolo hub + sprocket does 'ratchet' when freewheeling. Anyway - both are, ultimately, great bikes, and we put on around 4000km a year between the two of them, and if our car weren't practically worthless, we'd sell it as it's only used for distance runs now. Oh - and your point about insurance: insuring the pair of bikes costs us around £500 a year... compare to my car insurance of £220. It's not perfect, but as we depend on the bikes more, i need to ensure that, in the event of mishap, they can be replaced easily.

@@aw_mckinley thanks for the response. Could not agree more re paint chipping. I only had two gripes with the S8!. The 400w battery is just not enough. Although you could buy another. And the motor whilst very refined is lacking in grunt compared to something like the CX motor. It’s ok but it would be so much better with more torque.

So, I bought a Tern GSD and it is still within it's warranty period. There was a problem with the lights (lights switched off every time I pressed the brakes) and the bike had to be sent back to Tern for repair. 1 month later, the bike is still at Tern. I called the distributor for Tern in Belgium (Hartje) and the guy pretty much asked me why I was calling and what did he expect me to do about my bike being in service. He also said that I shouldn't expect my bike back before some time next year because they are busy and have a lot of bikes to repair. HE WOULD NOT EVEN TELL ME WHEN NEXT YEAR I COULD EXPECT MY BIKE BACK. This is a bike that cost Euro 6500, still in warranty and which we used to use daily fro dropping our kids at school. It should not take 2+ months to repair - especially since apparently what is needed is to replace the internal wiring. I didn't pay this money just to have it sitting in a repair facility in Germany.

did you get it fixed? my guess is that the brake light is shorted somewhere. im looking to buy a tern gsd and have no car but this kinda concerns me if their service is so slow

@@justinb7940 It did - after 3 months, even though under warranty. There was one poor lady who was told she had to wait over three months for a derailleur hanger - these aren't fancy parts with lots of electronics so really don't understand this. They are great bikes but if, like me, you want a car replacement (school drop off takes 5 mins, w car - 20-30 min w traffic, parking...), you should seriously consider alternatives from other companies that have a better handle of spare-parts and service.

@@sanaulsiddiquee6588 thanks for your response. i will take that into consideration for my descision. also, theres a forum over at electric bike reviews and there is a tern category. so next time if you have problems you can post there too. it's a good way to get help and for other people to find soluitions to their problems as well as track issues with bikes. thanks again!

How’s the build quality been long-term? I got an Electra e-bike and I love it, but it doesn’t have nearly the capacity that some beefier bikes do and I’ve hit the max weight getting groceries already. Got a bit squirrelly. Was thinking about grabbing an Orox once I had the cash to do so.

Very first time i have seen regular bike size comparison. Which is important for someone new to long tail cargo bikes. Are 20" wheels good enough for 20km long rides?
