Australian EMD's N464 & S312, the N being a turbocharged V12 645e3c and the S class with a roots blown EMD V16 567 2 stroke diesel downing out the lead unit which has mufflers fitted.
A70 should make some real noise in the next 3-5 months when it's in back in freight traffic.

I remember that sound when I lived near the main Adelaide line in the Wimmera in the 70s . On a clear frosty night I reckon you could hear it for 20 miles ❤❤

Fantastic mate, hopefully soon they will get more of the N classes on hire or purchase them. Also would be great to see A70 when that is back out. It would also be great if SSR got another rake or two on the BG of grain hoppers and so they could extend the current rakes

Loud?? Ha! You should've heard how loud they used to be particularly in the 1970 and well into the 1990s. They were so much louder than now it is utterly ridiculous. B-69 used to run a bit on the Frankston line. I can remember sitting at the McKinnon Rd level crossing for perhaps more than 10 minutes in about 1986 and I could hear it for all that time. Another time I can remember being at Bacchus Marsh station in the early 1980s and you could hear an Adelaide freight train at about Melton weir fully 15 minutes before it got to Bacchus. The 3 locos' dynamic brake fans howling coming down the hill into the station then into it past the level crossing. Then the crackling chant of them crawling up the Ingliston bank on the other side of the valley. The mechanical thrashing sound of EMDs was very noticeable. That thrashing is long gone. The way they've muffled them down is over the years is so severe that people born after about 1990 have never heard how loud EMDs originally were. The deep bass they had at idle and in the lower notches - gone, the mechanical thrashing - gone, the straight through exhaust sound - gone. 567 non turbo were very loud. 645 turbos were very loud. C's in notch 8 would make your brain rattle and your eardrums vibrate - like really; you'd tilt your head like dogs sometimes do when you speak to them while they're looking at you LOL, to ease the thumping in your head as they went past. Here's the thing, the original sound of EMDs was a combination of the mechanical thrashing as well as the ridiculously loud exhaust. None of that anymore.

Being a retired engineer here in America I loved when those Emd's were holding steady amp's in run 8 pulling up the grade on cool nights with the occasional stack fire l do miss the rails there's nothing like the sound of a working prime mover keep up the good work.

N464 and S312 are flying through. N464 and S312 sound quite silent. Can't wait for A70 to return to service with SSR.

It's a demanding track on the locos especially on the up to Melbourne loaded.

Sometimes depends on the crew, the Ns are nice and quiet, the S's not so much
