One of the most dramatic and impactful battles in history. A masterful display of tactical genius by one of history's greatest practioners of war. Ridley Scott decides to replace it all with a fancy version of a bugs bunny vs elmer fudd cartoon.

As a lifelong fan of napoleonic era I would have difficulty guessing what battle this depicts if it wasnt in the title. Not sure why its depictet in dusk, it was fought during clear day ( only way napoleonic battles could be fought ), there was no camouflaged men and guns, units fought in strict formations, orders werent instant, it took 5-15 minutes for couriers to ride couple of miles and find certain commander and so on. All in all this looks like some small scale clash, rather then epic battle fought by 250 thousand men on a several miles wide battlefield. At least uniforms look right for that year, french still wearing tricorns.

Cinematic liberties are fine as it's a cinematic film. The audience won't care if the sky was actually clear or not or if orders weren't instant. Imagine watching a film where we wait 15 mins for the next order of the battle. I mean seriously.

'The sun of Austerlitz.' I see what you're saying but not completely correct. There was morning mist that concealed Napoleon's strength in reserve. Key to taking the heights. Also not sure where you get 250,000 from. More like 150,000 on total that day. But yeah, the sun burnt the fog away by this stage of the battle and the ice lakes is more propaganda than anything Very few actually drowned.

What are they suppose to do? Show a movie with battles depicted accurately?! That movie would be 100’s of hours long. This is a movie trying to compress Napoleon’s life into hours. Even showing him dictating orders to aides-de-camp would be wasting minutes. Honestly, if you don’t get it s stylized and destilled, but ACTUALLY think the director wants us to think Napoleon was shouting orders to units miles away, you’re a bit dim witted…

It would be very interesting to confront Soult with Wellington at the Battle of Toulouse (1814), then the meeting of the two veterans at Queen Victoria's coronation (April 25, 1838). The two men had a secret conversation before the ceremony, and when they emerged were cheered by the crowd all the way to the cathedral.

@@o.k.2968 I may be wrong, but I believe that you are judging the film and it’s accuracies based upon a trailer. There’s no way that you could condense any part of someone’s life, specially someone like Napoleon, down to a couple of hours without taking some artistic license with some of the events. I’m sure there are many historians that would be complaining about details left out, dialog, colors of uniforms, accents and dialects, and the list could go on and on. There’s only so many hours that a film can run, and historical records, although many, can’t document each and every aspect of someone’s career. Artistic license is necessary to liven up an otherwise dull day.

By just this clip alone, I can tell that they are barely even trying to be historically accurate. since this is not how the Battle of Austerlitz was fought, as it was spread over several miles with up to 150,000-160,000 men fighting one another and was far more complex. Now I don't expect historical films to be 100% accurate, but I would like to see a decent attempt by writers and directors to follow historical events they are showing. I mean the film Alexander had it flaws, but it did a good job of representing historical events, for example the battle of gaugamela was done very well. This scene just shows a single field and the Austrian army just charging in without any real plan, and not even preforming any kind of recon on the nearby forest, where half the French army is seemly hiding in

Playing devil's advocate. How does a director show it full scale Napoleonic battle? About the most difficult to do. Alies vacate the heights to attack Napoleon's deliberately weak right flank. Counter the center while holding the left, reserves come up to support right flank. Epic cavalry clashes in the centre. Etc. You'd have to dedicate an entire move to this battle alone. .. and that's my worry. The topic is so huge I'm not sure it could be told reasonably in 10 hours.

Like all previous Ridley Scott historical movies (1942, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven), this one is also totally ahistorical, but visually striking; I'll watch this for the cinematic value alone.

More Hollywood Lovestory than an epic movie. 90 % lovestory between Napoleon and his wife and 10 % historical content. I recommend the Movie Waterloo (1970). If Scott did here the same work than he did with the armor of the knights in TLD this will be utter trash.

So many dont want this film to succeed from reading some of the comments but i am just happy to see some big battles with thousands of soldiers, horses , costumes and and of course Ridley Scott as the director. Might not be the best, might be no fully true but surely compared to what s been coming out lately, i say bring it o n and hope for more big historical movies in the near future....we have so much history .

The famous book "The Grudge of Monte Cristo" also cleverly uses the history of Napoleon. The protagonist Dantès was framed as a member of the Napoleonic party and imprisoned in 1815 (Napoleon was planning a restoration at the time). Later, Napoleon really restored the throne, but failed in only three months, which gave the protagonist no chance to reverse the verdict.

Was Napoleon such a despot he couldn’t be negotiated with ? He introduced centralized government in my country, Delivered a first King, aka as a monarchy instead of an oligarchy, And wrote the Code Civil, a law that’s regulated civilian interaction, With the first rule being, though shall not personally serve another Basically banning slavery, all that from one ‘tiny’ man. Glad there is a movie 😊

What about Le Directoire and National Convention? That was centralized government before Napoleon. But this is an American point of view; Europeans seem to believe that first and foremost a strong executive or monarchy is needed to lead centralized government.

It seems to me this is going to be just like Kingdom of Heaven. Solid 8, even 9(for director's cut) as a film, but as a historical film solid 0(zero). Where are Pratzen heights? Where is weakened right flank and the attack on center (Pratzen heights)? Where is marechal Davout marching to strengthen right flank? Plus this ice battle is just Napoleonic propaganda, later they found a few dead horses and a couple of dead soldiers. And dead soldiers were russian not austrian. Of course I am going to see this film but I reserve my right to bitch about historical inaccuracies. I found fault in all the battles from the trailers (Pyramids, Waterloo, Austerlitz) except Toulon.

So many historical inaccuracies like the Russian vs french cavalry charge at the north of the Austerlitz, The Charge of the British cavalry being late because irl the British use their cavalry during the Battle of Waterloo to smash the French line and the. They get charged by French guard cavalry

I haven´t even seen the movie depiction of the battle, but i know it is wrong. This battle was complicated and I don´t think it can be depicted properly in a hollywood movie. Napoleon hinted strategic weakness in negotiations and even though the "allies" had a small numerical superiority, it was not overwhelmingly so. Lot of the outcome of this battle was set before the cannons fired, so to speak. Part of the russo-austrian force leadership wanted to fall back to the carpathian mountains, but Napoleon´s "trap" was to pretend weakness with offers of retreat and, possibly critically, anbandoning the Pratzen heights. Now even if you are an amateur armchair general, one does not anbandon commanding heights for no reason, so the combined command of the allies after some deliberation choose to do battle instead of falling back. This battle is actually 3 battles: Napoleon kept his northern flank somewhat strong, expecting the strongest attack there, his southern flank somewhat weak, expecting an ordinary strong attack there, with orders from "nearby" forces who had not arrived there yet to reinforce them (a 48hours force march) and keeping his center super strong. With his super strong center he counted on taking the enemy by surprise in the morning. The enemy was keen to attack and surround and destroy Napoleans northern flank, and give diversionary or holding attacks in the other places. They actually considered themselves superiour everywhere, but kept their guards in reserve. There was heavy fighting in the north and especially heavy fighting in the south, where a village changed hands several times during the battle, with the reinforcements from napoleons forces trickling into the battlefield and kicking the allies out again, only to face a new attack etc. The allied center was moving strongly against the north flank, but a perfect combination of allied disorganisation and fog helped napoleons strong center to surprise the allies and to take the pratzen heights. The allied disorganisation (some units that should have moved against napoleons north were still at the center and helped defend the Pratzen heights) along with the russians commiting their elite guards troops kept in reserve actually gave the french some pause, even captured a french battle standard, but Napolean then was free to use his own guards reserve as well, and kept the momentum, capturing the enemy´s center. The allies, with no reserves left, lost their center, and the enemy commanded the heigts in the center. Well these famous fights where french artillery shoots at lakes that allies try to cross frozen ponds. Sure, that happens, but the battle was already over at that point. The allied command of the southern flank realized, that they were cut off from their main body, and soon they would face the french main body holding the Pratzen heights in their north, the frenchies that they couldn´t kick out in several attack waves in the west, and french troops trickling in as reinforcements from vienna from the south, so they decided to run for the hills (I would have, too). And it is a historical fact, that they decided to run across frozen lakes at that point. The "battle" at this point, was already long over.

I'm starting to suspect something will be wrong in this movie. Where is linear tactics? Where is the advance of Napoleon's columns? What does ice have to do with it? And again I see Hollywood bloody mess with a running start, as if there are rugby players instead of real soldiers.
