Narrow Wide Chainring: 1x8 Setup

Do you need narrow wide chainring for 1x setup? Should I keep the front single or double chainrings?
The 1x setup eliminates the front derailleur, shifter, cable and housing.
Today I’m going to convert the double chainrings of my Trek 930 to single narrow wide chainring setup.
What is a narrow wide chainring?
If you don’t want a chain guide, a narrow wide ring is a good alternative for 1x setup. The narrow and wide teeth fit the inner and outer links of the chain, this makes it more secure when you change gears and ride on bumpy roads to avoid the chain to fall off.
Do you need double chainrings?
My only concern is to get the full potential of the 11-46T cassette. The setup of the chainrings is 22-32T, the smaller ring is 22T and the bigger ring is 32T.
Let’s see the differences with these two chainrings on hill climbing.
Gear ratios:
32T chainring and 46T cog: 0.69
22T chainring and 46T cog: 0.48
The differences are minimal, the 22T chainring is too “easy” on flat road and uphill riding, I’ll rather maintain and build my cadence with the bigger 32t chainring,
Since I’ll be only using the 32T chainring, there’s no point to keep the smaller chainring on the cranks.
Current setup:
Truvativ Fires cranks
Race Face 32T Narrow Wide Chainring
ZTTO 8-Speed 11-46T Cassette
Sram MX Comp Bicycle Twist Shifter 8-Speed
Shimano Deore XT Derailleur

I went to a 1x8 setup recently on my 29er Trek Marlin. The cassette is 11-32T and i initially went with a 32T chainring but with the 29" wheels the 32T made the lower gears too difficult on climbs still. Even in the 32t rear with the 32t chainring i wasnt able to complete some moderate climbs. So i went with a 30T (which is the smallest size youll be able to get on a 104mm crankset) and now its absolutly perfect for the low and high gears. My cranks also have the 64mm mounting option like yours do here and i was planning on getting a 22t to put there as well for especially climb heavy rides but now that ive tried the 30t chainring i think that will be more than enought to get me up steep climbs or long climbs. I really was surprised just how much of a difference there was between 32t and 30t. Its only supposed to be about 6% easier but feels like a lot more. So if you find the 32t to be limiting (unlikely with such a large cassette) then certainly give the 30t a try. Ill also say that if youre running 27.5 tires or smaller then the 32t chainring will probably be fine. I think its just those large 29" wheels and the limited 11-32t cassette that made the 30t chainring nessesary. In the future ill likely put on a 10 speed 11-42t, 11-46t or 11-50t cassette and derailleur and switch back to the 32t chainring since ill have more lower gearing options with a larger cassette.

I live in a very hilly area. Have a Merckx vintage steel bike and transformed from 3x to 1x. Front 36t and 11-36 casette. Chainring on the inside. Downtube shifters. Ratio is perfect and a pleasure to drive. I use a shimano narrow-wide ring. But whatever I try, the chain falls off on the biggest ring off the casette. A simple chainguard does the job now. But the whole setup was with the goal to keep things as simple as possible and the use of a chainguard nerves me. Detailled is a 8sp long arm shimano altus

Youve likely tried this or looked into it already but a lot of guys will go down a chain size (or maybe even up) to prevent that from happening. It could be worth giving it a shot. So for example if you have a 10 speed chain you could try an 11 speed chain (which will be more narrow) or a 9 speed chain (which would be wider). One of those options could make just enough difference to keep your chain on in that last gear. It a pretty common thing to try. Maybe go to your local bike shop and ask if they will let you borrow an old 9 speed and 11 speed chain so you can try it out real quick at the shop. And if one works out you could buy a new one while youre there. Just be sure that the chains are really 11 speed and 9 speed not one of those one size fits all type chains thats right in the middle that you see on some cheaper bikes and at walmart etc. Good luck!

Hyy Bro I own a semi fat bike in which I have set 6-speed gears it's been a year now and I go for long rides which makes me difficult bcoz of less gearing ratio so I have decided to change my front chain ring to a Narrow wide chain ring it is possible to do this?? And it will make my peddling smooth?? Plzz reply sir or anyone who knows the answer
