NASCAR's Best Race Happens in a Football Stadium

In 2022, the @NASCAR Cup Series moved its annual preseason exhibition race, the Clash, from Daytona International Speedway to Los Angeles, California. The 2022 Clash became NASCAR’s inaugural race at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum - a venue that’s hosted the Olympics, X Games, Evel Knievel, USC football, and more. NASCAR paved over the playing field to build a temporary racetrack, creating an experience unlike any other. A few years ago, that would be unheard of. Today, it’s normal.
I didn’t go to the inaugural Clash, but I decided in 2023 that I wanted to witness history. The LA Coliseum deal was originally only signed for three years, and 20 years from now, I wanted to say I went. I didn’t realize it would become my favorite race on the NASCAR schedule due to its proximity to the city, nearby activities like museums, and mufflers. I love NASCAR noise as much as the next person, but mufflers allow you to not only hear tire squeals, missed corners, and inputs - they also allow NASCAR to blast music during cautions like a basketball game.
I went back this year, where NASCAR combined the Cup Series with a NASCAR Mexico Series race. Torrential weather forced NASCAR to move the race up an entire day, which is unprecedented, and attendance became FREE for everyone instead of paid.
The schedule cut the weekend short (but extended our extracurricular time in LA), and practice set the field for the Clash - not the originally planned qualifying heats. But NASCAR got the full race in, and the racing was great.

The cost to spend a weekend in LA (at least in this area) is surprisingly affordable. It cost me $660 to fly from Pittsburgh to Raleigh a few years ago and the hotel was more per night too!

Fast cars and football, that’s what America does!! First they played a football game inside a speedway for the Battle at Bristol in 2016 and now they are playing NASCAR inside a football stadium! Such a ridiculously awesome race. Excellent video, thank you for sharing!

‘MURRICA! 🇺🇸 This is awesome!! I remember going to my first and only NASCAR event in 2014 when I lived in Florida. It was the Bud Light shootout at Daytona the weekend before the 500 and it was awesome! We were in the inside of the track and it was such a unique experience. Gave me a new appreciation for the sport.

There was a time that North Wilksboro, Martinsville and Bristol had dirt infields and the transporters where outside of the track like what you see with the LA Clash. The problem with that was, when your out of the race you cannot leave the infield. I am not a fan of this race al all Alanis but I do remember watching the Mickey Thompson and Robby Gordon truck series races drive up under the Coliseum under the archway and fly down into the track . The Detroit Grand Prix when it was an F1 race had "Free Prix Day" which was F1 and SCCA Trans - Am practice and race later that day.

Hard to claim this is NASCARs 'best race' (I get you're saying that as in, in your opinion it is which is fine). It's a prelim exhibition race. Hopefully it being in LA sparked interest in to new fans so they tune in to NASCAR all season. The 'best' race can be claimed by the Daytona 500 next weekend, amongst many other cant miss races (Bristol 1 and 2, Coca Cola 600, Southern 500).

Having a media pass didn’t hurt your experience at all. You had a lot more access to behind the scenes areas than your average fan has. But TV does not do this race at the Colosseum any justice.

The clash is generally disliked among the Nascar fanbase for being too far away from the Daytona speedweek and creating a very tough logistical challenge for teams, officials, and fans in addition to being too small of a track and not having great racing action. The likely decrease in TV ratings (although in no way nascar's fault) likely means that the clash will not return to the Coliseum

Racing in a stadium like this is nothing new. they have been racing at Bowman Gray Stadium since the 50s. Which is also a football stadium. The racing at the LA Memorial Coliseum sucks compared to Bowman Gray Stadium.
