@jamesarnold7253 The problem with this is that it's more the Tories self imploding than anything Labour is actually doing A large part of what kept the Tories in power is that the Murdoch empire favours them over anyone even slightly left of centre, which is why Starmer can't commit to anything other than extremely modest spending increases and a slightly more humane immigration policy.
@Funglutton
@Funglutton 28 күн бұрын
@jamesarnold7253 context and, in the case of Corbyn, interference. There was a huge effort by the media to stifle and undermine a very large grassroots movement in support of Corbyn's Labour. By no means did everyone like JC but had the press and factions within the Labour party itself not done everything within their power to assassinate his character, it would be hard to say he wouldn't have put a dent in the Tories' control.

@CW-bw7pv A lot of people fleeing may have family in the UK, making it for easier to settle. For the same reasons, a lot of asylum seekers settle in France. Due to britains colonial past, english is spoken fluently in many former colonies. Would you rather go to a place where you can communicate freely with people or settle in a country where it is necessary to learn a new language.

Strategically good move for Labour. Most people don't know who she is, nor Dan Poulter, all they see is two Tories defecting to Labour criticising the Tories' record on the NHS and asylum seekers. Money can't buy that sort of publicity. Neither are standing again so Labour doesn't owe them a seat. I wonder who's going to be next week, and what they'll slag Sunak for.

@@nathanaelsmith3553 I’m sure she’s probably been told that. Maybe she believes it too. In all honesty, she’s just being used by Starmer as a bat to beat the Tories with. Far too many on the left are reading too much into this. She won’t be influencing policy, she’ll be out of the Commons and forgotten about in six months, and Dover will be properly red. Meanwhile Sunak’s precious stop the boats crusade has been torpedoed by one of his own and the Tory right are spitting chips over it, which in itself is enough reason to celebrate it.

Haven't read all the comments but it's clear that none of those interviewed have picked up on the fact that she's not standing again she's lost interest in ghe role and that by no longer representing the party in government she will no longer have to face the flak about them. So this is about winding down from a job that was obtained by default after her husband's exit. She could resign of course but would any of us forfeit the salary needlessly when it's only a few months anyway. As a Brit now living in SE Asia I would the prognosis for the UK isn't very promising. Some of those interviewed here didn't even understand the question...
