Once you're done with the series, perhaps, if you'd like, you may want to give Robert Downey Jr's Sherlock movies a try. A bit of a different take, but I think you may find it fascinating and interesting. This series and those movies, while having similarities, have a different tone, and you might enjoy the variety.

something similar to Dragon Ball and Super Saiyan Goku happened in the 90s. Toriyama apparently wanted to end it with the Frieza saga, but since it was a hit and fans started stalking him and the company who published it wanted more he was basically forced to introduce Super Saiyan Level 2 and all the way to now. I guess somewhere along the way he just accepted his fate and his tie to the world of DBZ.

Ricky Gervais once said Martin can exclaim an entire sentence with just a look and that's why in The Office there are so many scenes with Martin just glancing at someone and making faces, I imagine at some point he realised he has a very expressive face. They even take advantage of his many scowls in the Marvel movies.

Peter Jackson alluded to Martin Freeman's talent in "The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies". At the end when the fighting is over, there is a scene where Gandalf sits next to Bilbo to smoke his pipe and Bilbo essentially says "I'm done adventuring. I want to go home now". According to Jackson, they filmed the scene over two dozen times with Freeman making nearly two dozen variations of that line...then Freeman requested that they do the scene without a single word spoken between him and Sir Ian McKellan. Guess which take ended up in the final film?

Martin did mime lessons as a young actor. He’s unimaginably good! He also had to say no to The Hobbit because of Sherlock. Peter Jackson watched Sherlock, and changed his filming schedule - so Martin could film both.

I have mixed feelings. If you've read the original short stories. The only character that beats Sherlock was Irene Adler. But in the show they emasculate her and make her look dumb losing to him. In addition they hint or reveal she is a lesbian but they can't have her resist his charm and she switches teams just for him. Don't like the writing, respect the source material or if you want to be modern how about allow an attractive lesbian be who she is without needing to be changed.
@revolutionairre

@@petercofrancesco9812Your last sentence betrays whatever principle the rest of your comment seemed to convey. You don't like that she's, in your view, portrayed as less competent or formidable in the show as compared to the source material, but you're fine with them insinuating that she's a lesbian-also against the source material. Then, you take umbrage with the fact that they didn't treat her non-canonical sexuality in a way that suits your non-canonical preference. Mixed feelings indeed.
@SchulzEricT
@SchulzEricT 7 ай бұрын
@@revolutionairre Implying she's a lesbian makes her *different*, not *weaker*. Having her LOSE to Sherlock when she's the only character that canonically wins makes her *weaker*. You see the difference? You see why one change isn't necessarily for the worse, while the other one is objectively bad? I like how she confounds him by being naked, I like how it's not explicitly stated why - you can think it's because she's a beautiful woman, or because it's simply less clues for Sherlock, or because it's simply unusual, or some combination thereof.

She actually became one of my faves, not just in the show, but a favorite character just in general. I believe she was actually written in just to be a one off character, mostly as a way to introduce Sherlock, but the show runner's loved Brealey so much that they continued to write her in. The House/Holmes thing goes even deeper. At one point Arthur Conan Doyle was a medical doctor. His mentor Joseph Bell had an extraordinary ability to tell things about his patient's lives and health by noticing little details. An ability that very much impressed Sir Arthur and was incorperated into the character of Sherlock Holmes. With House, the inspiration has come full circle.

this is easily my favorite season out of the entire show. each episode is bang on. fun fact: Arthur Conan Doyle (the author of the original books) did eventually get fed up with pumping out new sherlock stories. He felt it limited him as an author and so he tried to move on. The Final Problem was the last story he wrote, in which Sherlock and Moriarty jumped off a cliff to their deaths together… but by then the Sherlock fandom circa ~1890s was so strong that they quite literally did not accept that ending. They were hysterical and protested, wrote letters and cancelled their subscriptions and basically forced ACD to bring Sherlock back to life and keep writing stories. It was bonkers. Nowadays it’s so stereotypical to do the main character death fake-out, but in this case, the episode is truly just an iconic reference to a well loved character.

BBC One premiered a seven-minute Sherlock mini-episode over the 2013 Christmas period entitled "Many Happy Returns". The episode is available via BBC iPlayer, BBC Red Button service, and BBC's KZfaq channel,[80] and acts as a prequel to the third series. The synopsis for the episode reads "Sherlock has been gone for two years. But someone isn't quite convinced that he's dead."[81] The 'someone' turns out to be Anderson, the forensics technician from series one and two, who has lost his job due to his obsessive conviction that Sherlock still lives. He had a long-standing mistrust of Sherlock, yet is one of the few people who believes Sherlock is alive, and is seen throughout the episode trying to convince Lestrade. Anderson tracks him via various mysterious events, from Tibet to New Delhi to Germany, in which Sherlock seems to be involved and points out that the incidents are getting progressively closer to London.

I have watched this show like 6 times AT LEAST and yet i still cry like a baby every time i see these last 10/15 minutes of Sherlock because Martin Freeman is just SUCH a great actor and i feel his emotions through this entire episode. Super excited to watch you continue the series!

The 2 year wait we had to endure for series 3 was cruel. Mind you, I was lucky enough to see the filming of that finale fall, which was fun and I also saw filming for the next season opener (no spoilers). Love this ep, although think 2.01 is my favourite. As for Moriarty, Andrew Scott is a phenomenal actor. He has such a range, whether villain, creepy, vulnerable, sexy, funny, he can do it all, especially on stage. Look out for his new film coming soon called All Of Us Strangers.

Natalie, I'm so happy for you that you're experiencing this marvelous show, Sherlock, which is easily one of my favorite ever shows. You gave a very insightful analysis of Andrew Scott's portrayal of Moriarty. Your observation that he usually looks dead eyed, but becomes delighted whenever Sherlock surprises him, is a key part of his funny, edgy and scary performance. Don't worry, Moriarty isn't through with tormenting Sherlock yet. In season 3, you'll find that the stakes get bigger and so do the laughs... and the twists.

I love this season a lot. I struggle to decide whether I prefer S1 or S2. To me, both have 3 incredibly strong episoides but the 2nd episode of each is a little bit weaker than the others. Can you imagine waiting for YEARS to have a resolution to the ending of the last episode of this season. The breaks between seasons for this show felt so insanely long but with the quality of them and their length essentially being 3 movies per season, it's understandable.

Fun fact; Lara Pulver was actually naked in that scene. They told her that just filming skin-to-the-wind would get things done much quicker and she just went for it.

So Sherlock was my first introduction to Andrew Scott way back in the day, and while obviously everyone in this amazing, he has become one of my absolute favorite performers of all time. He's grounded in this sort of manic mundanity and yet every performance his wholly unique, it's absolutely enthralling. His version of Hamlet is easily my favorite (Which is fitting because Cumberbatch's is probably my 2nd fave), absolutely worth a watch, cause while I appreciate the classic Shakespearean Drama™ of most performances, his is so... natural? His To Be or Not Be is one of the only versions I've seen that actually feels like a broken man grappling with suicidal thoughts and having that argument with himself by addressing the audience directly, the language is all the same but it feels so simply relatable and hits all the harder for it. Highly recommend watching at least that, it really impacted how I thought about Shakespeare. (Also his like, 4 minutes in 1917 is an absolute powerhouse of presence). Also, re: the glass, the gum and the diamond. The case was made of tempered glass (Same as car windows) which is very very hard to break normally, but if you strike it with a very small, sharp point it will completely shatter with a little force. So Moriarty used the gum to hold the point of the diamond against the glass and then hit it with the fire extinguisher, basically creating a really really *E*X*T*R*A* version of those little hammers you can buy in case you end up in a sinking car to break the windows. (This knowledge brought to you by Mythbusters :P )

It's REALLY neat watching Natalie learn about these awesome characters and relationships from the Holmes universe and the way they're BRILLIANTLY put together in this show. Moffat really is incredible. Imagine having to wait 2 years and not even knowing for sure if there was going to be a season 3...

Moriarty with the diamond + gum, I think the idea is that the case is tempered glass, so very hard to break with a blunt object... but if you hit it with a sharp object you can break it. So he does it with style, sticking a pointy object (the diamond) to the glass and then hitting it with the fire extinguisher.

Every sherlock series is so intricate and crafted with so many different story lines ( no matter how minor) become significant. This is a very cerebral series, and there are turns within turns. The casting is brilliant, and the roles are perfect. So many times you deduce the plot, ant then they twist the universe and your concepts are wrong, but right. Enjoy!!!

I've loved your reaction to this series, Natalie. It's well written and acted, let alone the direction and shot choices. When this was released there was a two year wait to see the outcome of things, I was a Sherlock Holmes fan from the books and other adaptations so, I knew what to expect to some degree, but they did such a great job in bringing the characters up to date for a modern audience.

The original “Hound Of The Baskervilles” Sherlock Holmes story is especially famous, beloved, and spooky. It was one of the four individually published Holmes books, the other 56 are short stories that were published in The Strand magazine. It’s great that this TV version of Baskervilles, while completely rewritten in plot, kept the high anxiety Horror aspect of the original.

One major change from canon is that in the story which was the basis for the "Reichenbach" episode, Sherlock didn't come back at the end. That was because Doyle really intended it to be the last Sherlock Holmes story; he was tired of writing homes stories so he deliberately killed him off. Popular outcry was so great that he brought him back in the next story, but at the time it was written ? Holmes was definitely dead.
