Today I'm reviewing Old Fashioned Candy Recipes. Looking for some leftover potato ideas? I'm whipping up some delicious Old Amish Potato Candy as well!
I'm cooking through history and you're invited! Follow along with me as I prepare a recipe from one of my many vintage cookbooks. Will the results be delicious, or disastrous? There's only one way to find out. Thanks for checking out my midcentury cooking video and joining me in my vintage cooking corner.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Old Amish Potato Candy
1/2c mashed potatoes
2T butter, softened
1/2t vanilla
4.5c confectioners' sugar
2.5c flaked coconut
3/4c whole pecans
In a large mixing bowl, combine potatoes, butter, cocoa, and vanilla. Gradually blend in sugar, then coconut. Knead until completely mixed. Shape into one-inch balls and press a pecan into center of each. Wrap in foil and store in an airtight container.

Your shoplifting story reminded me of a time when we were young kids and went shopping in a department store with our parents. As my parents walked back to the car I noticed that my baby brother in the stroller had somehow seized a can of expensive caramel corn. I said ' Oh look! Anthony stole some Crunch N Munch!'. We all looked at the toddler and simultaneously yelled 'RUN!' We weren't the type to steal but knew that was some really good caramel corn!

Remember having this candy but it was white in the center and then rolled in cocoa powder so that they look like mini potatoes

Awesome! I remember making these in school when I was in 3rd or 4th grade. Many years later when I was in culinary school, we made chocolate dessert gnocchi and it gave me those grade school vibes. No one understood why I stood there smiling while I was making mine 😂

Yessss I am a potato chip fan. I’ve found I gravitate toward regional chip brands (current favs are Ballreich’s and Jones) depending on where I live. What are your favorites?

Those look delish. I've seen potato candy that have similar ingredients but the cocoa powder is not in mix, the candy is rolled in it to look like a potato. The stolen cookbook story is too funny! I went to a local Greek fest in a church. There were little booklets on a rack and I took one. Got home and realized they were a $1.00. To my horror, I had stolen from a church! I sent them a $5.00 check and explained.

My mother made potato candy, but it didn't have cocoa in it. Instead, they were dipped in chocolate and tasted like a Mounds candy bar.

Potato is like the opposite of our Ollie!! It's good to see your youthful indiscretion led to such delightful future opportunity. That's past you taking care of future you! I'm not sure if I'm going to give a potato candy a try, but truthfully, loved watching you do it!

I'd wondered if anyone was going to be doing potato candy. Those look really good. I bet they'd be good rolled in pecan pieces instead of having one large one on top.
@cooking_the_books

I like your idea with the pecans! I think if they were crushed up into small pieces it would work really well. They were pretty darned tasty for as easy as they were to make.
