A lovely, natural and casual conversation between two adorable and charming people and your exegesis of it Anna, and if that's not too overkill a word ;-), is absolutely perfect. Nick seems like a very nice guy and was great. Super! Many thanks to the both of you! Bisous 🙏😊😘🌹❤

Regarding your introduction Anna, this is exactly what I was lately explaining on Katherine's last lesson to a dude who was complaining to not understand a single thing when listening to natives 'in the street'. You may have quite a good level in English and have no particular problem to get educated people speaking a clear and formal (R.P.) English, the one learnt at school and even at university. The one Anna, Sabrah, Luke or Katherine speak in lessons. This sometimes can become a whole different story and a challenge when you listen to people speaking the everyday language in the street, cafés, films or series ... For several reasons: because natives, like with people in every other country (think of your own one I told him...) will naturally tend to speak fast, with connected speech, 'eating words', making contractions and elisions, using idioms, slang, committing grammar mistakes, not pronouncing, articulating well etc. etc. And then you have the different accents (In England, it changes from an area to the other and even, you simply move hardly 20 kms and the accent is different! And you just can't get a thing anymore). Of course, and in addition, you also have the cases and the many situations where people allude and refer to some particular things belonging to their own and sometimes special culture and that you may not be aware of... And you're 'lost' ... All this makes it tricky to understand them. This is totally normal. How to remedy to this? ... Well, there is no witchcraft nor sorcery, you have to get your ears used to it the most possible by listening to as much media sources as possible, listening, listening again and practising even slowing the speed of the speech in the settings and then listening again at normal speed ...and yet, you will still find it sometimes difficult. The graal, obviously, would be a total immersion in the foreign language you learn, meaning listening to it and practising it each passing day just like I personally did for 3 years when I realised my originally pretty good but yet too formal and 'schoolish' English was insufficent for me to fully grab what was being told on the radio, in debates or in films for example. I totally immersed myself into the language never more watching a single thing in my native tongue anymore... It was long and required much learning but in the end, it pays off! Now, the real ideal would even be to move to that country and speak the targeted language on a daily basis with the natives themselves and for months and maybe years in the hope of becoming... totally fluent one day. I think of the adorable, much-loved and now late 😥Jane Birkin for example, the 'most French of the English' we loved so much and who spent something like 40 or even 50 years in France... She was indeed speaking a very good French but still had her British accent and was still committing tiny mistakes from time to time especially on the names/adjectives genres and which made all her charm ! Now, I'm going to watch the podcast, thank you Anna! Bisous 😘🌹❤

Of course, I watch your lessons and find a lot of useful things for myself, but I have, in my opinion, one natural question: isn’t it easier to learn to speak competently and correctly yourself than to teach others to correctly understand ugly speech?
