Swimming, flying, saving lives-the job of an AWS is that of a superhero. Naval Aircrewmen are the versatile operators behind the cockpit of a helicopter. They are the lookouts, the weapons, the swimmers and the rescuers. One day they could be leaping from an MH-60 Sierra, into the ocean to save a life, the next they’re shooting down enemy craft or evacuating the injured. Learn more about what it takes to be the eyes and ears behind the pilot at bit.ly/2m05zDh.

As an old Huey chief from the 101st Airborne in Vietnam, I know first-hand the bond between the helicopter pilots and the crew people in the back. It's a real brotherhood and I cannot count the times that our fantastic pilots counted upon us to get into and out of incredibly tight spots with people who needed extraction ASAP. There will never, in what's left of my lifetime, be anything as satisfying as those days and those people

Most rewarding job I ever had was a Helicopter Crew chief on H46’s. 4 deployments, 2 during Desert Storm.One day you’re delivering food , cargo and bombs to the fleet the next you’re training with the SEAL team doing insertions and extractions. All while standing 24/7 SAR duty. Was blessed to be in a great squadron HC-5 which launched more SAR missions than any other Navy or Marine Corp squadron during that time. Miss the flying, traveling the world and the camaraderie amongst friends I made along the way and sadly some we lost also. Thanks to the current Crewman who have carried the torch. God bless and Godspeed.

Talked to a LTJG recruiter on this rate/MOS as it peaked my interest. The info i received was after OCS you are put into a pool of other pilots through a training pipeline where they evaluate your physical capabilities, knowledge, and so forth. THEY ultimately decide where to put you. So whereas this rate exists, I dont think it’s as easy as putting in a package for it and getting it. You are there for the NAVY’S NEEDS.

Trillmatic Gaming I mean you’ll be a door gunner in both, you have to get qualified for it as a dry crewman on helos and as a wet Crewman. In the end you won’t really be doing much of it. You have to get qualified every quarter I think and shoot a total of 400 rounds so pretty much you’ll shoot just to keep the qualification. The wet side is gonna be rescue swimmer though if you’re trying to swim

Shiraz Isakh you have to have an “AIRR” contract. If you do, you can go AWR/AWS. Otherwise, with a dry contract this job is out of the question. Options would be: AWO / AWV / AWF
@meghancooke9739

So for this, and AWR, you PST before you go to bootcamp. After you pass that, you go to boot in an 800 division, complete the extra training there, and get sent to NACCS as a wet aircrewman. After competing NACCS, and RSS, you get to choose (or get designated if there aren't enough slots to choose) AWS or AWR. The difference in dry is not PSTing prior to bootcamp, you're in a nornal bootcamp division, and you don't complete RSS. After NACCS is when you get to pick between AWO, AWF, AWV, and a dry AWS (I'm not sure how often they give those out anymore though). First picks were designated by the least amount of counseling chits, at least when I went thru. After say all the dry AWS, AWF, and AWVs are taken, pretty much everyone else goes AWO (the best in my very biased opinion). Then after you have your rate, you proceed to go to A School, SERE, FRS, and to your squadron. Hope this helped!
